Email: [email protected] Abstract Defining species limits and describing species of ants are important to identify taxa and habitats with elevated diversity in areas of high conservation priority such as the Malagasy region. The Pachycondyla wasmannii-group is revised in the Malagasy region where eight species are recognized, four of which are new: P. ma soa la sp. n., P. planicornis sp. n., P. tavaratra sp. n., and P. v azimb a sp. n. Four species have been previously described: P. ca mbo ue i Forel, P. comorensis (André), P. perroti Forel, and P. wasmannii Forel. Pachycondyla perroti admista Forel is newly synonymized under P. perroti. Pachycondyla cambouei is widespread in eastern Madagascar, morphologically variable, and divided into seven morphotypes. An identification key to species and distribution maps are provided for the genus in the Malagasy region. All species are known only from Madagascar except P.

These patterns reveal large sampling gaps, and potential priority areas for conservation action. Northern and south-western parts of the island are richer in genera, whereas eastern and especially northern parts of the rainforest show higher species richness, due to extensive radiations within the genera Pogonostoma and Physodeutera. A set of 23 areas are identified in this study as priority foci for tiger beetle conservation, and six general regions are bioinventory priorities. It covers the period from 17 to 24 March. The next report will be issued early in April 2017, and will be published every two weeks thereafter. Highlights • On 23 March 2017, humanitarian partners in Madagascar and the Government jointly launched a Flash Appeal for $20 million to provide support to 250,000 vulnerable people affected by Cyclone Enawo. • Response activities are rapidly being scaled up, with supplies, additional humanitarian organizations and staff arriving in the most-affected areas of north- eastern Madagascar. • Since the start of the response, more than 76,400 people have received food assistance, and more than 55,700 people have received WASH support. In addition, 60,000 people have received support to access health care, while 8,050 households have benefited from emergency shelter assistance. The Education Cluster has also provided emergency educational needs of 45,100 children. • An elevated rate of malaria cases has been reported from Antalaha and Brickaville in comparison to March 2016; however, no increase in cases of diarrhoea has been reported to date. • UNDAC mission has concluded on 24 March and the work has been handed over to national and in- The boundaries and names shown and the designations used on this map do country counterparts. not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the United Nations. 434,000 5,300 40,520 3,900 >1,300 105 Affected people Currently displaced Houses destroyed Classrooms Polluted water Damaged health damaged* points centres Situation Overview On 23 March 2017, the United Nations, together with other humanitarian partners and the Government of Madagascar launched the Madagascar Cyclone Enawo Flash Appeal, requesting just over US$ 20 million to assist 250,000 most vulnerable people affected by the cyclone for the next three months (until 23 June).

Leeuwenberg Department of PlantTaxonomy, Wageningen Agricultural University, P.O.Box 8010, 6700Wageningen, the Netherlands Abstract Six genera of Apocynaceae have been monographed. These six are restricted to Africa, except for Petchia, which also occurs in Sri Lanka with one endemic species. The study is based on herbarium material and living plants, mostly observed and collected by the author in Madagascar. Petchia replaces the well-known genus name of Cabucala as it has priority, so six new combinations have been made here. Petchia africana from Cameroun has been described as new to science. For Carissa verticillata a new name has been proposed to replace Pichon's homonym, C.pichoniana. In all, 23 names have been reduced to synonymy, 14 of which are even synonymso fPlectaneia thouarsii.

The Union's objective is to promote and encourage the protection and sustainable utilisation of living resources. Several thousand scientists and experts from all continents form part of a network supporting the work of its six Commissions: threatened species, protected areas, ecology, sustainable development, environmental law and environmental education and training. Its thematic programmes include tropical forests, wetlands, marine ecosystems, plants, the Sahel, Antarctica, population and natural resources, and women in conservation. These activities enable lUCN and its members to develop sound policies and programmes for the conservation of biological diversity and sustainable development of natural resources. WCMC - THE WORLD CONSERVATION MONITORING CENTRE The World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC) is a joint venture between the three partners in the World Conservation Strategy, the World Conservation Union (lUCN), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Its mission is to support conservation and sustainable development by collecting and analysing global conservation data so that decisions affecting biological resources are based on the best available information. WCMC has developed a global overview database of the world's biological diversity that includes threatened plant and animal species, habitats of conservation concern, critical sites, protected areas of the world, and the utilisation and trade in wildlife species and products.
