‘I’m always grateful to for his huge kindness. He gave me confidence in life and I have followed in his footsteps. I was very lucky. There were lots of beautiful girls around and he encouraged me to be a painter’. Lydia Corbett

In 1954, the pony-tailed teenager, Lydia Corbett was introduced to at Vallauris on the French Riviera when the artist was separating from his wife Francois Gilot. Her presence brought a new energy to his work and she became the favoured for various works of art, including The Heads of Sylvette, a series of moulded metal sculptures produced by Picasso. She was known then as Sylvette David, and changed her name to Corbett during this period.

In 1968, Lydia moved to England and gave her creative energy to painting. She has since exhibited in London, Europe and Japan. The Anthony Petullo Foundation in America has a collection of her watercolours. In 1993 the Tate Gallery staged a major exhibition of Picasso’s sculpture and paintings to coincide with a documentary film on Lydia and Picasso shown on BBC2. In 2014 parallel exhibitions in London and Germany showcased the work of Corbett and Picasso.

Corbett’s fluid lines bring life to familiar themes and her ‘assured and gentle approach to the human figure’, recalls the work of Marc Chagall.

Biography. With no formal training Michael Snow showed an early interest in poetry, literature and the arts at school in Rugby and as a librarian in Manchester, and with Tony Connor and Malcolm Bishop, he founded the Peterloo Group.

After visiting an exhibition of St Ives artists in Liverpool, including Alexander Mackenzie, Snow moved there in 1951. Two years later he was elected member of the newly found Penwith Society along with Hepworth and Nicholson.

Snow was particularly enamoured with the lyrical expression of John Wells, W.Barns-Graham, Alex Mackenzie, George Dannatt and Ben Nicholson. His work continued to change and evolve; his 1960s works bearing more resemblance to the painterly expressionism of Bryan Winter, Terry Frost and Roger Hilton. By the 1970s Snow’s personal interest in science resulted in works such as Sun & Moon and Blue Planet. From 1965 to 1985 Snow entered the field of education. He taught at the vibrant Exeter College of Art where he became Director of the Combined Honours Course. His interdisciplinary openness made him popular with his students. Michael’s succinct catalogue statement for his 24 work show at London’s Rowan Gallery in 1964 explained his pictures as ‘additions to nature, not imitations of it. I may receive a stimulus to start work from a new landscape but my real problem is the solution of the canvas - painting matters if it is honest...because it is not only a visual addition to our environment..it is the only way to learn to see’.

Michael Neville Seward Snow, painter and teacher, born Manchester 27 June 1930, married 1950 Sylvia Jarrett (divorced 1956), 1957 Margaret Lambert (one son, Justin). Died Hillerton Cross, Devon, 15 July 2012. Solo Exhibition. Belgrave Gallery, 2015.

Biography. Peter Thursby [1930-2011] was born in Salisbury and brought-up in Jamaica. After National Service he studied art at St Pauls Cheltenham and subsequently with Paul Feiler and Ernest Pascoe at the West of England College of Art. Throughout the 1950s Peter’s output was largely in the form of paintings, but by 1957 his work became textural and fully abstract. From the early 60s his output was almost exclusively sculpture, winning his first major award in 1962. In the 1970s he produced his Podmen Sculptures followed by the Sarum and Flight series. His monumental works, cast by the Morris Singer Foundry came in the 1980s. Thursby gave generously of his time to art education and arts organisations including the West of England Academy of which he was president. In 1995 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of The West of England, Bristol. His career culminated in his Optimism series, one of which is in the Queen’s Collection. His legacy was a body of work that is widely recognised as a significant contribution to 20th century sculpture.

Two people to whom Thursby acknowledged a debt and admiration are Paul Feiler and Ernest Pascoe. Both Slade graduates, they were his tutors at The West of England College of Art (now University of The West of England) between 1953-54. They each had a significant influence in Thursby’s development as a sculptor and painter. In 1953 Feiler bought a chapel (once the studio of Stanhope Forbes) at Kerris near Penzance. This was the year Thursby became one of Feilers students. In order to inspire his students in their work Feiler actively forged a link between them and leading Cornish artists, arranging for the students to spend periods in Cornwall at studios including those of Peter Lanyon, Roger Hilton and Terry Frost. Thursby later became a member of both the Newlyn and Penwith Societies.

The Bristol & Exeter railway was opened through Durston in Somerset in July 1842, by 1867 it was carrying through trains from London Paddington to Penzance and in 1876 the line became part of the Great Western Railway. In 1906 goods trains started to use the new Langport & Castle Cary line between Cogland and Castle Cary and passenger trains joined later in the same year which shortened the journey from London to Taunton by over 20 miles. Initially an ordinary double-track flat junction was built which meant that down trains from Bristol could be delayed by the up trains from Taunton to Castle Cary crossing in front of them. In 1931 work began to convert this track to a flying junction which would allow the Bristol down trains to cross up and over the Castle Cary route.
