In just a few years at the start of the 20th century, Britain changed in unimaginable ways. From the first foray into aviation, to the invention of labour-saving devices for the home, to the rise of “the brand”, and the birth of not only “the High Street”, but also of the “commuter class”, mass consumerism and tabloid journalism, the Edwardians lived lives not too distant from our own. This new BBC Four season investigates, interrogates and celebrates the richness and excitement of this pioneering and world-changing time. 01 bbc_four_Autmun_2006.qxd:Layout 1 16/1/07 10:42 Page 5 The season includes some of the era’s best-known names, from literary giants such as George and Weedon Grossmith and Saki, to the doyenne of the music hall, Marie Lloyd. Along the way, it also uncovers lesser-known figures. It hears about trailblazers in the fields of social reform, journalism, photography, entrepreneurship and technical invention, uncovering what it really felt like to be Edwardian. Dramas The season launches with Andrew Davies’s brilliant, two-part adaptation of the classic comedy novel The Diary Of A In a compelling drama about the life of one of the biggest stars Nobody, starring Hugh Bonneville as the wonderfully of the time, Marie Lloyd – starring Jessie Wallace as Marie – pompous diarist Mr Charles Pooter – the Victor Meldrew of the season exposes the seedy underbelly of this peculiarly his day – Edwardian entertainment.

  • Murder on the Orient Express: a Return Ticket Wieland Schwanebeck
This is an accepted manuscript version of an article published in Adaptation 11.1 (2018) https://doi.org/10.1093/adaptation/apx025 Film Review: Murder on the Orient Express: A Return Ticket Wieland Schwanebeck Murder on the Orient Express. Dir. Kenneth Branagh. Perf. Kenneth Branagh, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp. Fox, 2017. In the first scene of Kenneth Branagh’s big-screen adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express (1934)—one of Agatha Christie’s three most popular novels, according to a 2015 poll (Flood)—famous Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot plagues the staff members of a Jerusalem hotel with his unusual request for two eggs of identical size. He goes so far as to apply a ruler to his breakfast, only to conclude that it does not meet his requirements. The scene serves as a neat summary of the character that will likely sit well with hardcore Christie admirers—the author famously had Captain Hastings characterize Poirot as a man so meticulous that ‘a speck of dust would have caused him more pain than a bullet wound’ (1920/2007: 14)—and the shot of Branagh (the film’s star as well as its director) cowering behind his breakfast table and scrutinizing the eggs sets up Murder on the Orient Express as an adaptation that literally goes ab ovo. It invokes the initial description of the character in Christie’s debut novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (‘His head was exactly the shape of an egg’, 1920/2007: 14), and at the same time it is indicative of how the film reboots Christie for the twenty-first century, playing up Poirot’s tics while also humanizing him, an adaptive policy that has worked wonders for Sherlock Holmes.

  • Above Suspicion: the Red Dahlia
1 ABOVE SUSPICION: THE RED DAHLIA Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia DC Anna Travis (Kelly Reilly) is back, reunited with the inimitable DCI James Langton (Ciarán Hinds), to face her most challenging and terrifying case yet. When the body of a young woman is discovered by the Thames, sadistically mutilated and drained of blood, it would seem an ominous re-enactment of the infamously unsolved murder, from 1940s Los Angeles, dubbed The Black Dahlia. The three part drama, Above Suspicion: The Red Dahlia, is adapted by Lynda La Plante from her successful second novel about rookie detective, Anna Travis. It is produced by La Plante Productions for ITV1. Kelly Reilly (He Kills Coppers, Joe’s Palace, Eden Lake, Mrs Henderson Presents) returns to the role of Anna Travis. Acclaimed actor Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood, Margot at the Wedding, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Prime Suspect) stars as her boss, the volatile Detective Chief Inspector James Langton. They are joined by Shaun Dingwall as Detective Inspector Mike Lewis, Celyn Jones (First, Joe’s Palace, Grange Hill) as Detective Sergeant Paul Barolli, Michelle Holmes (Red Riding: 1980, The Chase, Merseybeat) as Detective Constable Barbara Maddox and Amanda Lawrence (Little Dorrit, Clone) as Detective Constable Joan Faukland. Guest stars in the new series include Simon Williams (Spooks, Sense and Sensibility), Sylvia Syms (Collision, The Queen), Holliday Grainger (Merlin, Demons), Edward Bennett (After You’re Gone, Silent Witness) and Hannah Murray (In Bruges, Skins) Director of Drama Laura Mackie says: “Above Suspicion was one of the highlights of the Winter Season on ITV1 and I’m delighted that Lynda is bringing Anna Travis back for another gripping investigation”.
