THE CLASS OF 2008

PROFILE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR

The Office of the Registrar reports the following demographic information regarding the Class of 2008. It is included to provide a useful background for other data contained in this report.

Between December 2007 and August 2008, 1,591 degrees and certificates were awarded to 1,557 individuals.

Baccalaureate degrees were awarded to 1203 graduates. A total of 1224 baccalaureate degrees were awarded as follows: 878 Bachelor of Science; 142 Bachelor of Arts; 49 Bachelor of Social Work; 134 Bachelor of Science in Nursing; 9 Bachelor of General Studies; and 12 Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

Among the graduates, 94.3 percent identified themselves as of white, non-Hispanic ethnic origin; 5.3 percent of the graduates classified themselves as minorities; and .4 percent did not specify.

Among the graduates, 68 percent were female, down from 70 percent in 2007.

48 percent of the graduates were from Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh, or Warrick counties, while 16 percent of degree recipients were from other area counties. Graduates from all other counties in Indiana represented 21 percent of the graduating class; 14 percent of the degree recipients were from other states; and 1 percent were from other countries.

Baccalaureate degrees were awarded by the College of Liberal Arts (28 percent); College of Business (23 percent); Bower-Suhrheinrich College of Education and Human Services (17 percent); College of Nursing and Health Professions (24 percent); Pott College of Science and Engineering (7 percent); and Extended Services (1 percent).

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY / FOLLOW-UP SURVEY

This report is a six-month follow-up of the 2007-2008 graduating class; responses were received from 42.3 percent of the graduates. EMPLOYMENT RATES 81.8 percent of respondents are employed; 83.1 percent of employed respondents are full-time, 16.9 percent of employed respondents are part-time. 19.8 percent of employed respondents are still seeking; 50.9 of those still seeking are full-time, 49.1 of those still seeking are part-time.

18.2 percent of respondents are unemployed; 34.7 percent of unemployed respondents are actively seeking employment, 65.3 percent of unemployed respondents are either enrolled in additional academic coursework or have chosen not to seek employment at this time.

15.9 percent of the respondents receiving bachelor’s degrees are enrolled in graduate or professional school. This number includes students that may be or may not be employed while pursuing graduate school coursework.

Of the graduates who are employed, 58.2 percent have secured new positions with a new employer, 12.2 percent have secured new positions with the same employer and 29.6 percent are employed in the same position they held prior to graduation.

Among bachelor degree recipients who are employed, 90.6 percent are working "in their field or in 3 a field in which they expressed satisfaction", a slight increase from 89.4 percent in 2007. (Education majors employed as substitute teachers are coded as working "in their field".) Among ALL graduates employed, 91.3 percent are working in their field of study (2007 figure = 89.7 percent). Overall, these numbers have not changed significantly in the past two years.

Among all bachelor degree recipients, the number of underemployed (i.e. working in a field unrelated to their career goals) is 6.2 percent. Among bachelor degree recipients who are employed, the total number of underemployed bachelor graduates is 9.4 percent.

There were only 34 unemployed bachelor graduates not enrolled in additional coursework or attending graduate school that were actively seeking employment (5.1 percent of the total respondents).

CONTINUED EDUCATION

Among bachelor degree recipients who completed the questionnaire, 20.1 percent were attending graduate school within a year of graduation, up 1.5 percent from 2007 (18.6 percent).

Among associate degree recipients, 36.2 percent are currently completing requirements for a baccalaureate degree, up 8.8 percent from 2007 (27.4 percent).

Among bachelor degree recipients, 3.7 percent are enrolled in additional undergraduate coursework. This rose 1 percent from 2007.

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION

Among all employed graduates, 70.5 percent accepted employment within the tri-state (a 60-mile radius of the University), a slight decrease of .6 percent from 2007 (71.1 percent). Thirty-six of these individuals reside in Kentucky or Illinois.

. 22.2 percent of the employed bachelor degree recipients left the tri- state area in 2008, a 6 percent decrease from 2007 (28.2 percent).

. 34.1 percent of the employed master degree recipients left the tri- state area in 2008, a slight increase of .2 percent from 2007 (33.9 percent).

. 34.0 percent of the employed associate degree recipients left the tri-state in 2008, a 13.8 percent increase from 2007 (20.2 percent).

Among all 2008 graduates, 13.5 percent left the tri-state to accept employment elsewhere in Indiana (16.8 percent in 2007), bringing the total number of 2008 graduates who work and utilize services in Indiana to 84.0 percent. If the 36 Illinois and Kentucky residents are subtracted from the tri-state figure, the state retention rate for 2008 employed USI graduates was 80.1 percent, the same percent as 2007. The average starting salary for baccalaureate degree graduates securing NEW, FULL-TIME POSITIONS was $36,598, an 11.2 percent increase over the average starting salary of $32,907 in 2007.

The average starting salary for associate degree graduates securing NEW, FULL-TIME POSITIONS was $38,276, a decrease of 8.2 percent from the average starting salary of $41,693 in 2007. 4
