Reverend David L. Parker December 23, 1923 – April 6, 2016 David was always proud of his military service, he was also proud of his ability to fit into his Army uniform throughout his lifetime. David went to Middlebury College for his freshman year, before transferring to Hamilton to attend his father’s alma mater where his twin brother was also studying. David served in the Army, and his battalion was destined for the Battle of the Bulge. The night before the troops were set to ship out to Europe, nine men—out of thousands— had their names called. David was one of these nine sent to Guam instead of France, to serve with the Army Signal Corps. After college, David went on the G.I. Bill to Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Here he studied with some of the greatest theological minds of the twentieth century, including James Muilenburg, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Paul Tillich. David traveled to Amsterdam and attended the historic first meeting of the World Council of Churches as the secretary to Union’s president, Henry Van Dusen. Upon seminary graduation, David was ordained in The Methodist Church and began serving churches as a pastor. For about a decade, he sponsored immigrant families from Germany in his home. Some people stayed with him for a few months, but one family stayed for three years, during which time David learned to speak German like a native, which he did as often as he could. In 1959 David met Merolyn Faith Graham, and they were married in 1960. They had three daughters—Julie, Katie and Valerie—and together they created a loving, hospitable home for family and friends. He was a caring father who enjoyed teaching his daughters army calisthenics, making them animal-shaped pancakes, and writing songs for them on their birthdays. He was also happy and proud that all three daughters, and later a grandson, Eli, would go on to attend Hamilton College. David was a lifetime pastor who served eleven congregations in northern New Jersey, Staten Island and Long Island. He blessed every church he served with his musical abilities as he played the piano and organ and knew over 300 hymns by heart. He LET US REMEMBER also was deeply committed to clear and meaningful liturgy. Churches David served in NYAC included Staten Island-Summerfield, Albertson, Woodmere-Lawrence, and East Meadow. He retired in 1994 and continued to serve in East Hampton until 2004. David was an early supporter of civil rights, women’s rights and gay rights. Additionally he was a community leader in interfaith relations. Usually an easy-going, affable person, he was deeply upset by acts of injustice, and he joined in protests and reached out to individuals to help. Merolyn and David retired to Lord’s Valley, PA, where he continued his active church involvement as organist of the Church at Hemlock Farms. After the death of his 316 - Let Us Remember wife, Merolyn, in 2007, David went to live with his daughter Julie and her family in Larchmont, NY before finally settling at Wesley Village. David died peacefully of natural causes on April 6, 2016. Reverend Willet Ralph Porter, Jr August 28, 1927 – November 4, 2106 Good Methodists, theologically speaking, will not subscribe to the Calvinist belief that Will Porter was destined to find his life’s vocation in the ministry of The United Methodist Church simply because he was born in The Methodist Hospital of Brooklyn. He was the only child of W. Ralph, Sr. and Gertrude Catherine Harris Porter. Willett Ralph received the sacrament of Holy Baptism through the ministry of the Rev. Arthur Bruce Moss at the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Jamaica, Queens. Will’s elementary education was at P.S. 134 followed by graduation from Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, N.Y. He earned a B.S. degree in animal husbandry from Cornell University (1949), and played the coronet as a member of the Big Red Band. Three years later he received the Master of Theology degree from Drew University’s School of Theology in Madison, NJ. As a pastor, Will took his seminary’s motto as his guide, “Freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8 KJV). Shirley Katherine Bates, Deaconess, and the Rev. Porter were married February 8, 1953 at the New Paltz Methodist Church. They celebrated more than sixty-two years of marriage and are the parents of John B. (Gail), David B. (Paulette), W. Ross (Lisa), and Steven R. (Mary-Ann). Six grandchildren completed the Porter household: Melissa, Michael, Philip, Steven, Jr., Coryn and Katelyn. Will and Shirley are the great-grandparents of Mark, Hadley and Riley. At age 20 Will was granted a License to Preach by the New York East Conference. While a seminarian, he became a deacon on probation in the New York Conference (1951), followed by elder’s orders and full membership in that conference (1953). He formally retired in 1989, but continued to serve as a pastor for an additional 21 years! Will’s first episcopal appointment was to New Paltz, Lloyd and Plutarch (1951). Will and Shirley, as experienced by this “preparer,” were the perfect couple ministering to college students; the Porter household moved on to St. John’s Church in Elmont, Long Island (1964); Mount Kisco (1973); and following retirement, faithfully served the Mount Hope congregation in Mahopac Falls for 21 years! Numerous organizations in the New York Annual Conference benefited from Will Porter’s leadership including the Disability Committee; Board of Pensions; Interim Director of the N.Y. S. Methodist Student Movement; President of the N.Y. Methodist

