BOARD OF EDUCATION GENERAL BUSINESS MEETING April 7, 2011 State Librarian’s Report

1. National Library Week National Library Week is April 10-16, and ’s public libraries willcelebrate with free programs throughout the month. “Create your own story @your library” is this year’s theme, as chosen by the American Library Association. Featured performances will include: “The Slack Key Artistry of Jeff Peterson.” Peterson, a multiple Grammy Award and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, is recognized as one of Hawaii’s most versatile musicians, and is at the heart of today’s Hawaiian music scene. John Keawe, “ATribute to Slack Key.” Keawe, a self-taught slack-key guitarist, is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music Award recipient and a contributing artist on Hawaii’s first Grammy winner, “Slack Key Guitar Volume 2” (2005). I. Made Widana and Anna Reynolds, “The Music and Dance of Bali.” Performers Widana and Reynolds willdemonstrate traditional Balinese music and dance. Gamelan, the traditional musical ensemble found in Bali, includes gongs, bronze metallophone instruments of various sizes, double-headed drums, and flutes. Kealoha, “Slam Poetry.” Slam poetry is a modern day form of performance poetry that is inspiring large audiences worldwide, and Hawaii’s “unofficialslam poet laureate,” Kealoha is an internationally-acclaimed poet and storyteller whose performances combine poetry, storytelling, movement, music, theatre and interactive speaking. Dave Thorne, “The Art of Cartooning.” Thorne is a professional cartoonist who works with the publishers of educational and humorous books. He willpresent various cartoon forms and demonstrate how cartoonists develop their characters. In addition, other public libraries will host programs featuring noted local storytellers, performing artists, crafters, and author talks. Visit the HSPLS website: www.librarieshawaii.org for a complete listing of National Library Week programs or call your local library to find out what programs will be offered.

2. NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society, wins 2011 Nene Award “NERDS” is a humorous story about a group of unpopular fifth graders who run a spy network from inside their school. With the help of cutting- edge science, they transform their nerdy qualities into incredible abilities to battle an array of James Bond-style villains, each with an evil plan more diabolical and more ridiculous than the last. The Nênê Award was established in 1964 as Hawaii’s own “children’s choice” book award, and children in 4th through 6th grades vote at participating public and school libraries for their favorite fiction book written by a living author within the last six years. The Awards ceremony also featured presentations by winners of the student contests celebrating “Found” in persuasive and interpretive essays and posters. Thank you to Board Members Carol Mon Lee and Pamela Young for attending the Awards Ceremony. State Librarian’s Report April 7, 2011 Page 2

3. Molokai Public Library Reopens with new Carpeting Molokai Public Library reopened March 21 following the completion of a carpet replacement project. While the Library was closed, staff members provided limited services utilizing the bookmobile and carport area. Library friends and patrons who visited the interim site were delighted with the temporary outdoor location: a comfortable, secluded area to sit, browse, read, and borrow materials. Singing birds from around the yard and an array of colorful tropical plants contributed to the enjoyable surroundings.

4. Electronic Book Collections HSPLS continues to grow its electronic resources collections, including ebooks, which can be downloaded from our website (www.hawaii.lib.overdrive.com) to your reading device, where it will remain for three weeks before returning automatically to our collection. The attachment, which requires constant updating due to the rapid changes in this developing market, lists nine portable e-reader devices, and a variety of information about each one.

5. State and Federal Tax Forms are Available at Most HSPLS Libraries Hawaii State Tax Forms are available at all our public libraries once again this year, courtesy of a continuing partnership between the Hawaii State Public Library System and the State Department of Taxation. Most branches have Federal tax forms as well. Hawaii state tax forms, Federal forms and forms from other states may be accessed and downloaded remotely around the clock via our online database LegalForms. This database may be accessed at www.librarieshawaii.orc: under “e-Resources” click on “Other Databases,” scroll down to click on “LegalForms,” then click on the appropriate link to individual state or federal tax offices.

6. Tax Check-Off Box Campaign Since 2004, Hawaii taxpayers have been able to support Hawaii’s public libraries by donating $2.00 from an individual state tax return or $4.00 from a joint return. Over the years, thousands of taxpayers have donated $500,000 to HSPLS, and these funds have enabled us to purchase books published about Hawaii as well as additional copies of many children’s books and other materials. These donations have allowed us to purchase materials which we would otherwise be unable to provide for our patrons, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to make a donation to support Hawaii’s public libraries. Mahalo to all who have donated in the past.
