    Extended Liner Notes and Lyrics for My Mind From Love Being Free by Lindsay Straw Since so many of these songs were learned primarily from three singers, I feel that it’s worth elaborating a bit on each. Lizzie Higgins & Jeannie Robertson: Nearly half come from the Scottish musical dynasty of Jeannie Robertson and Lizzie Higgins: “Far Over the Forth,” “Lord Lovat,” “When I Was Not But Sweet Sixteen,” and “Lovely Molly.” Jeannie and Lizzie’s powerful, emotional singing styles and repertoire continue to move me, years after stumbling upon them in the Voice of the People collections. Jeannie Robertson was a major figure in the British folk revival. She and her family were Travellers in Aberdeenshire, and were bearers of a rich musical history. Her daughter Lizzie reluctantly performed and recorded Jeannie’s songs and carried on her legacy, as did many other singers who learned from her over the years. Musical Traditions’ In Memory of Lizzie Higgins and James Porter & Herschel Gower’s Jeannie Robertson: Emergent Singer, Transformative Voice, along with the Mainly Norfolk website, have been invaluable resources for further exploring both the songs and singers. Rita Gallagher: Several songs ­ “The Bonny Light Horseman,” “The Mermaid,” and “Lurgy Stream” ­ were learned from Rita Gallagher’s albums. Rita’s gorgeous voice and intricate ornamentation are hugely responsible for my love of old­style Irish singing. Rita is from Donegal, and when she was younger she learned from Paddy Tunney and other members of his family. She has also been kind enough to take the time to answer a nerdy folk singer’s questions via email.

    BRUCE ROBISON Bruce Robison has been making music professionally for decades. He still discusses his craft with so much enthusiasm he sounds almost like a kid raving about superheroes. That infectious energy is evident in every note of his new album, Bruce Robison & the Back Porch Band, as well as his new project, The Next Waltz, a blossoming community of artists, fans and friends gathering both virtually and at his recording studio in Lockhart, just outside of Austin. In both cases, the point is to celebrate country music’s rich traditions while giving creativity free rein to go where it might, as long as it’s somewhere worth traveling. It’s also about celebrating Robison’s “love of the craft of song.” “Writing is where it all starts for me,” he explains. “Whether it’s my writing, or songs I want to do with somebody else. I love the mechanics of it; how simple it can be.” Keeping it simple — and organic — was the guiding principle behind the latest album, a collection of Robison originals, co-writes and covers that capture country’s most beloved stylistic elements: good-time, lighthearted romps (“Rock and Roll Honky Tonk Ramblin’ Man”; “Paid My Dues”) and wistful, sometimes bittersweet ballads (“Long Time Coming”; “Still Doin’ Time”). But even the Who’s “Squeezebox” — which Robison calls “a great country song by some English dudes” — shows up, in a lively version dressed with cajun fiddle by Warren Hood and acoustic guitar and harmonies by Robison’s wife, Kelly Willis. Hood is one of a hand-picked crew of regulars tapped for Next Waltz recording sessions with Jerry Jeff Walker, Randy Rogers, Jack Ingram, Rodney Crowell, Willis, Hayes Carll, Turnpike Troubadours, Sunny Sweeney, Reckless Kelly and others.

They will come to us from across the United States and several different countries. Their experiences inform their work, and we will, for a brief moment in time, commune together as the universal languages of music, spoken word, and movement unite us in hope and healing. Not only has the world changed significantly since we first opened our doors 25 years ago, it has changed dramatically in the last year as we have endured the devastating impact of a global pandemic, social injustice, political uncertainty, and any number of other things.

It traces the growing reliance upon contingent work as the foundation for industrial capitalism along the Pacific Coast; the shaping of urban space according to the demands of workers and capital; the formation of a working class subject through the discourse and social practices of both laborers and intellectuals; and workers’ struggles to improve their circumstances in the face of coercive and onerous conditions. Woven together, these strands reveal the consequences of a regional economy built upon contingent and migratory forms of labor. This workforce was hardly new to the American West, but the Pacific Coast’s reliance upon contingent labor reached its apogee after World War I, drawing hundreds of thousands of young men through far flung circuits of migration that stretched across the Pacific and into Latin America, transforming its largest urban centers and working class demography in the process. The presence of this substantial workforce (itinerant, unattached, and racially heterogeneous) was out step with the expectations of the modern American worker (stable, married, and white), and became the warrant for social investigators, employers, the state, and other workers to sharpen the lines of solidarity and exclusion.

When I Get Home Edward Hammon Boatner was born on November 13, 1898 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the family of an itinerant minister. Boatner’s father, Dr. Daniel Webster Boatner traveled frequently from church to church, and thus provided his son an introduction to rural church singing. Edward Boatner received his musical education at Western University in Kansas, the Boston Conservatory, New England Conservatory, the Longy School of Music, and the Chicago College of Music. In his lifetime, Boatner arranged and published more than 200 spirituals, with written works including Story of the Spiritual: Thirty Spirituals and Their Origins, and the spiritual musicals, The Man of Nazareth and The Origin of the Spirituals. His arrangements have been recorded by Roland Hayes, Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson, Leontyne Price and Nelson Eddy. Boatner achieved acclaim as a singer and also served as music director of the National Baptist Convention (1925-1933), as music director at Samuel Huston College in Austin and as Dean of Music at Wiley College. He also operated a studio in New York City where he trained choral groups, gave private voice and piano instruction, and trained actors. An avid writer, Boatner published books on music theory and composition. Writings include The Damaging Results of Racism, Black Humor, Great Achievements in Black and White and the novel One Drop of Blood (New York Public Library, Digital Library Collections). Edward Boatner died in New York in 1981, leaving a legacy of developing the concert spiritual genre in which elements of folk song and art song are blended.
