Jerusalem B’ne Bezalel 1925 [14893] Folio, 40cm, Decorative folio with text book in English and Hebrew, 36 + 28 pp plus 40 black and white plates, each of which has an English and Hebrew translation. The folio has an autobiography of the Jewish artist and sculptor Boris Schatz (1867 – 1932), founder of the Betzalel School of Art and one of the most important influences on Jewish art in Palestine. In this bilingual monograph, he relates his works to his life and ideals. The work is prefaced by historian Joseph Klausner and the text pages also feature some illustrations and text decoration. The text is in an orange softcover booklet, placed along with the plates. Slight wear to slipcase, tiny bit of foxing to text booklet, overall very good condition. £450

A poem in Hebrew by the writer and poet, Zalman Schneur (1887- 1959). Illustrated by Hermann Struck (1876 - 1944), a Jewish artist most noted for his etchings. The poem was actually written in 1917 and the drawings were made by Struck in Vilna during the First World War. The poet and artist worked independently. This is Number 59 out of a limited edition of 1,700 copies. The illustrations are in 3 colours. A bit of wear to cloth, a little piece is worn away on the back board. Previous owner’s stamp on title page. A little bit of foxing and rear hinge is shaken. £175

A Prayer for Protection Against Cholera in 19th Century Italy. First edition. Blue plain wrappers, 8vo. Text in Hebrew and Italian. 14 pp Some wear. Includes a prayer compiled by Sabbato Graziadio Treves against the cholera epidemic of 1836. It concludes with the prayer Avinu Malkenu. Cholera was a major problem in the 19 th century and there are a number of these orders of service, including several English ones. £175

London, Jewish National Fund, [c 1940] [5127] 26cm, 4 pp, some soiling, a little tearing at fore-edge but with no loss of text. No copies are listed on COPAC and Worldcat lists one microform copy at the NYPL. A rare ephemeral item. The publication of the infamous “White Paper on Palestine” caused a furor amongst the Jewish and Zionist community who felt Britain was betraying the terms of the Palestine Mandate. There were a number of pamphlets and statements by Jewish organisations criticising the the ‘White Paper’. This pamphlet contains Mr Ussishkin’s message on the subject. The first issue of the Iton Rishmi – The Official Journal published on the first day of the State of Israel contains a clause annulling the ‘White Paper.’ £95

States on the verso of the title page - This edition is an abridged version of the original memorandum to the Anglo-American Committee of Enquiry. The Anglo Committee of Enquiry was appointed in 1945 and started hearings of evidence in January 1946. It was set up to explore the Palestine issue and the condition of the Jews still left in Europe. Numerous individuals gave evidence and many organizations submitted reports and memoranda to the committee. This is the memorandum submitted by the Histadruth. £75

Original wrappers, cover title, 18cm, 7 pp, a little soiling to top left corner of front wrapper, but overall very good condition. James Grover McDonald served for 2 years as the League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and resigned in 1936 in protest against the failure of the world to take proper action. This is an impassioned plea for action with several suggestion both short and long term to save as many Jews as possible from the Nazis and resettle them in the longer term. Palestine is key but he also explores the possibilities of the uninhabited parts of North Western and parts of Africa. £75

14. Waters, M. P. - Mufti over the Middle East. London, H. Barber 1942 [6858]

Original wrappers, 22cm, 36 pp, very good condition. There is a striking graphic on the front wrapper. Inside there is a photograph of the Mufti meeting Hitler at the Reich Chancellery in Berlin in 1941. M P Waters was a pseudonym for Moshe Pearlman. This pamphlet focuses on the damaging impact of the Mufti and his active support of the Nazi regime. It also discusses at length Arab critiscism of the Mufti, most notably that by Fakri Bey Nashashibi. The Mufti intimidated and organised the murder of Arabs who did not support him. This was Sir Leon Simon’s copy. Sir Leon Simon was an active Zionist, a member of the Palestine Commission in 1918 and the Palestine Education Commission in 1945. He translated the Balfour Declaration into Hebrew and was a protégé of Weizmann and Ahad Haam. £150

Richard Howard Stafford Crossman OBE (15 Dec 1907- 5 April 1974) was a British author and Labour Party politician. Secretary of State for Social Services, Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons under Harold Wilson. He resigned after Labour's election defeat in 1970 from the Labour front-bench to be editor of the New Statesman. A prominent socialist intellectual, he became one of the Labour Party's leading Zionists and anti-communists. Crossman is noted for his colourful, if highly subjective three-volume Diaries of a Cabinet Minister, which are an acknowledged source for the popular television series, 'Yes, Minister.' £30

38. Kagan, Mark. - Hitlerism Cannot Win. Taunton, Somerset, Goodman and Son, circa 1930s. [8082] Original wrappers, 18.5cm, 15 pp, very good condition. There appear to be no copies on Worldcat or Copac. Mark Kagan (1885-1987) was born in Riga. There were three synagogues in Riga, all served by one rabbi, Kagan's father. He received both a religious and secular education. Kagan attended school in Bremen for two years where he met a German pastor with whom he conversed about Jesus as a Jew. In 1902 Kagan moved to London and met the pastor there again, through whom Kagan converted to Christianity. He became a missionary to the Jews. He contributed to the Yiddish newspaper, "Shepherd of Israel." In addition to magazine articles, Kagan published booklets including "Palestine and the Jew today in the Light of Scripture," "The Certainty and Nearness of Christ's Coming," "The Jewish Passover: How is it Kept Today?" "God and the World Crisis" and "British Israelism Examined by an Israelite." £60

Amery (1873-1955) was a Conservative politician and journalist. Born in India, he attended Balliol College, Oxford. He was First Lord of the Admiralty (1922-1924), Secretary of State for the Colonies (1924-1929) and Secretary of State for India and Burma (1940-1945). He helped draft the Balfour Declaration (1917). He also encouraged Jabotinsky in the formation of the Jewish Legion of the British Army. This pamphlet discusses Germany's interest in joining the League of Nations. £45

Kaczerginski was a Yiddish writer and cultural activist, known mostly for his involvement in the 'Paper Brigade', a group in the Vilnius Ghetto devoted to saving collections of YIVO. Kaczerginski was involved in communist groups for which he served a term in Polish prison before the war. His song 'Barikadn' ('Barricades'), written as a teenager became extremaly popular. During the Soviet occupation of Vilnius, he became disillusioned with Communism. 'Between the Hammer and the Sickle' describes his experiences under the Soviet power. £75

Includes article about anti-semitism and German culture by Richard Horlacher. Published by Abwehrblätter, a journal published between 1891 and 1933 devoted to fighting against anti- Semitism. £75

The booklet lists Nazi attrocities on the Eastern Front and the pamphlet includes pleas from Jews in the Soviet Union. The Committee was formed to "To answer the appeal of Soviet Jewry and promote mutual cultural relations." To achieve this purpose, a Conference of Anglo-Jewish Organisations, Societies and Religious Institutions was held on August 30th, at the People's Palace, London. It was decided how British Jewry, in response to the call by Soviet Jewry, can render material help to our great Russian Ally in addition to the undetakings of the Anglo-Soviet Alliance, and thus perpetuate the Jewish name in the heroic struggle of the Soviet Union £125

Martin Philippson (1846-1916) was Professor of History, first at the University of Bonn, and later at the University of Brussels. He authored several modern historical studies ranging from the Elizabethan Era to the History of the Counter-Reformation. His final years in retirement in Berlin were devoted to Jewish communal work. He headed the Lehranstalt für die Wissenschaft des Judentums, which commissioned his three-volume Neueste Geschichte des Jüdischen Volkes (1907-11).
