Compelling and perfect for anyone working in healthcareBy Temporary User NameThe first portion of the book contains diagnostic criteria for several diseases, how to perform the mental status exam and how to evaluate the results. The end of the book contains handouts you can give patients in the waiting room for self-evaluation and a way to score them. What is sandwiched in between is truly great. Each clinical vignette is very compelling and intensely interesting. At the end of each vignette, you can quiz yourself on the diagnosis and then confirm the answer. What proceeds from there is the DSM criteria for the diagnosis in bold, followed by the parts of the vignette that confirm or deny the presence of each symptom. There is also a brief discussion of the disease, the treatment concerns, differential diagnosis and a note on how the actual patient was handled. Even the laziest medical student can finish this book in 2 days during rotations. If you deal with conscious patients, you will have many patients with psychiatric disorders. This book is far too cheap, easy to read and valuable to pass up.13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A good readBy N. FlemingI used this with my interns to get them to think more clinically about situations. They absolutely loved it. It was great to see them not only working through the situations, but also questioning the logic behind the diagnoses and where they may have gone wrong with their own diagnosing skills. It is slightly wordy at points, but overall it's pretty good.121 of 122 people found the following review helpful. Don't buy the Kindle version get paper.By CharlesI bought this on my Kindle I like the book but would not buy it in this format again, reasons to follow. First I would say the book has excellent content is well written and accessible for both novice and more experienced practitioner. I am a degree nurse with 3.5 years of forensic psych recently moved to an ED job where we act as a consulting service to the ER Docs and make recommendations for admission or D/C. Specifically I like the case study and framework used in the book I find it is helpful in interviewing and working out differentials both medical/organic and psychiatric. However, the one issue I have with the book is the kindle format. The Kindle version has no index, and no text links, so you are unable to review the content of the book or to jump to another section of the book or print out any forms for that are only available in the paper copy. This is a significant shortcoming of this book's formatting for the electronic version for that reason I would again only buy this as a paper edition and forget it on the kindle unless they update the book to provide useful access.
