C.R. Kernels topple Wisconsin, 3-1, to win Midwest League playoff series Jeff Johnson – The Gazette – 9/8/16

CEDAR RAPIDS — It was gratifying enough to win their first Midwest League playoff series in sweep style. But the way the Cedar Rapids Kernels were able to overcome a couple of “ringers” to do it had to feel even better.

A 3-1 win in Game 2 Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium closed out the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in convincing fashion. It’s on to the Western Division finals for a third consecutive year for the Kernels.

Clinton is the opponent, with another best-of-three series beginning Saturday afternoon at 4:05 at The Popper. Games 2 and 3, if needed, shift to Clinton.

The Kernels were able to overcome a pair of hits and an RBI from Wisconsin center fielder Corey Ray, the parent Milwaukee Brewers top draft pick in June. They also beat Timber Rattlers Marcos Diplan.

Ray joined Wisconsin from high-Class A for the final three games of the regular season and the playoffs. Diplan also spent the last half of the season in high-A but got sent back to the Midwest League for Thursday night’s start.

“I don’t know how it worked out, how for whatever reason they ended up here,” said Kernels Manager Jake Mauer. “Our guys didn’t miss a beat. They’re pretty competitive.”

“I don’t think we were even thinking about who was pitching, where he came from and stuff,” said Kernels first baseman . “We just wanted to take care of this series as fast as possible. Obviously that’s always what you want to do. We got off to a good start last night. Tonight wasn’t the same type of game, but we played well, Eddie threw a great game, we put enough runs up and held them down.”

Eddie is Eduardo Del Rosario, who simply outpitched Diplan. The skinny right-hander from the Dominican Republic went six innings, giving up five hits and a run, continuing a terrific stretch of baseball the final two months of the regular season.

With a three-pitch mix that includes a low to mid-90s fastball, Del Rosario went a combined 6-0 with an earned run average in the low 2s in July and August.

“Your first starts are always tough, getting used to another league and everything,” said Del Rosario, through teammate and translator Nelson Molina. “But I worked a lot, a lot better, a lot more on my pitches in the bullpen between starts. I think that has been the key. Keep working harder, and I got the results.”

“He’s got good stuff, if he can just control himself,” Mauer said. “That’s part of the process. Getting these guys to play in a playoff atmosphere. I thought he settled down and grinded through some innings, kept it right there.”

Wisconsin took the lead in the top of the third on Ray’s two-out single to right field. Casey Scoggins doubled down the first-base line with one out in the bottom of the inning and scored on a Luis Arraez two-out single to left-center.

The MWL’s batting champ went 4-for-4 and was 7-for-9 in the two games of this series. Cedar Rapids won Game 1 on Wednesday night, 11-3.

Wiel, the league’s RBI champ, then lined a Diplan fastball to dead center and just over the glove of Ray for a triple that put the Kernels on top, 2-1. Travis Blankenhorn’s ensuing grounder found a way to get through the right side of the infield for a third run.

That was enough. Tom Hackimer and Anthony McIver followed Del Rosario with three shutout innings out of the bullpen.

“It was a little tougher scoring runs tonight,” Mauer said. “They had a little different gameplan, and that Diplan kid is all right. He’s got a pretty good arm. I thought it was a pretty well-played game all the way around. We took advantage of some big hits that we bunched together and were able to pull it out.”

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Kernels swept the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with a 3-1 win on Thursday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in the best of three series. Cedar Rapids advances to the Western Division Championship Series for the third consecutive season.

The Kernels will host the Clinton LumberKings in Game 1 of the Western Division Championship on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. The LumberKings polished off a sweep of Peoria on Thursday night. Clinton finished the regular season with the best overall record in the Midwest League (86-54). The Kernels finished the regular season with a 78-61 record. Cedar Rapids and Clinton split the regular season series, with both teams winning nine of 18 games. All of the scoring on Thursday night came in the third inning. Wisconsin struck first in the top of third inning, taking a 1-0 lead. Luis Aviles began the inning by lining a single over Kernels second baseman Luis Arraez into center field. Max McDowell then put down a sacrifice bunt, moving Aviles to second base. Corey Ray's RBI single to right scored Aviles for the game's first run.

Cedar Rapids quickly responded and took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. The Kernels sent eight men to the plate and recorded four hits. Casey Scoggins got things started with a one-out double past by a diving Jake Gatewood at first base. After a groundout, the Kernels collected three straight two-out, run-scoring hits. Arraez's RBI single into left-center plated Scoggins to tie the game 1-1. Zander Wiel then drilled a RBI triple to straight-away center field. Wiel's second triple in two games scored Arraez and gave Cedar Rapids a lead they would not relinquish. Travis Blankenhorn capped off the inning by chopping the ball through the right side for a RBI single to score Wiel, giving the Kernels a 3-1 advantage.

