Two years’ jail for Andy Hayhurst ANDY Hayhurst, aged 52, the former Lancashire and Somerset cricketer who has latterly been playing for Alvanley in the Vivio Cheshire County League, has been sent to prison for two years after what Manchester Crown Court judge John Potter described as “a spectacular fall from grace”. He was found guilty of theft, obtaining property by deception, false accounting and concealing criminal property. Hayhurst was the £50,000 a year Lancashire Cricket Board officer responsible for allocating funds to local clubs. But is was stated in court that he faked invoices and in more than 20 incidents between August, 2006 and July 2013 he admitted pocketing £107,548 which was used for personal purposes including lavish family holidays. This money had been earmarked as grants which needy clubs never received. The defendant had made a repayment of £22,713 and planned to continue to do so. In a 12-season county career Hayhurst scored 7,825 runs and took 110 wickets, but in recent years he had worked as a teacher and lived at Frodsham, playing for Alvanley and becoming a popular member, making occasional league appearances, mostly for the 2nd XI. An Alvanley club member told Newsletter: “Andy was modest and well-liked; a good club member. The details of the fraud have come as a shock”. WEEK 9 NEWSLETTER: p12

Cheshire lose by innings CHESHIRE lost by the massive margin of an innings and 50 runs in their first Unicorns game against Shropshire at Whitchurch on Sunday and Monday last week. The game, all over in two days, proved disastrous for Cheshire as their usually powerful batting line up was swept aside in both innings by a team they had easily beaten in April in the one day knock out . On the first day, they were all out for 100 (Nick Anderson 22), before improving their situation by reducing Shropshire to 82-6 and 146-7. Their eighth wicket pair of Tom Weston (105) and Richard Aucott (91) then put on 177 and the reply closed at a massive 358-9, Danny Woods having the best bowling figures with 3-91. Cheshire’s second innings fared only slightly better at 108 all out, Jack Williams 26, none of the batsmen again having an answer to the pace of Ben Sanderson who had taken 5-19 in the first dig. Sanderson added a super 6-39 bringing his tally for the match to 11 for 58 as it ended at t ea tie on Day Two. Skipper Danny Woods said afterwards: “We were given a real hammering and need to improve rapidly. One of the problems was the Dukes ball used in Minor Counties games which offer a lot of swing. We use Readers in the County League, which puts us at a disadvantage. Perhaps we ought to use the Duke in the league”. The county’s next outing is against Wales at Newport on Sunday - Tuesday, June 21 - 23. O CHESHIRE Development XI’s first outing is against Warwickshire Under 19s at Elworth on Monday, June 29 (11 a.m.).

NATIONAL CLUB KO ROUND 3 RESULT Chester Boughton Hall 184 (Alex Money 73, Warren Goodwin 39) beat Bootle 164 (Warren Goodwin 3-21, Bob Evans 3-32) .

VETS CRICKET CHESHIRE travelled to the North-East to play Northumberland at Stocksfield on Wednesday in the National 50 Plus county championship losing a high-scoring game. Northumberland rattled up 290-5 as Cheshire bowlers - in urgent need of reinforcement – continiued to struggle. Phil Catterall contributed a fine 107 and Gary Cash 71 in a partnership of 113, but the team were all out for 229. On Wednesday this week Cheshire take on old rivals Lancashire at Widnes (1.30 p.m.), then host Cumberland in a re-arranged game at the same venue a week later. In the National Over 60s championship, Cheshire won by 30 runs away to Derbyshire on Tuesday last week thanks largely to a fine bowling performance by skipper Chris Lees. Scores: Cheshire 189-6 (Steve Yates 49, Ted Williams 48no, Nick Sharp 45, Chris Lees 30); Derbyshire 159 (Chris Lees 6-23, Bob Yardley 2-21). On Tuesday this week Cheshire host Lancashire at Cheadle Hulme (1.30 p.m.).

Alistair Davies’ Umpires Quiz LAST WEEK’8 QUESTION: A short-pitched delivery bounces over the head of the striker standing upright at the crease. Without going to ground, the ball lands on top of a boundary-marker flag. How many runs are scored? ANSWER: A No ball would be called, for which one run is scored, while a boundary four is also recorded making five runs in total. (Note that a six can only be scored off a hit by the bat. Laws 42.6 (a) (ii) and 19.5 (b). THIS WEEK’S POSER: The striker – after playing at and making contact with a fair delivery - sees the ball going towards his stumps. He knocks it away with the arm holding the bat. There is an appeal by the fielders - would the batsman be out?