Federal Credit Union; and as a member of the Bowery Mission Ministries Board. LET US REMEMBER Will’s community service was a marvelous expression of John Wesley’s perspective, “the world is my parish” — Umpire in the New Paltz Little League; Chaplain and life member of the New Paltz Volunteer Fire Department; Charter Member of New Paltz Lions Club; President of the Elmont Youth Athletic Association National Baseball League. He was named Mt. Kisco Citizen of the Year, 1989. He was the first recipient of the Annual Humanitarian Award by the Northern Westchester Raul Wallenburg Unit of B’Nai B’Rith; President of Mt. Kisco Rotary Club and Paul Harris Fellow; President of Northern Westchester Clergy Association. He was the First Chair of Northern Westchester Hospital Chaplaincy Committee; Mt. Kisco Boys Club board member; Mt. Kisco Day Care Center board member and Chair of Mt. Kisco Village/ Town Board of Ethics. 318 - Let Us Remember Self-care was important to Will through golf and bowling; his many athletic friends included persons beyond his churches. He was present in the community through so many organizations and activities! Death came suddenly at home in 2015. A Service of Death and Resurrection was held on November 7 at the United Methodist Church of Mt. Kisco. Participants included the Reverends Elizabeth (“Betsy”) J. Ott, District Superintendent (Preacher); Fredric O. Jackson, colleague and friend (Remembrances); Mrs. Diane Laux and Mr. David Porter, musical offering. Interment followed the service at Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Kisco. A memorial service was held at the church on December 13, 2015. At the time of Will’s death, many learned that his favorite Christmas Carol was authored by Christina G. Rossetti, In the Bleak Midwinter. The carol was offered at the memorial service by his granddaughters Coryn & Katlyn Porter, Lindsay Pytel and organist Nick Nicassio. What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him: give my heart. This stanza reflects the quality of life exemplified by Willett R. Porter, Jr. – he gave his heart to Shirley, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and not least of all to Christ and His Church! Prepared by the Rev. Fredric O. Jackson in consultation with Shirley B. Porter

Reverend James Charles Watson September 27, 1919 – December 28, 2015 Jim’s family and friends will remember his love for travelling. A trip to the Holy Land in 1972 convinced Jim of the spiritual value of travel to religious sites, prompting him to host tours, first to the Holy Land and Oberammergau, Germany. After his 1982 retirement he and Marion organized group travel under the name “Memorable Tours,” visiting over 50 countries. The home base for Jim and Marion became Chatham, MA where they expanded the vacation home they had built in 1968. They became active members of the First United Methodist Church of Chatham. Jim enjoyed flying lessons at the nearby airport and sailing on beautiful Pleasant Bay, which he continued to do into his 90’s. After tending Marion through her long illness and her death in 2007, Jim’s loneliness prompted him to send an e-mail to his children, informing them he had invited a young blonde to live with him: Zoey, a camel-colored Lab-Pit Bull mix, who became his loyal and loving companion. Jim was able to stay in his home until the end, with the care and support of Seniors Helping Seniors, Companion Caregivers, and Hope Hospice. Jim grew up on Long Island NY, where he met and married his lifetime partner, Marion Doré in 1943. He trained as a machinist/tool-maker and supervised building artillery gun-sights during WWII. When the war ended Jim and Marion, with their two-year old son Dennis, attended Houghton College. He earned a master of divinity degree from New York Theological Seminary and a master of arts degree from Union Theological Seminary. Jim was a local pastor in the NY East Conference where he served Belmont UMC for two years. He was ordained as a deacon in 1952, then ordained as an elder in 1955. He served as pastor for 35 years in three Long Island, NY churches: Glen Cove, Plainview, and Merrick. During his ministry he was active in ecumenical activities, serving as president of the Long Island Council of Churches for three years, and was awarded several honors for fostering brotherhood and social justice. He died on December 28, 2015 at the age of 96. Jim is survived by a sister, Ann Caton, of Babylon, NY, his three children: Dennis F. Reverend Robert Dudley Woodcock, III December 26, 1946 – March 5, 2016 Bert had a varied and interesting career. After graduating from Brown University with a master of science degree in 1968 he worked briefly as a physicist for the U.S. Navy. He became a probationary member of the New York Conference in 1971, received his master of divinity degree from Hartford Seminary in 1972, and was appointed to East Berlin UMC. He was ordained an elder in the New York Conference in 1974, and in 1977 he was appointed to South Park UMC in Hartford CT. Concerned with medical problems that some of his parishioners faced, he decided to study nursing and received his master of nursing degree from Yale in 1979. He was appointed to Hartford Health Care Ministries that same year. In 1983-84 he served in extension ministry at Newington V.A. Medical Center and in 1985 as a member of the nursing faculty at Western Connecticut State University, where he remained until his retirement from the New York Conference in 2006. In retirement he continued to teach part time until 2011 as an adjunct professor, and as late as this January, he was assisting in continuing education events at The Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital. He was recognized as an excellent and devoted teacher whose students left with a clear understanding of the material. In retirement Bert served on the Conference Board of Pension and Health Benefits. Known for his kindness, concern and eagerness to help others, Bert was active in many groups and organizations, including the CT Council of Parish Nurse Coordinators, the Hartford Foundation, and Leadership Greater Hartford. He enjoyed monthly breakfasts with fellow retired Methodist ministers, and also with Hartford Good Shepherd Church’s men’s group. He was an adult education coordinator at Temple Beth Torah in Wethersfield. He served on the board of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing, in various roles for the International Honor Society of Nursing, Kappa Alpha chapter, and on the Spiritual Care and CPE Advisory Committee at Danbury Hospital. He enjoyed cooking, fine dining, investigating family history, geography, Caribbean cruises, trips to the Maine coast, and playing with his grandchildren. Bert Died on March 5, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; three children: Julien Tremblay, Katherine LeDuc, and Teresa Yankauskas; three grandchildren; and his

sister, Virginia Eisenstein. LET US REMEMBER The family held a private memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association. 324 - Let Us Remember
