ABSTRACT In this thesis I discuss Ali Smith’s reworking of Ovid’s tale of the girl-boy Iphis from his Metamorphoses (9.666-797) in her 2006 novel Girl meets boy. I examine how Smith has brought Ovid to life for twenty-first century readers, first through an exploration of feminist and queer critical readings of Ovid and the influence of those theories on Smith’s method of classical reception, and secondly through an analysis of intertextual references. My matrix of interpretation draws upon the theories and experimental writing of Julia Kristeva, Monique Wittig and Judith Butler, alongside an examination of intertextual allusions to Ovid himself, Virginia Woolf, John Lyly and William Shakespeare. -

She noted that the software ‘is not an Ovidian god … [although it ofers] the kind of pleasure that a writer like Ovid would surely have understood’; and on the conversion of Salman Rushdie to Salmon Residue by her computer’s spellcheck function, she joked that both Ovid and twenty-frst century electronic word processing programs remind us that ‘lan- guage can change us … even into another species’.1 Despite the extent and depth of Smith’s engagement with Ovid, few critics have pursued the link between the two writers, and fewer still have considered how Ovid crucially informs her oeuvre.2 The central focus of this essay is the many and varied efects of Ovid’s presence in three novels: Like (1997), Girl Meets Boy (2007) and How To Be Both (2014). Abstract This thesis draws on the work of philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy to propose ‘community’ as a conceptual and hermeneutical figure that opens up productive possibilities in the study of contemporary British literature. Community is advanced as a form of political ontology, which moves beyond contingent appearance toward radical possibilities for transformation in the current political landscape. Particular attention is paid to the way in which community is ‘put to work’ as part of the operation of the capitalist state, where community emerges as a central site of political contestation. Community is demonstrated as offering ways of rethinking the figure of ‘politics’ itself, opening avenues for developing its meaning through emergent theories of ‘gender’, the ‘queer’ and ‘trans’. -

Smith was born in Inverness in 1962, the fifth of five children. After school, Smith went to university at Aberdeen, then to Cambridge to study for a PhD, which she has never finished. After she gave up her job as a lecturer at University of Strathclyde, she began writing short stories and novels. Smith, openly gay, currently lives in Cambridge and avoids publicity. She says that she has always believed that an author must remain as anonymous as possible or risk impeding the fiction for her readers. Resumen Este trabajo de fin de máster analiza la novela Girl meets boy, de Ali Smith, que no ha sido publicada en castellano, y ofrece una propuesta de traducción justificada. En particular, el análisis se centra en tres aspectos clave de la obra —la fluidez de género, el agua como metáfora continuada y la intertextualidad— además de estudiar brevemente las características estilísticas más destacadas de la autora a partir de tres fragmentos representativos de la obra. Dos de ellos están narrados por la protagonista, Anthea, y uno está narrado por su hermana, Imogen, puesto que presentan estilos de narración bastante diferentes que cabe tener en cuenta para la traducción. Todas las traducciones van acompañadas de un comentario en que se analiza cómo se han resuelto las diferentes dificultades y se justifica el enfoque que se ha tomado. In particular, the analysis focuses on three key aspects of the work — genre fluidity, water as an ongoing metaphor and intertextuality — and also briefly studies the author’s most significant stylistic characteristics based on three particularly representative fragments of the novel.
