This legendary performance inspired Wade to start singing jazz at that early age, but it wasn't until high school that she realized she wanted to make her living as a singer.

First Runner-Up in the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition, Charenee Wade is a notable singer, composer, arranger and educator who received her degree from the Manhattan School of Music. Her accolades include Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Program where she performed her original music at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; being one of the talented four chosen for the Dianne Reeves Young Artist Workshop at Carnegie Hall; 1st Runner-Up in theJazzmobile Vocal Competition; and being selected for the JAS Academy Summer Sessions, 2007-09, directed by Christian McBride.

Charenee is currently a professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music, City College, and with theJazzmobile Workshop program. She teaches various workshops and clinics and was an esteemed judge for the 2010Jazzmobile Vocal Competition, alongside Dr. Billy Taylor and Grady Tate. Charenee performs internationally and graces the stages of the Jazz Gallery, Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy Coca Cola's, the legendary Smalls and the Zinc Bar in NYC.

Wade has toured extensively both in the US and worldwide. Her domestic engagements have included appearances at The Apollo Theater with the Bobby Sanabria Big Band, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Savannah Music Festival, Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, and both the Allen Room and Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. She has performed at Festival de Riou, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and recently in Russia with Yakov Okun. Her musicianship is sought after by many of her peers, including bassist Rufus Reid, who featured her in his composition Linear Surroundings. Pianist Eric Reed invited her to sing “Ruby, My Dear”on his newest album, Adventurous Monk . Saxophonist Tia Fuller’s new albumA Reason, A Season, A Lifetime features Wade as well. Her own debut recordingLove Walked I n, was released in 2010. Her next recording, a project devoted to Gil Scott Heron, will be released in spring 2015 on Motema Music. Charenee has done several videos on singing and other jazz topics for Lincoln Center’s “”Jazz Academy presentations - check them out at youtube.com

PianistKirk Reese will lead a trio to promote his newest CD“Impressions” as the opening act of this concert. Kirk currently teaches piano at Elizabethtown and Messiah Colleges and has been a stalwart of our area’s jazz scene for many years. In addition to a long list of clubs where he’s played throughout the past nearly 30 years, he has collaborated with some of the industry’s most prolific artists, including Phil Woods, Blues Brothers saxophonist Lou Marini, Stefon Harris and Cyrus Chestnut. He has also played along with his brother and sister-and-law, flutist Tom Reese and cellist Laurie Reese, respectively, onThe Reese Project: Blue Etude, which garnered a Grammy nomination in 2002. On the education front, Kirk helped develop an arts infusion program for schools, garnering him national recognition from the Leonard Bernstein Center as an innovator in education. Bassist Steve Meashey & drummer Jeff Stabley will perform with Kirk.

We thankGretna Music for their support in presenting this wonderful artist for the first time in Central PA - we’re sure she will become one of your favorites and make many returns - don’t miss this concert! 4 CentralCPFJ PA2014 Friends FALL of CONCERT Jazz - Special SERIES Event - Sunday, Dec. 14th, 6PM 40th Anniversary Concert and Reception for the popular area jazz band T H I R D S T R E A M

