Leading an inclusive and aspirational curriculum

Wednesday 26th June 2019, 8.15am – 3.45pm

Lewisham College - Breakspears Hall

Lewisham Learning is running a one day conference in June 2019 to support school leaders and governors to reflect upon their leadership of the curriculum. Given the increased focus on curriculum we have invited speakers with a national reputation for their work and research in this field, as well as schools in Lewisham and Hackney, who are bucking trends, who will share their thoughts and practice.

Our three keynote speakers are:

Christine Counsell

Christine is a renowned and influential curriculum expert. Until December 2018 she was the Director of Education for the Norfolk-based Inspiration Trust. A former Cambridge academic, she was responsible for its renowned secondary PGCE history course. She now sits on Ofsted's curriculum advisory group and is working as a consultant in the field of curriculum leadership.

Becky Allen Becky has spent the past 15 years researching and writing about schools. She is the co-founder and Chief Analyst at Teacher Tapp, the daily survey and CPD tool. share how the school has ensured that progress and attainment of all pupils have improved over the past few years.

Workshop 3 Naheeda Maharasingham, Headteacher of Rathfern Primary School – with 93% of black pupils achieving RWM at expected by the end of KS2, Naheeda will share her thoughts as to why the school clearly bucks the trend.

Workshop 4 Emma Thurston and Sean October, Deputy Head teachers, St Matthew – with outcomes for all pupils significantly improved over time, Emma and Sean will share the strategies the school has used to address the historic under achievement of all pupils but with a focus on what has worked for black pupils.

Workshop 5 Christine Bernard, Headteacher of St Mary’s COE Primary School – Christine has enjoyed teaching in Lewisham for the last 19 years. St Mary's is a one-form Church School, in a pocket of one of the highest socially deprived areas in Lewisham. The school's vision is to be a 'learning community that promotes the unique gifts, wellbeing and potential of every person' and lies at the heart of everything they do. Children, parents and staff describe the School as a 'family'. Strong relationships both within the School and through reaching out to the wider community lie at the heart of the School's ethos. Christine will outlain some of the school’s approaches to reaching out to the community and families as a strategy for raising achievement.
