Important information to consider when arranging a wedding abroad:

• Civil weddings : Spanish law requires that either the bride or groom has to be registered as a Spanish resident for at least two years prior to the wedding, or owns property in Spain. Divorcees can apply for a civil wedding as can widowed partners. • Religious weddings : All paper work for religious weddings is prepared in the UK and neither partner needs to be a Spanish resident. For catholic weddings either the bride or groom must be catholic and neither partner can be divorced. It is possible to marry through other churches in Spain but couples must comply with the civil requirements and should normally be a member of the local church. • Marriage blessings : For most UK residents, those who are not catholic nor own property in Spain, it will be necessary to have either a civil wedding in the UK or in Gibraltar which can then be followed by a marriage blessing in Spain.

This information is correct at time of printing but please check with the local authorities before proceeding with your wedding plans. (July 2009)

Keytel International can put you in contact with the relevant authorities to register and arrange weddings and marriage blessings.

Very close by are the royal Mudéjar palace known as the Alcazar with marvellous gardens and the Santa Cruz quarter, with streets filled with flowered balconies, richly decorated façades and hidden patios. 35 Parador de Santo Estevo

4-star ancient monastery Nearest airport: Santiago de Compostela (115km)

This stunning Parador, near the town of Ourense and approximately equidistant from Santiago and Vigo, is in a former Benedictine monastery, one of the oldest in Galicia, tracing its origins to the 6th century and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1923. The monastery buildings stand on a wooded hillside, with magnificent views out over the surrounding landscape, an area known as the Ribeira Sacra where the River Sil joins the River Minho to form the border with Portugal. The carefully restored and preserved buildings have Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements, and notable features include a monumental staircase and three cloisters, one in each of the aforementioned styles. Several of the bedrooms have fine views down to the River Sil, and the bar is situated in one of the cloisters. The courtyard has impressive arches and a glass fronted building, allowing for lots of light. A perfect photo opportunity would be under the trees, with the blossom falling and the quaint arches in the background. The terrace area near the chestnut forest boasts a restaurant where an evening reception could be held and the party could dine alfresco, taking in the wonderful scenery. The new state of the art spa offering a full range of facilities and treatments, which has recently opened in the Parador, allows visitors to enjoy 21 st century luxuries in 10 th century surroundings, and would be the perfect opportunity for pre- wedding pampering. The Abad Franquila room would be an ideal place to start a honeymoon. It is a beautiful room combining modernity and traditional features such as seats carved into the wall beneath the window overlooking the woods and the mountains. It also has its own Jacuzzi in the spacious bathroom.