It all began a forty years ago in a garage in Hershey, Pennsylvania where bassistJim Miller and woodwind wizard Tom Strohman hosted jam sessions on the weekends. Some of the musicians at those jam sessions went on to become world famous and it was there that the bandThird Stream was born. In the beginning the band members were: Rick Kline, drums; Bruce "Doc" Whitcomb, guitar; Tom Strohman, woodwinds & piano; and Jim Miller, bass. Their dream was to play creative improvised music that they loved and to communicate this love to the audience. Improvised music, or jazz, has always been designated to a specific audience but they felt that they could combine the creative aspects of this music and provide an entertaining and exciting experience to a much wider audience. Over the years they have accomplished this goal by playing the full spectrum of jazz: Dixieland, swing, be-bop, fusion, free, etc. Third Stream has blossomed into one the finest contemporary musical groups in the Mid-Atlantic region. Unlike many bands, Third Stream has had few personnel changes. Tom Strohman and Jim Miller have remained constant members, the drum chair included Rick Kline, Tom "Thinman" Albert, and currently John Peifer. On guitar was Bruce "Doc" Whitcomb, Phil DeAngeles, Mike Child, and nowJim Easton . Third Stream has appeared in many venues as featured artists, and also shared the stage with Herbie Hancock, Stanley Turrentine, , Tower Of Power, Jeff Beck, Livingston Taylor, Spyro Gyro, Eumir Deodato and other top performers. . We are proud to celebrate this great ensemble’s artistry with a concert and fund raiser for CPFJ in the Central Hotel’s Ballroom on Sunday, December 14th at 6:00pm. The band will play two sets - one featuring the tunes we all remember from the good old days - and a second set with their newest memberGreg Strohman featuring their current music. There will be food and drink available in the spacious ballroom and a patron’s reception following the concert. Tickets are available in this issue or from our website. You can also call the office- 717-540-1010 to order by phone with a credit card. . The Central Hotel, a Best Western Premier Hotel, is located just off the Union Deposit Exit of I-83 - 800 East Park Drive, Harrisburg, PA - you may remember that CPFJ used to host our Festivals a concert series at this venue when it was a Sheraton Hotel. There is ample parking and we suggest parking in back of the hotel to be closer to the ballroom entrance. BUY A PATRON TICKET TO ATTEND THE ARTIST RECEPTION AND GET A FREE COPY OF THE NEW THIRD STREAM ANTHOLOGY CD! I enjoyed Scott Portzline's recollection in the recent newsletter of the CPFJ piano and his experiences with some performers over the years. It jogged my memory too. So here are a few stories.

Diana Krall: CPFJ presented this superstar back when she was first getting started. She was the opening act, not the head liner! Some CPFJ talent scout really earned his money with that find.

Eldar (Eldar Djangirov): I attended a CPFJ Brunch. At the piano was a fresh-faced "kid," maybe in his early teens at most. "Uh-oh. Were we going to suffer through this youngster's 'education'?" He started playing. In seconds everyone was transfixed. Could it be possible? He was more than ready for the big time. He had it all – technique, knowledge of jazz history, mastery of any tempo. Shortly thereafter Columbia (SONY) signed him.

Aaron Goldberg: A few weeks before his CPFJ concert in Harrisburg, the U.S. State Department sent him to Haiti to lift spirits of people who had suffered an earthquake. As the days of the concert approached, we had nothing more than "Don't worry. I'll be there." On the very day, his sidemen, sound and lighting crew and emcee paced the floor as the appointed time approached. Literally with few minutes to spare, he appeared. He quickly recounted his travels earlier in the day. Haiti, border problems getting to the airport in the Dominican Republic, flight to New York, drive to Harrisburg with a friend. Then without any sound check or warmup, he took the stage and gave a memorable performance!

Some of the "Who's Who? Of Jazz Piano" (omitting those that Scott named): Stars like Ahmad Jamal, and drew big crowds and responded with great concerts. Masters like Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Dorothy Donegan, Eddie Palmieri, , Barry Harris, Harold Mabern. Relative newcomers who have gone on to be today's top players like Dena DeRose, Bruce Barth, Bill Charlap, Brad Mehldau, Danilo Perez, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ed Simon, Bennie Green, , and Orrin Evans. Sure, there are many more. But CPFJ's piano history is second to none. With apologies to those I may have inadvertently omitted. Gary R. Hoffman 8 Charenee Wade Quartet - Nov. 9th - Leffler Chapel, Elizabethtown College Oscar Perez, piano; Matthew Rybicki, bass; and Alvester Garnett, drums

Raised in Cleveland, Ohio,Matthew Rybicki has performed with and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Ted Rosenthal, Mark Gould, Wycliffe Gordon, Nnenna Freelon, Renee Fleming, Terell Stafford, Winard Harper, Mark Whitfield, and Victor Goines. He has also had the great fortune of performing at many well-respected venues in New York such as The Village Vanguard and The Blue Note, as well as concert halls and festivals in locations ranging from Italy to Taiwan. Rybicki maintains an active performing schedule, working with his own small ensembles and with many accomplished colleagues and mentors such as Lew Tabackin, Lewis Nash, Dan Nimmer, Oscar Perez, David Berger, Charlie Persip, Charenee Wade, and Loren Schoenberg. An adept educator, Matthew is an artist/instructor for Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he developed and taught the inaugural bass course in the Essentially Ellington Band Director Academy. Matthew received his Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music in 1995 and his Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School in 2004.

