Inside One Nation (Limited) A brutally honest expose on what happened behind the scenes at One Nation and why it collapsed . The book is written by the party’s Internet webmaster, Scott Balson, who had a unique insight into what went on during the turbulent years and just what drove Ms Hanson’s supporters. This book is written in the public interest. The Hanson Phenomenon is not about Pauline Hanson. It is about a desperate population grasping at a political alternative and being deceived- Scott Balson First edition: published by Interactive Presentations Pty Ltd in October 2000. Bruce Whiteside, “Destiny Aborted” . The tragedy for every member of One Nation is that they were never members of the political party. They were nothing more than fund raisers for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Limited. Champions Magazine Pty Ltd, Ettridge’s company, was the major financial beneficiary of their labours. Scott Balson, “Inside One Nation” The media not only distorted the truth and told lies they never bothered to look at just what happened to One Nation or how it was destroyed. The standard of journalism in Australia is worse than pathetic it’s a disgrace. Scott Balson, “Inside One Nation” Ettridge, “I have left the party in good shape” and “We are all like minded. We want to save Australia” and “Everyone has an axe to grind” David Oldfield, “I have no relationship with the Queensland party in any shape or form” and “Tony Abbott is right of Genghis Khan” and that “Abbott only used the Liberal Party as a vehicle for his own political ambitions – not really believing in their policies.” Pauline Hanson 7 th January 2000 “By doing this (establishing the City Country Alliance) they destroyed what we have been working so hard for - to bring accountability to politics” John Elliott to Bruce Whiteside, December 1996, “You understand that this means the decimation of the Australian Democrats” Tom King, February 1999, “Pauline has got to be convinced that as the one who ignited the fuse, she must live up to the standards she illustrated that made her so appealing to us and a large slice of Australia. Pauline may think she created the movement, not so, it was there all the time” Alan Doak after resigning in June 2000, “.. (Ms Hanson) is a lunatic. She is trying to destroy One Nation and so far is doing a good job” and to Balson, “Ms Hanson knew what was going on in Manly all along” ii Inside One Nation ( Limited) Mrs Heather Hill comments on “Inside One Nation” This book has provided me with more pieces of the jig saw puzzle that was Pauline Hanson’s One Nation (PHON). The emerging picture confirms that PHON was never a political party but merely a “fan club” . Many Australian people have developed a deep distrust of the current two party political system. Politicians on both sides have forced severe changes on Australians in the name of economic rationalism. Multinationals pay little or no tax while Australian workers carry an ever-increasing burden. Australians have lost control of their country which has led to the emergence of the Working Class Poor , a vast number of disaffected Australians desperately looking for a better way. People will tolerate many flaws in an organisation that promises to stand up and represent them and not big business or back room party mates. However like thousands of others I was betrayed and finally ashamed of the lack of accountability and transparency in PHON, whilst in the same breath we demanded it from government bureaucracies. The media along with the academic elite believed people would laugh along with them at Pauline. They disregarded the deep-seated distrust of politicians and how their actions had impacted on family values and lifestyles. In fanning the fire of Pauline Hanson they created an opportunity for all Australians to break the current political system and seek true representation. Sadly, Pauline betrayed this heavy responsibility. The irony is that while Pauline displayed immense courage in publicly taking on the media and other politicians, this contrasted starkly with her lack of courage to allow a democratic process within PHON. She lacked the confidence to rise to leadership without absolute control. This personal failure was a major reason for the movement failing. It was the people’s movement created around Pauline and their efforts to develop organisational structures that realised members into Parliament. It was this synergy of ideals that created electoral success. The figurehead “Pauline” had the ability to grab media attention on issues previously silenced by the politically correct. But as Pauline become a Star - a tyrant emerged, a person who frequently chucked tantrums, resigned and threatened to destroy people personally and politically before she ousted them from HER party. Always without any opportunity for them to please explain! As this book portrays, Pauline forgot that great leaders must lead not control. iii Inside One Nation ( Limited) Preface This book gives a unique insight into the inner workings of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation. The contribution of many of the key players has been invaluable, Bruce Whiteside, David Ettridge, David Oldfield, Pauline Hanson, Paul Trewartha, Heather Hill, Lindon Litchfield, John Pasquarelli, Alan Doak, Terry Sharples 1, Ian Petersen, Robyn Spencer, John Clodd, Tony Pitt, Peter MacKay, Graham McDonald, Joan Gordon, Brett Hocking, JG Estiot, Selwyn Johnson and the Queensland MPs. It is indeed a tragedy that • this “people’s party” wasn’t; • in most cases the “white ants” weren’t; • a party calling for accountability in government wasn’t; • a leadership demanding the right of freedom of speech did not extend that right to its membership; • a political lightweight, Ms Hanson, was snared by two street-smart operators (Oldfield and Ettridge) – the victim being the cause; and • a largely blind support base accepted everything that they were told by the leadership. The manner in which they were misled by this leadership is an appalling example of hypocrisy and deception unequalled in its scale in Australian political history. If there is one thing to be learned from this book it is the simple message that democracy is currently a fallacy in Australia – just as it was a fallacy in One Nation. Any new “people’s movement” will have to be structured on a totally open and accountable leadership which must, through necessity, be changed on a regular basis. The battle has not been lost, the battle has just begun – and One Nation, if nothing else, played a major role in alerting the Australian people to the fact that they can make a difference if they take a stand.
