The aphid species Aphis spiraecola was first described in 1914 by Edith Marion Patch as green citrus aphid. It is distributed almost throughout the world but predominant in the United States. Since then, the pest has been causing considerable losses in various host plants in many con nents. In this report, the occurrence of this aphid species was reported on celery for the first me in semi-arid region of Rajasthan, India. Celery fields of experimental sites at research farm, ICAR-Na onal Research Centre on Seed Spices, Ajmer were observed systema cally during Rabi season of 2019-20 and 2020-21 for pest infesta on. At this loca on, summers are extreme hot and winters are cold; the mean daily temperature 37 to 480C and 6 to 120C, respec vely and rela ve humidity 60-80 per cent recorded during the study period. Adult aphids infes ng celery were collected and preserved for iden fica on and documenta on. Infesta on of A. spiraecola was ini ated on celery plants in last week of December with 2-3 aphid/leaf and then its popula on slightly fluctuate low and high ll first week of February. Peak infesta on was recorded in last week of February with 19-32 aphid/umbel. Newly emerged nymphs are small, oval to pear shaped and greenish in colour. Adults are oval shaped, body length of aptera is about 1.2-2.4 mm and brighten yellow green in colour. A pair of visible appendages, the siphunculi or cornicles is clearly projected from the posterior part of the abdomen (Fig. 1). A tail like protrusion (cauda) is present on posterior end of the body just above rectal aperture. Alate adult has translucent two winged migra ons with black thorax and two visible compound eyes (Fig.2). A. spiraecola also feeds on coriander (Coriandrum sa vum), carrot (Daucus carota), citrus (Rutaceae), Malus sp. & Prunus (Rosaceae), Chilli (Capsicum annum) and some cucurbitaceous plants. Nymphs and adults colonize on underside of leaves along with midrib and suck the cell sap from the infested plant parts. Infested plants show leaf curling and white silvery patches appear on leaves. Early infesta on deteriorates plant growth and caused significantly yield loss. The crop was also received the infesta on of other aphid species viz., Myzus persicae, Aphis gossypii and Hyadaphis coriandri.
Fig. 1 A. spiraecola (Wingless adult) Fig. 2 A. spiraecola (Alate adult)
Management of aphids on celery is very difficult owing to their polyphagous habit and easily develops resistance against a number of chemical pes cides, hence regular monitoring and sustainable management is only the way to minimize aphid infesta on. Apply field sanita on, spray of azadirach n 0.03EC @ 5ml/lit followed by Ver cillium lecani (1x108cfu/g) @ 6g/lit., and fipronil 5SC @ 1.6 ml/lit.

Under the project 25 farmers were selected for pes cides free cumin produc on in one hectare area each in the village. All input to raise good crop at farmer's field were given by ICAR-NRCSS as per the protocol of Good Agricultural Prac ces (GAP) for cumin. For nutrient input of nitrogen phosphorus and potash was given inorganically through source from Urea, DAP and MOP at the rate of 30:20:20 kg/ha. Organic amendment by incorpora ng in form of compost was done 30 days prior to seed sowing and Phosphorus Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) and Azotobactor mul plied in compost for 15 days was given at the me of sowing.
Irriga on and weeding was done as per the needs. There was 4 to 5 irriga on given through sprinkler system and 2 to 3 manual weeding was carried out during the whole crop dura on. The pests and diseases management of the crop from seed sowing to crop maturity was monitored by the scien sts involved in the project and suitable non chemical products were given for effec ve control. The pests and diseases of cumin was observed and treated successfully. The major pests and diseases were wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cumini), Blight (Alterneria burnsii), Powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni), nematode (Pratylenchus thornei ), thrips (Thrips tabaci), Aphids (Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae). The bioagents/ botanicals applied as seed treatment, soil applica on with FYM and as foliar spray to control of pests and diseases includes Trichoderma viridi, Trichoderma harzanium, Paecilomyces lilacinus, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus sub lis, Ver cillium lecanii , Botanical Insec cide and Azadirach n 10000ppm for wilt/root rot and nematode management at me of germina on to early cumin crop growth. Trichoderma viride (1x108 CFU's/gm) was given @10g/kg of seed mixing of at the me of sowing and soil applica on of Trichoderma viride, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Paecilomyces lilacinus were given as prepared with decomposed FYM and kept for 12-15 day under shade covered with gunny bag. During vegeta ve stage to crop maturity wilt (Fusarium oxysporum), Blight ( Alternaria sp.) and Nematode (Pratylenchus thornei) and Aphids ( Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii) were managed by the applica on of Bacillus sub lis (1x108 bacterial cells / ml), Trichoderma viride (1x108 CFU's/gm), Paeceliomyces lilanicius (1x108 CFU's/ml), Azadirach n 10000ppm and Botanical Insec cides . There was 4 to 5 applica on of above compound was given to the crop for complete protec on. -Krishna Kant, B. K. Mishra, S. N. Saxena, and S. R. In Ajwain order to increase the income of farmers, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Mr. Ramesh Kumar made a plan to connect the farmers of the area with the cul va on of spices and contacted the progressive farmers who wish to grow these spice crops. The farmers reported lack of quality seeds and technology to grow the seed spice crops. Looking to this problem, Mr. Ramesh Kumar contacted Dr. Arvind Kumar Verma, scien st of ICAR-Na onal Research Centre on Seed Nigella Spices, Ajmer, Rajasthan. He said that there are immense possibili es of seed spices cul va on in Sonbhadra district of U ar Pradesh and if the farmers will grow the high value low volume seed spices can earn a good income. Sub- Divisional Magistrate Mr. Ramesh Kumar made available the seeds of these seed spices with produc on technology ma ers to the farmers through Dr. Arvind Kumar Verma. Dr. Cumin Verma made available the seeds and booklets of ten seed spices to the farmers through the Indian Postal Service. The farmers of the Tehsil have emphasized on the cul va on of spices along with pulses, oilseeds crops etc. Farmers of that area are bringing crop diversifica on to their fields so as to increase the net income. Some progressive farmers of Tehsil changed their mode of farming and grown some seed spices Celery like coriander, cumin, fennel, coriander, fenugreek, kasuri methi, celery, nigella, dill, anise and celery. increase the income from these spices, next year, they will do it on a large scale. For the area expansion of seed spice crops, the climate of Sonbhadra district of U ar Pradesh is very suitable and the produc on of all these crops has been very good during first year itself. This ini a ve being made for the farmers to become self-reliance has become a topic of Anise discussion in the area at the moment. Taking this link forward, the demand for leafy coriander in the market is very high in the summer season and its price is also high so, farmers can easily get Rs 100–200 per kg. For cul va on of coriander for the leaf purpose, 2 kg seed has been sent from Ajmer center which has been distributed to 10 farmers and all these farmers will grow it under shade net on trial basis. If the test is successful, it will be grown on more area during Coriander the summer season so that farmers can get more income in less me. Mr. Ramesh Kumar also said that a team of farmers will soon be sent for training at ICAR- Na onal Research Centre on Seed Spices, Ajmer. Dr. S.N.