Ever since he was seven years old,Oscar Perez has been expressing himself on a piano. A young Oscar made the commitment to make music his life before even getting to ninth grade. As a native of the borough of Queens in New York City, he was exposed to many kinds of music. He later matriculated at the highly respected Jazz Performance Bachelor’s program at the Univ. of North Florida, studying with Harry Pickens and Kevin Bales. He went to the New England Conservatory in Boston, with Danilo Perez and finished his Master’s Degree at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York under the guidance of Sir Roland Hanna. His early twenties saw him sharing the stage with jazz legends Bunky Green, George Russell, and George Garzone. Since moving back to New York, he has been traveling and playing in the musical groups of trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, bassist Christian McBride, trumpeter Eddie Allen, trombonist Steve Turre, guitarist Dave Stryker, vocalists Melissa Walker and Charenee Wade. In addition to employment as a jazz pianist, he toured with Phoebe Snow and singer/songwriter Coby Brown. Recently, he has been appointed music director for St Edward’s Church in Harlem, N.Y. His longstanding commitment to church music has been embodied in the gospel music he explores as the accompanist for the Nightingale/Bamford Gospel Choir. His debut CD entitled NUEVO COMIENZO employs an instrumental quintet of extraordinary New York based artists. “Perez shows his ample skill on this first album, incorporating the stylistic elements of Tyner, Hancock and Chucho Valdes. …It’s just a matter of time before his name enters the jazz public’s consciousness.” Matt Merewitz, All About Jazz

DrummerAlvester Garnett was born in Richmond, Virginia and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Instrumental Performance/ Jazz Studies in 1993 from Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1992 during college under the advice of trumpet master Clark Terry, he entered and won the 3rd place prize in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Drum Competition. Three months after graduation, received a call on the same day from both Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln to come to New York for auditions. After moving to New York, he worked with Betty Carter’s trio in ‘93 &’94 while at the same time being a member of Abbey Lincoln’s quartet for over 2 years. He was also a member of Cyrus Chestnut’s trio from ‘96 to ‘98. Beginning in ‘98 Mr. Garnett began touring extensively with both Regina Carter and James Carter. Mr. Garnett has appeared on Great Performances on PBS in a tribute to Kurt Weill along with Betty Carter, an has recorded with leaders Cyrus Chestnut, Abbey Lincoln, James Carter, & Stefon Harris Mr. Garnett has also worked in the bands of many other great artists - Roy Hargrove’s Quintet, , Al Grey, Stefon Harris, Wynton Marsalis and Lincoln Center’s Jazz For Young People Concerts, Lou Donaldson’s Quartet along with Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jackie Terrason’s Trio, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rodney Jones, Kevin Mahogany, Clark Terry, Eric Reed, Wycliffe Gordon, Pharaoh Sanders, Jimmy Witherspoon, Milt Hinton, Marcus Printup, Greg Osby, John Hicks, Teddy Edwards, Ellis Marsalis, Ron Affif, Jeff Clayton, Ronald Westray, and Werner "Vana" Gierig. Currently Mr. Garnett resides in Brooklyn, New York where he continues to grow musically and performs throughout the country and internationally.

Editors Note: Tim Warfield and our music Committee work very hard to find the best available players for our concert series, camps and festivals - this band is no exception. We hope that you know by now that even though you may not be familiar with the names who appear at CPFJ events, you can rest assured that they will all be of the highest caliber. So come out, enjoy the music and camaraderie, and hear some of these amazing jazz artists who we hope will become favorites for many years to come.....

We hope you came to our October Fall Concert at the Allen Theatre in Annville PA. Saxophonist Grant Stewart and his quartet played two great sets on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Central PA. Thanks to Skip Hicks and his staff at the Allen for allowing CPFJ to host this great band in this beautiful space. We also thank our loyal volunteers for devoting their time and energy. Bassist Peter Washington, a bit worn from his return flight from Japan the night before our concert, came to life as soon as the band kicked off and supplied a deep groove and inspired solos. Guitarist Ilya Lushtak provided the harmonic glue and brilliant melodic soloing and drummer Philip Stewart was the ultimate supporter for the group. Grant’s tenor sound had overtones of Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon and he brought fresh insight to the sound and styles of those masters.

Ron Waters is leading rehearsals for theCPFJ Youth Band . There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!!
