Transitions

Oregon Birds is at a turning point. As with every other aspect of our lives, the times are changing for Oregon's birding community, especially with regard to the ways in which we communicate with one another. Information exchange is literally instantaneous in these times, not just within Oregon, but throughout the globe. A birder in Ulan Bator can receive a pinpoint location for Oregon's first Mottled Whisker-finch, just minutes after it is found, at the same instant as the next birder down the street. Wc can send photos and maps to one another... we can send sound files and videos... instantaneously. Old news may only be minutes or hours old, rather than weeks or months old.

Where does this leave Oregon Birds, the quarterly journal of Oregon Field Ornithology? When information is updated electronically more often than the quarter-hour, how can Oregon's birding journal maintain its relevance when it appears every quarter-year? What information is important enough to dedicate to a printed page? How often should this information be printed? Should some information be presented in electronic form? Whatever is decided, who is going to accomplish the desired tasks? These questions have been debated recently... debated on the internet, with instantaneous exchange!

The OFO Board is not solely responsible for composing alternatives to respond to these changing times.... The Board is responsible for deliberating and deciding the course of action that will be taken. This includes: the percentage of the membership's dues that would be committed to publication; the production schedule and deadlines; and any stipend or expense reimbursement that would be offered to the production staff. Any member can bend the car of the Board. Any member is a potential volunteer. Any member can deliver a proposal to take Oregon Birds forward. Any proposal would need to include a prospective team, a budget, a schedule, and a good sales pitch to the OFO Board. It is the members' publication... the journal's future course is in the members' hands.

I expect the next OB editor and the next OB team to take the journal in a different direction than I might have gone, and make some changes that I might not have chosen. This is the way it ought to be. Some may get what they want from upcoming changes to OB, in whatever form they take, and some may not... I'll be along for the ride, whichever way it goes. Every volunteer membership organization evolves, grows, shrinks, struggles, bickers, reconciles... some don't survive. This one will survive, as long as the graying invites the growing to move forward together.

Oregon Birds 31(3): 109, Fall 2005 The Status of Chestnut-collared Longspur in Oregon

n fall, 2002, Oregon received its largest movement of Chestnut-collared Longspurs on record, with at least 11 birds along the outer coast. Prior to that year, only six records had been accepted by the IOBRC. In subsequent years there have been additional reports, of which some have been accepted by the committee and some are still in circulation. One generally accepted record was not submitted to the committee. The table below shows all Oregon records published or known to the senior author. The map places these records geographically and by season.

Oregon's first Chestnut-collared Longspur was found at Fern Ridge Reservoir, Lane Co. on 1 May 1976 by Larry McQueen, oddly enough during the initial chartering meeting at which Oregon Field Ornithologists was founded. The next record was in November, 1981 when one was found in the Klamath basin by Steve Summers. One appeared at the south jetty of the Columbia River (SJCR) on 17 July 1985 and remained for weeks.

The first suggestion of an occasional movement of small numbers of this species through Oregon came when David Fix found single birds on three separate occasions in mid-September and early October at Diamond Lake sewage ponds in the late 1980s (Fix 1991). No further records occurred until one was found at SJCR 9 October to 1 November, 1998 (Scott Rea, Mike Patterson et al. in Gilligan 1999), after which they have been all but annual in increasing numbers.

Fall, 2002 brought an extraordinary 11 birds to western Oregon, one of which was photographed (see accompanying photo essay on identification) and most of which involved multiple observers. Unlike previous years, in which most records were from southwestern Oregon, several of the 2002 reports were from the north coast, where at least 4 birds were present in early November. Fall 2003 brought a similar flight, with a flock of from 5 to perhaps as many as 15 birds at .

Map shows all records accepted by OBRC, still in circulation or not yet submitted. Records not accepted are not shown but fall in the same pattern.

The map displays quite clearly that this species is far more regular as a fall migrant in the southwestern quarter of Oregon than it is elsewhere. It is unclear why Clatsop County is such an exception, although longspur habitat is concentrated and heavily covered in the right season. It is possible that the regional pattern is an artifact of observer coverage, but several factors suggest otherwise. Observer coverage of potential longspur habitat is generally good and widespread in Lincoln, Lane and Multnomah counties during the appropriate season, and is fairly regular in some good habitat in Tillamook County and in some of the Willamette valley. Some of these areas report Lapland Longspurs on a regular basis (they are annual in small numbers on the coast). None has ever reported a Chestnut-collared Longspur. The only two Willamette Valley records are from spring (early March and early May), though the March bird probably wintered in the area.

It is unclear why Chestnut-collared Longspurs are not reported in eastern Oregon, but the most likely reason is that habitat is not concentrated and neither are observers. Vast swathes of eastern Oregon are reasonably good habitat for longspurs and there are few observers. Also, much of the habitat is simply inaccessible: consider only the wheat counties, Treasure Valley in Malheur County and the Harney, Alvord and Warner basins. Even the land that is public is enormous, often impossible or illegal to enter and is far from most observers. It is likely that a concentrated effort at the right season would find Chestnut-collared Longspurs in these areas. Given that McCown's Longspur has been found several times in the Klamath Basin, it is likely to be found in far eastern Oregon as well.

As shown in the graph illustration above, most records are in the first half of October and the first half of November, with a definite break between them. In addition to records (which count multiple birds as one record using OBRC standards), all five of the multiple-bird records occurred in exactly the same peak pattern (2 groups in the first half of October and three in the first half of November, one group of which remained through November, arrivals shown with numbers on graph peaks), which suggests that there is a genuine double peak to the fall movement. We do not know whether this represents movements from different geographic areas, different age classes, different sexes or some other factors.

Longspur identification can be complicated, with some variation in appearance even in a flock of one species, but there are good references available. The best of these is probably Jon Dunn and David Beadle's 1998 article in Birders Journal. This article includes a collection of photos and a color plate.