Arraez, the Midwest League batting champion, went 4-for-4 in the game. He went 7-for-9 in the two-game series against Wisconsin. Scoggins collected two hits as the Kernels tallied nine total base hits.

Eduardo Del Rosario (1-0) earned the win for the Kernels, going six strong innings. He allowed one run on five hits while striking out five and walking one. Arraez's bat leads Cedar Rapids to sweep Michael Avallone – MiLB.com – 9/8/16

With four playoff appearances in as many years, Cedar Rapids has seen its share of special performances. But through the first two games of this year's postseason, Luis Arraez has taken things to a whole new level.

After collecting three hits -- two of them triples -- in Game 1 of the Midwest League quarterfinals, the Minnesota infield prospect went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored Thursday to help lead Cedar Rapids to a 3-1 win over Wisconsin at Perfect Game Field and a sweep of the series.

Arraez won the circuit's regular-season batting title with a .347 mark, then continued to swing a heavy stick against the Timber Rattlers. The 19-year-old finished the two-game series 7-for-9 with three RBIs and three runs scored, none of which comes as a surprise to Cedar Rapids hitting coach .

"He grinds out at-bats, knows what he's doing at the plate and sticks to his plan," the former Major Leaguer said. "He finds a way to get the barrel on ball quite often. He's a catalyst for our offense and he had that big two-out RBI that tied the game. It's just the way he goes about his business."

In a 1-0 deficit after the top of the third inning, Arraez tied the game with a two-out RBI single to center field, and he scored on Zander Wiel's triple -- his second in as many games. Wiel crossed the plate on a single to right by Twins' No. 17 prospect Travis Blankenhorn.

"The guys come out ready to play," Dinkelman said. "It's great to keep getting into the playoffs and always exciting. The guys bounced back well these last few nights. In last night's game, after they tied it up, we came back with five. The guys didn't quit, put together good at-bats and found some holes to drive in some runs."

Wiel hasn't stopped hitting since his two-homer, seven-RBI game on Labor Day. The reigning Midwest League Player of the Week collected four hits, including two triples, and two RBIs in the sweep.

"This last week, he's been pretty locked in," Dinkelman said. "He's got his timing down and he's swinging at good pitches. When he gets hot and swinging well, he can carry a team for a while."

Starter Eduardo Del Rosario (1-0) allowed a run on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings to lead the Kernels to their second straight semifinals appearance. Cedar Rapids faces Clinton in Game 1 on Saturday afternoon.

Citizens vocalize support for Twins during City Council meeting Curtis Carden – Elizabethton Star – 9/9/16

As the future of the Elizabethton Twins remains in limbo for the time-being, citizens of Elizabethton made their voices heard in front of city officials Thursday night during the regularly scheduled City Council meeting. Debbie Alexander of Carter County Bank addressed the officials and gave signed petitions with 1,674 signatures of support for the Twins to councilman Wes Frazier that will go to the Minnesota organization for the upcoming discussions.

“There is overwhelming support to keep the Twins in Eizabethton,” Alexander told the councilmen Thursday, citing the work by Carmon Dugger and Joe O’Brien while respectfully asking the city to try to do what they can to work together with the Minnesota organization.

Following Alexander’s comments a handful of citizens also made their voices heard, describing the Twins as a place of fellowship and being a landmark for the city.

“I’ve been gone for a few years,” Mike Simerly said. “But we’ve got such a great thing with Twins. In our playoff game with Johnson City, we had more Elizabethton fans out than Johnson City did.”

Simerly, along with others, also noted the city’s situation with funds and knowing that money is tight but asked the officials to work with Minnesota on a measure to help the team stay within the city.

“I’ve been very active with the Twins organization,” Harold Mains, a local pastor and 16-year volunteer with the Elizabethton Twins, said. “You can’t put a value on someone. We’ve had two families come from Texas that stay in the area … I love Elizabethton. Our fans keep getting younger and I still believe the Twins give us something great in the city.”

The Minnesota Twins organization provided a letter to the City Council during August’s meeting, stating they were pulling their previous announced contribution for stadium renovations, (near $600,000),

“The Twins remain open to renewing talks on this renovation project and are available to consider any proposals,” Minnesota president Dave St. Peter said. “It is imperative that we have a full understanding of what is being considered if we are going to include a significant contribution.”

Mayor Curt Alexander, who was absent from Thursday’s meeting, said the city is adamant in keeping the Twins in the city.

The Twins, which have been based in Elizabethton for 42 years, will be one of the key items on the table for the new Minnesota General Manager. The organization is currently seeking a new GM for Minnesota, and added that once that hire is made, they’ll resume talks with the city.
