Only three of the 35 players who lettered last fall will be lost via graduation. Subtract another five who are doubtful because of grades and Jerry Lyons can look for some 27 returning lettermen in Sep tem ber. Offensive and defensive lines from tackle to tackle look the strong est from this early vantage point. The Viks could be three deep in tested material in each position. Quarterbacking also should be firm with 6-4 Ed Gorman and speedy Danny Withers returning. Biggest question marks will be at offensive end and in the defen sive secondary. These positions posed mark problems last year and could bring more headaches in 1966.

Weber State has good talent returning and if redshirts and transfers come through, the Wildcats should be in the thick of the conference race again. However, a tougher schedule and the fact that opponents will be better prepared in 1966, will challenge the Big Sky co-champs to repeat their fine 1965 record. Top players are Henry Owens at tailback, Lee White at fullback, and Bruce Handley at guard. These three boys are bonafide All- American prospects and it’s possible that a few other players will press these three for local and national honors. Outstanding sophomores are Bill Rodgers and Barry Kelly from the Marines, and Fred Morawzynski up from the frosh. The chase for the crown will be further chal lenged by the fact that three out of four conference games will be played away from home. Idaho, Montana, and Montana State are all gunning for the Wildcats in their own ballyards. Montana was the only club to defeat Weber State last year, and the Cats biggest vic tory was their 14-7 win over the . A breakdown of personnel for 1966 includes 28 returning lettermen, 10 junior college transfers, four redshirts and six boys up from the freshman team.

A new era in University of the Pacific football history is under way, and the process of rebuilding lies in the able hands of new Tiger coach Doug Scovil. Scovil, in his first year, will have to take a team that in the last three seasons has managed only four wins against som e 25 defeats. The young and inexperienced Tigers of 1965 were able to win only one game while losing eight. This season all but seven of those per formers return along with a good-sized group of proven junior col lege transfers. This being Scovil’s first year, it is not yet certain as to the exact system of play he will use. However, it will more than likely be on the order of a Pro-Type “T.” The Tigers plan to employ the running game to a much greater extent this season. Last season Pacific was a passing team, with hardly any running attack at all. This year it is hoped that we will be able to use a well-rounded balanced attack. The Tigers were most vulnerable last season in the position of defensive back. This year we have a number of junior college trans fers to fill that spot.

A new coaching staff, new offense and many new players feature the 1966 football look at Idaho State University, which last season shared with Montana State the cellar position in the Big Sky Athletic Conference. Italo (Babe) Caccia, Idaho State’s grid coach for the past 14 years, stepped out to become assistant athletic director at the close of the 1965 season. The new Bengal mentor is Leo McKillip, former Caccia assistant. McKillip has installed a new pro-type offense and hopes to diversify the entire ISU attack this fall. “We’ll operate with flanker backs, split ends and try to go with a wide open attack,” says McKillip, who inherits 23 returning letter men from last year’s 3-5-1 squad.

Outlook for the 1966 Northern Arizona University Lumberjack football team has its bright spots, but then again, Coach Andy Mac Donald is concerned with the lack of depth facing his squad this fall. On the bright side, MacDonald says, “We’re 100 per cent better than last season,” but then the outlook becomes cloudy as he sums up the schedule for this fall. “We’ve got a tiger by the tail, with no less than seven major colleges to go up against,” he explains. “It’s probably the toughest schedule we have ever had, and there aren’t any ‘breathers’ in it,” he adds. Among the major foes of the Lumberjacks this fall are Weber State, Fresno State, Idaho State University, Long Beach State, San Diego State, the University of Montana, and West Texas State. At least 38 players from the spring squad are expected to report for the opening of fall drills August 26, with 17 returning lettermen. MacDonald says a number of select freshmen will also report on opening day.

“We’re taking a wait-and-see attitude,” says Coach Jim Sweeney, whose Bobcats suffered through a losing season in 1965, just a year after winning the Camellia Bowl for college division supremacy of 11 western states. “The Bobcats got off to a great start in ’65, beating South Dakota State and Wichita State. But the win over Wichita was costly. The three top runners were banged up. One, Ben Vaughn, missed most of the year because of a broken jaw. Montana State recovered to win just one more game, a satisfying 24-6 decision over Montana. On the spring roster were 22 lettermen, six junior college transfers and about 20 good sophomore prospects, so the Bobcats should be stronger at every position than they were in ’65. Just how much stronger they’ll be, however, is the big question. Another difficult schedule could keep the Bobcats from climbing above .500 in ’66. Tulsa and Idaho loom big on a schedule that in cludes four college division teams that ranked among the nation’s best last year—small college champ North Dakota State, North Da kota, Fresno State and Weber State.

With the shadow of four near misses in five losses hovering over head the 1966 will be a team out for revenge this fall in a slate that contains nine rematches from the ’65 schedule. The reason that the shadow hangs so close is that this is essentially the same club that wore the Silver and Gold in ’65. It’s a team with a real All-American at deep (full) back in Ray McDonald, a fine option quarterback in John Foruria and a trio of pro draft picks in the defensive line. Put with these factors a group of eager rookies who had spring practice all to themselves as the veterans mended from off-season surgery. The rookies looked tough and a veteran or two may find himself in a new position (or on the bench) when they kick off in on Sept. 17. Names like Dotson, Davidson and Murrell may replace Lavens, McCollum and Toney in the Idaho offensive scheme of things this fall, but they will all be in supporting roles to Mc Donald, the record wrecker from Caldwell who packed the ball 213 times for 1,000 yards and 90 points last fall.
