The Fourth of July celebration in Nespelem was full of activities for young and old enthusiasts alike. The annual celebration began with families setting up camp within the circle where they’ve been for generations. Camp openings determined by the family’s generosity; some have lost loved ones in the past year and put on a dinner and giveaway, others open annually with a dinner open to all. executive Order Day, the day president Ulysses Grant signed the papers that established the Colville reservation is observed, along with the horse parade. Men, women, and children dressed in their inest regalia, horses, too, ride around the circle. many people observe the near solemn occasion. some regalia may be in excess of one hundred years old. Afterwards riders come to the circle and are recognized. sunday was play day for the children. Games and give ways with them in mind were conducted all day long. The traditional dinner is always held on the fourth, this too is free and open to the public. midweek bingo sessions make for fun fundraising. And then Thursday family specials are held. Usually family rejoinings take place, often children are give Indian names at this time. Friday, saturday, and sunday are powwow and stick game days on each end of the concession stands. Contests for young and old are witnessed by large crowds that make for a fun weekend. Winners are selected and honored sunday before the powwow is over. And then teepees are taken down and everyone goes home.
