LAST LOOK AT LAST YEAR AU reached the NCAA postseason in 2013, advancing to the second round. That was the fifth NCAA postseason berth in school history. AU played at home for the second time in school history and lost to West Texas A&M, 33-28. Last year’s team ended the regular season ranked fourth in the nation and was ranked ninth at the conclusion of the postseason. That fourth place ranking is the pro- gram’s highest since becoming an NCAA II institution. The 2012 Eagles were just the sec- ond team in school history to reach double digits in victories (11-1). Both the 1972 Eagles and last year’s team won 11 games in a season. Last year’s team captured the first GLIAC football championship in school history. AU went 10-0 in league play.

LAST LOOK AT LAST WEEK Defense and the ground game were the determining elements last week as the Eagles ran over Lake Erie, 62-10 in Painesville, Ohio. Ashland rushed for 441 yards. That’s six yards short of the school record of 447 rushing yards, set against Otterbein in 1970. Senior tailback Anthony Taylor rushed for a school, single-game record 311 yards on 29 carries with four touchdown runs. Those scoring runs measured 56, 40, 1 and 13 yards. All four scores came in the first half. AU rushed for a school, single-game record eight touchdowns. The AU defense shut down an offense that ranked among the national leaders in rushing offense and total offense. The Eagles forced four turnovers, collected four sacks and held Anthony Bilal, one of the nation’s most productive running backs, to 64 yards on 18 carries. Ashland led in total yardage, 545-316. Here are two more important statistics. In time of possession, AU led, 36:00-24:00. Lake Erie thrives on a fast-paced offense that constantly pushes the action. Two weeks ago at Saginaw Valley State, the Storm ran a school-record 110 plays. Last Saturday, AU led in total plays, 77-70. The Eagles were in front, 10-0 after one quarter and 31-10 at halftime. The final three quarters were played in a steady rain.

ASHLAND-OHIO DOMINICAN The home field hasn’t meant much in this series. This is the fourth game in the se- ries and so far, the home team has never won. A year ago in Columbus, Ohio, the Eagles were a 44-21 winner. ODU had the lead at halftime, 21-20. AU scored 24 unanswered points in the second half. The win gave Ashland a 6-0 record, 5-0 in conference play. AU led in total yards, 556-278 and ran 88 plays compared to 48 for the Panthers. ODU had two turnovers and Ashland didn’t have a turnover. ODU tailback Brandon Schoen had 109 yards on 22 carries. However, the Eagles completely took away the passing game. ODU employed two quarterbacks, Mark Miller and Tajuan Green. They completed 8-of-19 passes for 148 yards.

For AU, Taylor had 128 yards and Jordan McCune rushed for 115. Both players scored two touchdowns. Ashland rushed for 271 yards. Quarterback Taylor Housewright complet- ed 28-of-43 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Anthony Capasso caught eight passes for 99 yards. In 2011 at Ashland, ODU won, 20-17. The game was tied, 17-17 after three quarters. The Panthers went ahead to stay, 20-17 on a 33-yard field goal by Chris Vortkamp with 8:55 remaining in regulation. That field goal capped a 14-play, 55-yard drive that consumed 5:59. Earlier in the game Vortkamp hit a career-long 47-yard field goal. ODU quarterback Jeremy Fudge completed 25-of-35 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries. ODU converted 13-of-21 third downs (62 percent). In the second half, ODU had the ball for 18:12. The Panthers had the ball for 12:02 in the fourth quarter. Over the final 15 minutes AU ran seven plays and one of those was a punt. In the first game between these schools, Ashland won, 44-15. That game was played in Columbus. AU wide receiver Joe Horn caught eight passes for 167 yards. Housewright completed 19-of-25 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Tailback D.J. McCoy rushed for 102 yards on 25 carries. Safety Tarell Lewis picked up a fumble and raced 45 yards for a touchdown.

BREAKING AWAY FROM THE PACK Last week, Taylor became the first player in AU history to rush for 300 yards. His final total - 311 yards - came on 29 carries and he was on the bench and resting midway through the third quarter. Entering last week, Taylor was 11th in the nation in rushing yards and rushing yards per game. This week, he is third in rushing yards (844) and rushing yards per game (168.8) and 16th in all-purpose yards per game (177.20). He leads the GLIAC in rushing yards per game and is this week’s GLIAC offensive player of the week. Taylor has three games of 200 or more yards in his career. Two of those have come this season. Taylor has surpassed 100 yards in four games this season. The junior had a 56-yard run last week and has had a dash of 50+ yards in four of the five games he’s played this season. Here’s a little historical perspective on Taylor’s game last Saturday. He broke Jason Schwalm’s school record of 292 yards against Wayne State in 2005. That game was played in the mud at Community Stadium. Schwalm set a school record for carries (45) that day. AU ran the ball 53 times against the Warriors - only eight carries were by players other than Schwalm. Schwalm was playing in the fourth quarter, he had two touchdowns in the game and the last came with 4:51 to play in regulation. Ashland won, 27-3. That season, Schwalm set school records for carries (306) and rushing yards (1,494). Taylor is closing in on 1,000 yards and he’s halfway through the season. If he re- mains healthy, it will be interesting to see where he finishes.

