Every year since the flood of 2013, the third Saturday in June has been set aside for residents of Calgary to come together to celebrate the awesome community spirit of Calgarians. The idea is to meet neighbours, make new friends, have fun and maybe work together on a project that benefits the entire community. Events range from neighbourhood pot lucks and block parties to whole community events and parades of garage sales.

This year in the Northern Hills many groups of residents came together to host block parties, and the NHCA and Vivo worked together on an evening event: Our Big Backyard Movie Night. Thank you to all those community residents who invited us to their events, and fund raised for so many worthy causes on the day. It was great to see so much community spirit in the Northern Hills!

The movie had to be moved indoors, due to the looming, black clouds overhead, but everyone who attended had a great time playing games and having faces painted with the North Central Family Support Program and Vivo Play Ambassadors, shopping at the Symons Valley Farmers’ Market, Good Earth and vendor stalls, and grabbing dinner or snacks at the Canadian Brewhouse food truck. The booked popcorn truck no-showed, but the awesome, community-minded people over at the Canadian Brewhouse (Harvest Hills) saved the day with free popcorn for everyone!

We hope everyone had fun, whatever they took part in, and we look forward to Neighbour Day in June 2017!

A huge thank you to all our sponsors and donors to our free prize draw: Ward 3 Councillor Jim Stevenson, Canadian Brewhouse (Harvest Hills), Vivo, Jiffy Lube (Creekside), Applebee’s, Good Earth (Coventry Hills) and Landmark Cinemas (Country Hills).

Thanks to everyone who sent in photos from the day for us to use in this photo collage! Photos courtesy of: Conrad Figuerola, Stephan Jarche, Danielle Latouche, Rick Lundy, Moraig McCabe, Denny & Ron Stewart and Jesse Stewart. 6 NORTHERN EDGE NEWS AUGUST 2016 Is City Hall Broken?
