Preface

I am pleased to provide the 2008/2009 edition of the Columbia Union College Facts and Figures. This Fact Book has been published annually since 1991, and provides tables and graphs of current and historical important institutional statistics and data. Its purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference tool for members of the college community.

This edition reflects several intentional changes in format and content representative of a shift towards tracking the college’s Key Performance Indicators. Several original reports remain, however. In the case of these reports that have been grandfathered into this document, significant efforts have been made to preserve historic comparisons and trends.

Many individuals have supplied suggestions, content, and data for this publication. The final section of the Fact Book lists some of these individuals and their contributions. In addition to these, special recognition and thanks are given to Jon Peter (Class of 2010, Business Administration – Management), for compilation and presentation of many of the statistics in this document. This community effort would not be successful without the contribution of these participants, and this assistance is greatly appreciated.

Janette Neufville Director, Institutional Research Columbia Union College

Profile

History/Location: Columbia Union College was established in 1904 as a coeducational institution known as the Washington Training Institute. Its purpose was to train young men and women in the liberal arts. In 1907, when the name was changed to Washington Foreign Mission Seminary, the more limited objective of special training for missionaries replaced the original concept of a liberal arts college. Again in 1914, the college resumed the status of a liberal arts college and took the name Washington Missionary College. At the first commencement, held in 1915, five students received the Bachelor of Arts degree. Continued growth and development led to further changes. In 1933 the lower biennium was organized as Columbia Junior College and received accreditation as a four-year, degree-granting institution by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In March of 1961, the college constituency voted to change the name of the college to Columbia Union College. The college subsequently sought and was approved for a name change to Washington Adventist University in the spring of 2009, effective July1, 2009, along with the status change to a university.

Academic Programs: Columbia Union College now offers 6 master’s degree, 69 baccalaureate degrees, 6 associate degrees, 3 certificate programs, and 40 minors. Additional pre-professional curricula are available to students seeking admission to professional schools. Curricula are available for full-time and part-time day students (traditional), accelerated evening format (School of Graduate and Professional Studies—SGPS), and distance learning (External Degree). A complete list of programs is found on the following page.

Faculty: In 2008, there are 49 full-time teaching faculty, of whom 26 hold a doctoral degree.

Enrollment: The Traditional student count for Fall ’08 is at 661. The overall headcount is 994.

Admissions: In the Traditional program there are 98 first-year students and 62 transfer students.

Costs: Full-time tuition for the 2008-2009 academic year is $18,200 plus fees of $1,680. Books and supplies are estimated at $1,100. Room and board costs are $6,887.

Accreditation: Columbia Union College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104, 215-662-5606; the Adventist Accrediting Association (AAA) of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists; and approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. Professional accreditations include the Department of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs of the National League for Nursing, Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, and the Maryland State Department of Education.

Library Facilities and Resources

The Weis Library occupies a Georgian-style brick building which was completed in 1942 and has approximately 16,000 gross square feet of space. Architectural features include a marbled grand entry hall, a monumental reference room, four levels of book stacks, and a classic wood-paneled room which was originally used as a faculty reading room but has been converted to a second Heritage Room.

Columbia Union College is a member of the Maryland Interlibrary Consortium (MIC), together with the libraries of five other independent institutions: College of Notre Dame of Maryland and Loyola College in Maryland, which are located in Baltimore and share a library; Hood College in Frederick; Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg; and Villa Julie College in Stevenson. The consortium uses the ExLibris/Endeavor Voyager System to support a shared Web-based public catalog and other functions, such as cataloging, circulation, acquisitions, serials, and database management. MIC also provides selected electronic databases and a Monday-through-Friday courier service for pickup and delivery of materials requested by consortium borrowers.

The library utilizes the services of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center, Inc.). In addition, Weis Library provides Web access to many other electronic resources. The library is one of the founding members of the Adventist Library Information Cooperative (ALICE), which presently includes 17 Seventh-day Adventist college and university libraries, several of which are located outside of the . ALICE was formed to provide online access at reduced cost to multiple periodical indexes, most of which have full text. The library also has access to many of the electronic databases in the Maryland Digital Library (MDL), a library initiative that provides Maryland’s institutions of higher education with Web access to selected electronic resources. The library is a member of OCLC CAPCON, a Washington-based OCLC service center which provides access to databases and training opportunities. Through ALICE, MDL, MIC, OCLC CAPCON, and direct subscription/purchase, Weis Library makes dozens of on-line databases available; and the library home page provides links to a wide range of additional resources. Ten computers are available in the library for patrons to use for research purposes. A proxy-server makes remote access to the licensed Web-based resources possible.

There are two special collections in the Weis Library. The Heritage Rooms contain books, periodicals, and memorabilia associated with Seventh-day Adventists (SDA), a small rare book collection, and a card index to SDA periodicals created under the direction of Theofield G. Weis, Librarian of the college for nearly forty years until he retired in 1967. This index is considered to be so important for research that the SDA General Conference Archives underwrote microfilming it so that it could be made available to other libraries and to all of the E.G. White Research Centers around the world. The Curriculum collection supports the teacher education program with such materials as textbooks, curriculum guides, resource units, children’s literature, learning games, computer software, etc.

Facts: General Information Columbia Union College CUC FACTS AND FIGURES 2008-09 4

The library is staffed by three full-time professional librarians, three paraprofessionals (2.4 FTE), and 10-14 student library assistants.

Library statistics have not been made available for publication.
