Kutztown University of Pennsylvania

 Kutztown University’s Music Department will host a performance of the complete Brahms sonatas for violin and piano, performed by Dr. Maria Asteriadou and Kurt Nikkanen, at 7:30 p.m., today, in Schaefer Auditorium room 100. This event is free.  Kutztown University will welcome cross-cultural communication speaker Dr. Michael Oleska to campus from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., tomorrow, in Beekey Education building room 218. Originally from Allentown, Oleska has spent the last 30 years in Alaska, where he is recognized as an elder by the Alaska Federation of Natives. Oleska will speak about how culture influences the way we understand each other. The first presentation, which explores the meaning of culture, is from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The second presentation, on one-on-one communication and how people of different cultures miscommunicate, is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.  Kutztown University’s Music Department will host a performance by the Percussion Ensemble, at 7:30 p.m., tomorrow, in Schaefer Auditorium. This event is free.  Diversity educator Jessica Pettitt will speak at 3 p.m., Wednesday, in McFarland Student Union room 183. Pettitt’s presentation, Social Justice: When Diversity Isn’t Enough, is an interactive program that gives participants the tools they need to inspire change, dismantle oppression and recognize privilege.  Kutztown University’s Music Department will host a piano master class, from 8 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, in Old Main room 163, the Georgian room.  Kutztown University will hosts\ Love Your Body Day, a daylong event offering information tables, chocolate, yoga and more, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, in McFarland Student Union room 218. KU alumna, award-winning international storyteller and TED Talks talent search finalist Kristen Pedemonti will give the keynote speech at 3 p.m. The Love Your Body campaign, sponsored by the National Organization for Women, aims to speak out against harmful and disrespectful advertisements and images of women, and to encourage media images of women and girls that are diverse and realistic, promoting health and self-esteem.  Kutztown University’s Marlin and Regina Miller Art Gallery will host an opening reception for the art exhibition “Modern Markers: 21st Century Craft in Berks and Lehigh Counties,” from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, in the Sharadin Arts Building. This event is free.

Mansfield University of Pennsylvania

 The Young Men’s Choral Festival (YMCF), hosted by the Mansfield University student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), will be held on Friday. The festival will feature two concerts in Steadman Theatre, The Young Men’s Choir at 4 p.m. and ’Round Midnight, an award winning a capella quartet, at 7 p.m. Both are free.  “The Conjuring” will be the weekly film series presentation at Mansfield University’s Straughn Hall at 8 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m.; 3 and 8 p.m., Saturday; and 3 p.m., Sunday. Admission is $1. MU students with ID are free.

Millersville University of Pennsylvania

 Millersville University’s Biology Colloquium will present the lecture "Blood, Brains and Behavior: Individual Differences in a Wild European Songbird and the Role of Stress and Sex Steroid Hormones," presented by Dr. Alex Baugh, assistant biology professor at Swarthmore College, at 4 p.m., Wednesday, in Caputo Hall.  Millersville University’s Cultural Affairs Committee will present a Grace Kelly quintet at 7 p.m., Wednesday, in the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center. The quintet will perform musical numbers by Grace Kelly, an Asian-American jazz saxophonist, vocalist, songwriter and bandleader.  Jazz at the 'Ville will feature the Millersville University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab Band performing a variety of selections including swing era favorites, jazz standards and works by contemporary jazz composers at 7:30 p.m., Friday, in the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center.  On Friday,  OperaLancaster will present the ghoulish Opera Macabre, an opera cabaret which will feature ghosts, witches, magic, madness and zombies, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, and 2 p.m., Sunday, at the Ware Center, Millersville University Lancaster.  Chelsea Snow from Millersville University will perform vocal selections in her senior recital at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, in the Winter Visual and Performance Center. Senior Elina Sergeyev will perform her senior recital at 7:30 p.m.

Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania

 Shippensburg University will host “Truth Values: One Girl’s Romp Through M.I.T.’s Male Math Maze” at 7 p.m., Thursday, in Memorial Auditorium. The play is free, but reservations are requested. The event is sponsored by STEM-UP PA, the National Science Foundation and the university’s Women’s Center, Office of Social Equity and Department of Mathematics. STEM-UP PA is a program that does research to address gender equity among science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) faculty at higher education teaching institutions in Central Pennsylvania. Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania

 Slippery Rock University’s Art Departments will host the 2013 Regional High School Art Exhibition today through Thursday in the Martha Gault Art Gallery in Maltby Center. A closing reception will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday. Prior to the reception, SRU art faculty will conduct a campus Art Walk at 4 p.m.  Slippery Rock University will host its annual Healthfest offering free health screenings and information from regional health organizations for 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., tomorrow, in the Aebersold Student Recreation Center.  Slippery Rock University’s annual Empty Bows Project will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 4 to 7 p.m., tomorrow, in the Smith Student Center. The event, which includes a meager meal of soup and bread, is designed to increase awareness of local, statewide and world hunger issues. Volunteers hand-painted more than 500 ceramic bowls for the event. Participants take home the bowl to remind them of hunger issues.  Slippery Rock University will celebrate homecoming week today through Sunday, including a pep rally at 7 p.m., Friday, in the Aebersold Student Recreation Center and the homecoming parade through downtown at 10 a.m., Saturday followed by the SRU women’s soccer game against Mansfield at 1 p.m. in Egli Field and the SRU vs. Clarion football game at 2 p.m. in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.  Fiber artist Akiko Kotani, Slippery Rock University professor emeritus of art and the 2013 Pittsburgh Artist of the Year, will lecture on her art at 12:30 p.m., tomorrow, in SRU’s Art Building.  Slippery Rock University’s soccer program will host its Ring of Honor Banquet at 7 p.m., Friday, in the Smith Student Center Ballroom. Seven men and women soccer alumni will be inducted. The 20th anniversary of the women’s soccer program will be celebrated with activities through the day. A banquet is planned for 6 p.m. in the Smith Student Center Theater.

West Chester University of Pennsylvania

 The 113th Anniversary International Exhibition of Works on Paper exhibit featuring works from The Philadelphia Water Color Society is open to the public during gallery hours now through Oct. 26 in The New Gallery at West Chester University.  West Chester University’s Philadelphia location will host an Open House for the Bachelors of Social Work and B.S. in Criminal Justice from 5 to 6 p.m. and Masters of Social Work and M.S. in Criminal Justice from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, at 701 Market Street, third floor classrooms, Philadelphia. Click to register.  West Chester University’s School of Music will present the Fall Choral Festival featuring WCU's Men's Chorus, Women's Chorus, and Cantari Donne at 8:15 p.m., Wednesday, in Asplundh Concert Hall.  West Chester’s "The Big Read" will present the panel discussion West Chester College during the Vietnam Era from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Thursday in the Philips Autograph Library. The panel is composed of former students and faculty who attended or taught at West Chester College during the 1960s.  WCU’s Theatre & Dance Department will present the performance Godspell Friday through Oct. 26at the Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre. Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, Godspell is a timeless tale of friendship, loyalty and love Godspell, is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time. Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania

 Bloomsburg University’s Fall Choral Concert, featuring the Women’s Choral Ensemble, Husky Singers and Concert Choir, will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, in First Presbyterian Church, 345 Market St., Bloomsburg. The concert is free.  Bloomsburg University’s Quest program will offer the Full Moon Night Hike at 9 p.m., Thursday, starting from the Quest office on BU’s Upper Campus. The cost for the hike is $5 per person. Quest events are open to members of the community as well as BU students, faculty and staff.  Residence Hall C at California University will be given a new name, Ivan H. and Adelaide Ivill Guesman Hall, at a ceremonial re-dedication at 11 a.m., today, outside the hall. The name honors benefactors Ivan '41 and Adelaide '38 Guesman. Ivan Guesman taught in the Education Department at Cal U for 13 years, and his wife was a lifelong educator. Among the speakers will be Interim University President Geraldine M. Jones.  California University of Pennsylvania will introduce itself to prospective students and their families at a Discovery Day event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., today, on campus. High school students who are beginning their college search are invited to learn about Cal U’s academic offerings, housing and student activities; meet faculty members; and take a campus tour. Cheyney University of Pennsylvania

 The coronation ceremony for Mr. and Miss Cheyney University will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, in the Marian Anderson Music Center.  Homecoming week highlights will include Saturday’s parade at 10:45 a.m. and a tour of the Aquaponics facility at 4:30 p.m.

