    D. SHARPLEY 1 /133 Black Discourses in North Carolina, 1890-1902: How North Carolina’s Black Politicians and Press Narrated and Influenced the Tumultuous Era of Fusion Politics By Dannette Sharpley A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors Department of History, Duke University Under the advisement of Dr. Nancy MacLean April 13, 2018 D. SHARPLEY 2 /133 Acknowledgements I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to write an Honors Thesis in the History Department. When I returned to school after many years of separation, I was prepared for challenging work. I expected to be pushed intellectually and emotionally. I expected to struggle through all-nighters, moments of self-doubt, and even academic setbacks. I did not, however, imagine that I could feel so passionate or excited about what I learned in class. I didn’t expect to even undertake such a large project, let alone arrive at the finish line. And I didn’t imagine the sense of accomplishment at having completed something that I feel is meaningful beyond my own individual education. The process of writing this thesis has been all those things and more. I would first like to thank everyone at the History Department who supports this Honors Distinction program, because this amazing process would not be possible without your work. Thank you very much to Dr. Nancy MacLean for advising me on this project. It was in Professor MacLean’s History of Modern Social Movements class that I became obsessed with North Carolina’s role in the Populist movement of the nineteenth, thus beginning this journey.

  • Three Centuries of Southern Poetry
THREE CENTURIES OF Southern Poetry (1607-1907) CARL HOLLIDAY, M.A. Professor of English Literature, Cox College, Atlanta. Author of A History of Southern Literature^ The Cotton- Picker and Other Poems, Etc. Nashville, Tenn.; Dallas, Tex. Publishing House of the M. E. Church, South Smith & Lamar, Agents Copyright, 1908, BY Smith & Lamar. "hat most pleasant of men lnd most zealous of teachers, ir. (Eljarbfi HiUimn KfttJ PREFACE. Within the last decade the interest in Southern literature has become widespread. Nearly every Southern college and university now offers a course in the subject, and the summer schools and Chautauquas frequently make it a special feature. All this is as it should be. There nre Southern writers scarce- ly known by name to-day who are deserving of careful atten- tion. Especially is this true among the Southern poets, who, amidst prosperity and adversity, have sung songs of gladness and of sorrow that stand among the finest productions in American literature. How few of them are intimately, lov- ingly known at the present day! This collection is made in the hope that still further in- terest may be aroused. Other collections have been made, but they have dealt almost entirely with the poets living in the first sixty years of the nineteenth century. In the present compilation specimens are given from three centuries of Southern verse—from 1607 to 1907. Because of this fact the book, it is hoped, will be of interest not only to students of literature, but also to students of history and to lovers of the old and curious in general.

Department of Scottish Literature School of Critical Studies University of Glasgow January 2016 © Arun Sood 2016 Abstract This thesis represents the first extensive critical study of the relationship between Robert Burns (1759-1796) and the early United States of America. Spanning literature, history and memory studies, the following chapters take an interdisciplinary approach towards investigating the methods by which Burns and his works rose to prominence and came to be of cultural and literary significance in America. Theoretically, these converging disciplines intersect through a transnational, Atlantic Studies perspective that shifts emphasis from Burns as the ‘national poet of Scotland’ onto the various socio-cultural connections that facilitated the spread of his work and reputation.
