2 0 1 7 Blank Park Zoo FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 11.1.2016 – 10.31.2017 2017 Board of Directors EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Dear Zoo Friends, Toby Joseph Rusty Goode Peg Armstrong-Gustafson Ray Hansen We have just concluded celebrating Blank Park Zoo’s 50th year and there are many things of which Richard Hoffman we are proud. The Zoo had an audience of over 475,000, educated almost 57,500 Iowa children, and our educators traveled over 70,000 miles to over 80 counties and visited 234 libraries. We MEMBERS AT LARGE James Fleming Tim Kintner were thrilled to watch Tumani, our baby eastern black rhino, grow from a birth weight of 80 pounds Matt Fryar Todd Mendenhall to over 1,100 pounds by year-end. Her engaging personality made her a visitor hit and she has Pat Henson Dan Schwarz become an ambassador for helping people understand the desperate need to save her species Michael Hubbell Dean Whitaker from extinction. In November, for the first time in the history of Blank Park Zoo, our female lioness, Jacob Jaacks Jonathan Wilson Neema, gave birth to three healthy cubs. Stay tuned for more additions at the Zoo! Aaron Kennedy BOARD MEMBERS This year we also opened the Sukup Large Mammal Breeding Center and the Margo and Don David Brick Cathy Lacy Blumenthal Giraffe Pavilion. The Sukup Breeding center provides us the space to breed the addax Rochelle Burnett Christopher Osore antelope, a species that is virtually extinct in the wild, and the slender horn and nyala antelope, Chris Coleman Ben Page both with fewer than one thousand left in the wild. The survival plan is to grow our numbers and, Christine Collinet Dirk Pollitt Russell Cross Mark Rasmussen with three other zoos, reintroduce these animals to a protected preserve in Africa. The Blumenthal Steve Deutmeyer Michael Renner Pavilion will allow us to grow our giraffe herd and provide indoor viewing of giraffe year-round. It Jim Hagenbucher Chris Seiberling has indoor feeding and conservation messaging. Brittney Johnson Lou Sipolt Tom Johnson David Stark The Zoo’s master plan, completed in 1984, had an African loop trail. We have completed that loop Jeffrey Karch Julie Stewart with a connecting pathway as part of the Zoo’s 50th Anniversary. It lets visitors walk around the DIRECTORS EMERITUS entire giraffe exhibit and be immersed in a 360-degree African savanna. David Allen Lisa Kruidenier Judy Blank Mary Jean Paschen There was an extensive remodel of our administration building to better serve our guests and Robert Burnett Kevin Prust improve employee wor k space. Suzy Burns Billie Ray Kaye Condon Terry Rich The National Geographic’s statement, “As the wild shrinks, zoos are looked at as modern day Paul Easter Loretta Sieman arks, the last refuge against the rising tide of extinction,” is more relevant than ever. Wildlife, from Jo Ghrist Dotty Thurston the elephant and black rhino to the reefs of the oceans, and pollinators like the monarch butterfly James A. Hourigan DDS Tim Urban and honeybee, are being driven toward extinction by poaching, habitat loss, climate change and IN MEMORIUM pollution. Blank Park Zoo’s most important mission is to help reverse this march toward extinction Gloria Burnett John Peterson through education, volunteerism, involvement, and animal reintroduction to the wild. Helen Hubbell David Wallace Elizabeth Kruidenier The Zoo’s goal is to be a nationally known resource for restoring the natural world. As we look to the next half century, the acronym, SAFE, will be the most important tenet of our SENIOR MANAGEMENT Mark Vukovich Angela Hilbert mission statement: Saving Animals From Extinction. Our legacy will depend on how we as a Ryan Bickel Anne Shimerdla Zoo and as a community contribute to saving wildlife, restoring our Chad Comer Gary Tucker environment, and reversing climate change.

The City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation sees ‘upcycling’ the plant waste as a win-win solution.

IN THE WILD In February 2017, Blank Park Zoo sent large mammal supervisor, Lou Keeley, to volunteer at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Uganda. Due to civil unrest and poaching, rhinos have not inhabited the country since the 1980s. Managed by Rhino Fund Uganda, the sanctuary breeds white rhinos to be relocated within Uganda’s national parks. Lou helped monitor rhino behavior, delivered school supplies, and even went on a night anti- poaching foot patrol. Blank Park Zoo is proud to help save rhinos in the wild! In June of 2017, Blank Park Zoo sent small mammal keeper, Kyle O’Dea to Madagascar. “Traveling to Madagascar to help the Madagascar Biodiversity Project was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was able to see amazing wildlife, including five different species of lemurs. I followed lemur research and reforestation teams and saw the amazing work they are doing in the field. The last half of my trip consisted of two expeditions to capture lemurs for DNA sampling, and to see if lemurs lived in the Tapia forest. This whirlwind of a trip would not have been possible without the amazing support of the Blank Park Zoo.”

14 Blank Park Zoo Foundation The Zoo is committed to providing engaging educational programming for all, from children to adults and teachers to students. The Zoo is committed to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education throughout the state. While many students lose interest in science around fourth grade, they maintain a natural fascination with animals. From babies to adults, animals have the ability to fascinate and captivate people. The Zoo uses this affinity for the natural world to teach basic science concepts and critical thinking skills. Giving students an opportunity to actively engage in science education builds that foundation for future exploration in the subject.

Accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) ensures the highest level of excellence in animal care, exceeding professional standards for animal welfare and management, veterinary care, behavioral enrichment, nutrition and staff training. AZA accreditation standards exceed currently established local, state and federal guidelines. AZA continually monitors accredited organizations and every accredited zoo and aquarium must go through the entire process every five years.
