Parks & Recreation

Highlights

Approximately 25 acres of new park is to be acquired in the Burquitlam- Lougheed area over the next 30 years based on expected growth.

The exact amount and location of parkland will vary, and is dependent on many factors related to property acquisition, land development, funding availability, and public consultation. The specific amenities in each park will be established at a later point through a public decision process for each park.

The City looks for opportunities to get additional park benefits through development to supplement the public park system, including:

• public amenities on private lands, • discretionary financial contributions towards park amenities, or • development of City parks by private developers.

YMCA and other Services

Community Recreation Services will be provided through a new community recreation facility in partnership with the YMCA and through partnerships such as the Neighbourhood Learning Centre being planned at Banting Middle School.

Other community services, such as library and cultural programming, will continue to be evaluated over time to ensure that they meet the needs of the growing community.

Potential Watercourse Development Permit Area

The BLNP area contains important stream corridors which provide the opportunity to improve water quality and fish habitat, and provide an important stormwater control function.

The proposed Watercourse Protection Development Permit Area would review all development activities within 30 metres of a watercourse, following guidelines in the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Coquitlam Zoning Bylaw’s Riparian Area Regulations (RAR) .