Clarion University of Pennsylvania

 Clarion University English Club and Sigma Tau Delta will present “Reading for the Cure for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research” from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, in Moore Hall. All are welcome.  The female singer/songwriter group of Adrianne Gonzalez, Maia Sharp and Garrison Starr will perform at 7:30 p.m., Friday, in Robert W. Rhoades Center, Venango College of Clarion University. Gonzalez is a critically acclaimed singer and songwriter; Sharp's songs have been recorded by The Dixie Chicks and Bonnie Raitt; and Starr has toured with Melissa Etheridge, Sarah McLachlan and Mary Chapin Carpenter. The concert is free.  Venango College of Clarion University will present “Sound of My Voice” (R) at 7 p.m., Saturday, in Robert W. Rhoades Center. East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania

 The new One Book, One Campus Wes Moore Public Readings will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, in Lower Dansbury at East Stroudsburg University. Dr. Patricia Kennedy, associate professor of communication studies, and students from the honors section of her speech communication class will present a reading. The event is free.  The Latino Heritage Month Film Festival at East Stroudsburg University will conclude with ESPN’s The Clemente Effect (2013), directed by Mario Díaz (USA), at 8 p.m., Thursday, in Beers Lecture Hall. The event is free.  Family Weekend at East Stroudsburg University will begin Friday and continue through Sunday. There will be a Classic Car Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, at the front circle of campus. Classic car enthusiasts can expect a great show of collector cars provided by the Monroe County Cruisers. The event is free.  The Tournament of High School Bands at East Stroudsburg University will take place from 4 to 9:30 p.m., Sunday, at Eiler-Martin Stadium. Enjoy the sights and sounds of some of northeastern Pennsylvania’s greatest high school bands. The cost is $15 per person and $10 for senior citizens and children.

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania

 Edinboro University will host an open house from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday. Potential students may visit campus to tour the state-of-the-art labs and other modern facilities and talk with representatives of admissions, graduate studies and more than 20 academic departments.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania

 IUP’’s Six O’ Clock Series will present Men’s Friendship: No Man Can Make The Journey Alone at 6 p.m., today, in Hadley Union Building, Ohio Room. Hank Mandel will discuss the making of his film “Five Friends” and various reactions to its showing, along with hosting a discussion about male relationships. Free admission.  The exhibit Layers, Places in Peril will continue to be on display in the IUP University Museum, Sutton Hall., through Nov. 9. Artist Judith Waller and earth scientist Jim Brey collaborate in illustrations of environmental threats confronting the world's most beautiful cities and landscapes. Admission is free.  IUP’s Lively Arts will present Faculty in Recital: Jason Worzbyt, at 8 p.m., today, in Gorell Recital Hall, Sutton Hall. Free admission.  IUP's Department of Criminology and the IUP Safe Zone Project will sponsor a discussion about hate crimes at 6 p.m., tomorrow, in the Hadley Union Building Ohio Room. Presenters will be Denise Holtz, a special agent for the FBI's Civil Rights Division, and Ted Hoover, coordinator, Persad Center's Community Safe Zone Project. Free admission.  IUP’s Lively Arts will present IUP Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m., Thursday, at Gorrell Recital Hall, Sutton Hall. Free admission.  The Brothers Karamazov will be performed at 8 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, at Waller Hall Studio Theater. Written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and adapted and directed by Matko Srsen, Theater-by-the-Grove will present the sweeping saga of Dostoyevsky's last, epic novel.  The IUP Jazz Ensemble will perform in concert with guest lecturer Ted Buehrer at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, at Gorell Recital Hall, Sutton Hall. Free admission.  IUP’s Lively Arts will present Mnozil Brass at 8 p.m., Friday, at Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center. This Austrian septet combines music with a good dose of absurdist theater. This performance will also feature a one-of-a-kind "brass off" with IUP music students and faculty.  The exhibit "Imago," featuring paintings curated by graduate student Erika Stearly, is on display through Oct. 31 in the Annex Gallery, Sprowls Hall. The exhibition includes several works from the permanent collection of the University Museum by artists Milton Avery, Philip Guston, Chuck Olson, Ned Wert, May White-Dyer and Ruby C. Williams. Admission is free.  IUP will host the second annual Hawk Rock 24-hour dance-athon for charity starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. Entirely directed by students through the IUP Office of Service Learning and Center for Career Development, the Hawk Rock will raise funds for three local charities addressing homelessness and hunger in Indiana County.
