Team Profile:

The Saint Mary’s Huskies finished the regular season with a 19-1 record and first place and were finalists in the AUS conference championship.

The Huskies scored the most points in the AUS with 1,749 and their 1,440 points against were the fewest allowed all year.

Saint Mary’s shot 44.1% from the field and 32.9 % from three-point land while leading the AUS in free-throw shooting percentage with 75.7%. SMU averaged 41.3 total rebounds per game and topped the AUS with 87.5 points per game. Saint Mary’s averaged 15.1 assists and 6.8 steals per game. The Huskies blocked 3.4 shots per game and allowed 72.0 points per contest.

Senior guard Kemar Alleyne paced the Huskies with 14.6 points per game and was named the 2018-19 AUS men’s most valuable player and a first team all-star. Fellow first team all-star Nico Brauner averaged 12.9 points per contest. Other Huskies scoring in double-digits were Johneil Johnson averaging 12.9 points and Nikita Kasongo 12.6 points per game. Brent Martindale averaged 6.7 points.

In his 7th season, the Huskies head coach Jonah Taussig was named AUS Coach of the Year.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Kemar Alleyne

Kemar Alleyne, a senior guard and commerce student from Toronto, Alleyne led the Huskies to a 19-1 regular season record, a first-place finish in the AUS regular season standings, and a first- round playoff bye through to Saturday night’s semifinals.

He averaged 14.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game for the Huskies this season. His three-point percentage of 42.7% was the second best in the conference.

Over the course of his five years with Saint Mary’s, Alleyne amassed 1,230 career points, 440 rebounds, 199 assists and 113 steals.

In addition to being named conference MVP, he was also named an AUS first team all-star today for the second consecutive season. Alleyne was also named to the AUS all-rookie team in his inaugural season in 2014-15.

The last Atlantic conference player to win the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy was William Njoku 3 of the Saint Mary's Huskies in 1992-93.

Head Coach

Jonah Taussig is in his 7th year as head coach for the men’s team. Taussig has led his team to two back to back conference championship final games. Jonah was an assistant coach for the team for eight years and prior to that he was a player for the Huskies.

Taussig brings an impressive array of skills and experience to the Huskies. As a player he won the AUS basketball rookie of the year in 1997, was a two-time CIS All Canadian and three-time Saint Mary’s Male Athlete of the year. In 1999 Taussig was named the AUS Championship MVP, was a CIS championship Tournament All Star, and as captain of the Huskies, helped led his team to its last National Championship.

A native of Halifax and graduate of Queen Elizabeth High School, Jonah was the Operations Manager for the Department of Athletics & Recreation, before taking over as head coach. Jonah looks forward to building a strong program on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
