Independence Markers Mormon Walking Trail This project is in full production now. Fourteen (14) bronze markers will be installed this year in Independence sidewalks to mark places along a walking tour of Mormon sites. MMFF, with the help of some wonderful friends, and in cooperation with the city of Independence is making this dream turn into a reality. We owe a big public thank you for lots of work by city staff to Bruce Hahl, Kathy Bennett and Mary Ottman. You may participate by contributing to the cost of installation. You may choose a site and contribute the entire cost (approximately $100). Some token of appreciation for such donations will be given those donors. Smaller donations will also be happily accepted. Watch for some special events in connection with the coming of these markers.

The 14 sites in walking order are: 1) Temple Lot Joseph Smith dedicated this site for a Temple in 1831. 2) Flournoy House Original home for Temple Lot where Joseph Smith dined with the Moses Wilson family; open for tours. 3) Brick church &school Where Joseph Smith preached. 4) Floumoy House Lo[ Original house site for the Temple Lot land. 5) Rathbun property Rathbun was a Mormon blacksmith. 6) Gilbert &Whitney store On the square, 100 North Liberty (being restored) 7) Square Courthouse Scene of mob action. 8) The Evening and the Morning Star printing house, 110 South Liberty. 9) Log Courthouse Algemon Sydney Gilbert's home and store (log part); open for tours 10) Log Courthouse Site Algemon Sydney Gilbert's home and store, original site; (parking lot) 11) Lilbum Boggs first home Peter Whitmer Jr. lived here with Boggs, North side of Maple Street, just off the square. 12) Noland House (hotel) 1838 leaders imprisoned here; (Clinton Drug Store on site now) 13) First Jackson County Jail Church leaders kept here in 1833; 2nd jail on same lot was were Orrin was kept.
