1 I am delighted that Council has selected Professor Dame Ann Dowling FREng FRS as President's the Academy’s presidential nominee. The election of the President by the Fellows will take place at the Annual General Meeting on 15 September. A world authority on column combustion and acoustics, Dame Ann is an outstanding engineer and inspirational leader with extensive research and policy expertise. Her achievements have also been recognised by the Royal Society, US National Academy of Engineering and the French Academy of Sciences.

A number of major changes are underway that aim to modernise aspects of the Academy’s business and to enhance our effectiveness. The implementation of the membership review will improve our process for electing new Fellows; the redevelopment of the Academy’s website will provide new opportunities for engagement; and the development of an online grants management system will bring us in line with best practice. Another important change being proposed is the modernisation of our governance structure, which has not been formally reviewed since our formation 38 years ago.

The governance review was chaired by Professor Sir William Wakeham FREng. Having examined the existing structure and consulted with Fellows, the Governance Review Group recommended a raft of changes to Council aimed at ensuring that the Academy’s constitution is fit for the future. By now, Fellows will have received notice of an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on 7 April. I do encourage you to attend the EGM and to vote on the special resolution to adopt the amended Charter and Statutes. I hope that, like me, you will see significant benefit in the changes proposed.

The governance review also explored how the Academy engages its Fellows and Meetings and visitors concluded that considerable improvement is possible.