AU is running for 236.0 ypg., on the ground and that should help young quarterbacks Tra’Von Chapman and Austin Bruns. The ability to consistently gain yards on the ground should help AU avoid dreaded third-and-eight and third-and-10 situations. Take that steady ground game and the fact that the Eagles don’t hurt themselves with penalties and the Eagles have a good chance to keep improving on offense and grow their passing game.

BLANKET COVERAGE Lake Erie’s average starting field position was its own 24-yardline. Much of the credit for that goes to Ryan Mullins, who handles the kickoffs and the coverage unit. Mullins averaged 63.1 yards per kickoff with one touchback. He kicked off 11 times - that can wear down a leg. Last week, Mullins was able to drive the ball near the goal line on nearly every kick. The Eagles limited the Storm to 19.7 ypr. The Lake Erie offense was look- ing at a long field all afternoon. In the opener at Indianapols, Mullins kicked off three times and averaged a season- best 69.7 yards per kickoff. For the year, Mullins is averaging 60.7 yards per kickoff with three touchbacks.

MORE FROM THE KICKING WORLD Ashland University is inducting another Hall of Fame class this Saturday morning and one of the seven members of that class is kicker Tim Seder. Seder is third on AU’s career field goal list (41)) and he’s fourth in career kick scoring (202). The Ashland High product is sixth in career points (204) at AU. Seder was AU’s starting kicker for four seasons. He played on the 1997 team that advanced to the NCAA playoffs and he was an outfielder on the AU baseball team that reached the College World Series in 1995. When he left Ashland, Seder was near the top of the charts for extra points and field goals. That was a different era, a time when points weren’t scored like they are today. That doesn’t take away from anything Seder accom- plished. For his career, Seder was 41-of-64 (64.1 percent) on field goal attempts and 79-of- 84 (94 percent) on extra point attempts. Seder was a first team All-Midwest Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pick in 1997 and a second team selection in 1996. He went on to kick in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars. Only five players from Ashland have made that trek.

LOST REAL ESTATE Linebacker Chris Harvey had 2.0 tackles for loss (17 yards) last week. That’s the second time this season he had 2.0 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Harvey leads the team in tackles for loss (5.0)

7 ASHLAND EAGLES FOOTBALL EAGLEEAGLE NATIONNATION

MEDER AID Defensive lineman Jamie Meder saw his streak of consecutive games with double digit tackles end at three last week. Meder had eight tackles and forced a fumble against the Storm. The senior leads the team in tackles (46/18 solo). Meder has 2.0 tackles for loss and is third in career tackles for loss (29.5) at AU. Second place belongs to Devin Conwell with 33.

HEAD OF THE CLASS Offensive line coach Doug Geiser reports that over the last several games, left guard James Triplett has graded out the highest among the offensive linemen. Geiser says that Triplett, left tackle Zach Vermillion and center Keith Dingler have all earned high marks in recent games. “It’s the veteran guys, which is what you would expect,” said Geiser.

RETURN TO THE SIDELINES Defensive coordinator Tim Rose made his first appearance of the season on the sidelines last week. Rose fell ill late in the summer and missed all of fall camp and the first several weeks of the season. He helped put together the defensive game plan for the Lake Erie game. Secondary coach Joe Nemith served as the interim defensive coordinator.

PUTTING HIS BEST FOOT FORWARD Ashland is 23rd in the country in net punting (37.94 ypp.). Much of the credit for that goes to punter T.K. Rock, who is averaging 43.1 ypp. Rock has three 50-yard punts and has placed three punts inside the 20-yardline. Again, the coverage unit has played a major role in this area as well.

YARD MARKERS AND MILESTONES * In seven games against GLIAC South Division foes since the start of the 2012 season the Eagles have averaged 46.6 ppg. * The Eagles haven’t allowed a 100-yard rusher for three consecutive games. Last season, in 12 games, only three backs - Indy’s Klay Fiechter, Bilal and Schoen ran for 100 yards against AU. This year, Fiechter and Wayne State’s Toney Davis have reached the century mark. * AU has won eight consecutive Homecoming games. The last time the Eagles lost on Homecoming was in 2004, 25-14 to Mercyhurst. * The Eagles have had three scoring drives of 70+ yards in the last two weeks. * Under Owens, the Eagles have scored 60 or more points seven times.
