FADE IN:

INT. JUSTINE AND ADAM'S APARTMENT - DAY

It's evening in an immaculately clean, modern apartment. There's SHOUTING getting louder and louder. ADAM and JUSTINE, both early 20s, burst into the apartment, mid-argument. Justine is dressed in a professional-looking dress, Adam is wearing jeans.

JUSTINE It's just the same thing every day with you. I don't even know what I can do at this point.

ADAM I'm really trying to understand where you're coming from, but I just don't.

JUSTINE That's literally what I'm saying.

ADAM Well why don't you educate me then? Tell me what you want me to do.

Justine sighs.

JUSTINE What did you do today?

Adam chuckles.

ADAM What?

JUSTINE Just tell me everything you did today. I'd love to hear all the exciting things that happened in Adam's world this time.

ADAM Okay fine. Today I woke up and went--

JUSTINE And what time was that?

ADAM Like one-thirty I think.

Created using Celtx 2.

Silence.

EXT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

The apartment is in a large, brand new complex that does not fit the beat up two-family houses on either side. On the street, there are a group of tough looking guys drinking and smoking cigarettes while yelling at the occasional early morning jogger. We see their third floor window SLAM shut.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Their room is at the end of a short hallway from the living room. Clothes are strewn around the room, it is much less neat than the rest of the apartment.

JUSTINE I can't even think with all that fucking noise outside. What time even is it?

ADAM It's gotta be at least 4 or 5 by now.

JUSTINE Someone has to do something about that. Those assholes just stand on the corner and scream at each other all the time.

ADAM Oh yeah, I can't imagine someone yelling all the time for no reason.

Justine abruptly rushes out of the room.

ADAM C'mon I'm just kidding, baby, you know that. I love your voice no matter how much you yell.

Adam laughs to himself. After a moment, he casually walks after her.

ADAM I mean in their defense, they were there before we even moved in. Now that I think about it I think they're out there more than we're even home. Pretty sure that corner might be legally theirs now or something--

Justine brushes by Adam in the hallway carrying a suitcase and keys. She swiftly walks back into their bedroom and throws a few fist-fulls of clothes in. She zips up the bag and proceeds towards the front .

ADAM Okay you made your point, I'm sorry. Can we please just go to bed now? I'm so tired of all this fighting.

Justine opens the door and pauses. She turns to Adam, calmly.

JUSTINE I'm glad you find this funny.

ADAM I promise nothing's funny. I was just being stupid.

JUSTINE You're not stupid, Adam, you're oblivious. I hope you figure this whole growing up thing out someday. (pause) But I'm done waiting for someone who still thinks they're 18.

Justine shuts the door behind her before Adam can say a word. He watches her leave from the window.

ADAM Where are you even going?

JUSTINE Shouldn't matter to you.

Justine unlocks the door from across the street. The group of guys on the street turn their attention to her, as she walks by.

TOUGH GUY #1 What's wrong, gorgeous? Boy troubles?

Justine ignores the comment and continues towards the car. Adam yells out the window.

ADAM What the fuck? That's my car!

JUSTINE Oh stop, your parents wanted me to

Created using Celtx 4.

have it anyway.

Huge laughter erupts from the tough guys as Justine starts the car.

TOUGH GUY #1 Ay, if you need some company where you're going just say the word.

ADAM Hey, fuck you.

The group stops and looks up to the window.

TOUGH GUY #1 Why don't you come the fuck down here huh, tough guy? I'll knock your teeth through the back of your fucking head before your girl puts her seatbelt on.

TOUGH GUY #2 Who's this fuck think he is?

The guys stumble towards the front steps and drunkenly bang on the door.

ADAM (quiet) Sorry.

Adam quickly shuts the window and slowly wanders to the refrigerator, grabs a six-pack of beer, and sits on the couch. He looks at the spotless coffee table, pauses, and slowly places his feet on top.

INT. ADAM'S BEDROOM - DAY

Adam is sprawled out on the middle of the large, messy bed, deep asleep. The room is now completely trashed; empty beer cans and whiskey bottles line the floor, and an open pizza box sits at the foot of the bed.

It is the middle of the day, and the room is extremely bright from the sun coming through the unshaded windows.

A LOUD RINGING fills the room for several seconds before Adam finally reaches for his phone. After he slowly opens his eyes and gets his bearings, he flips over and eagerly grabs his phone. He looks at the name and drops his head before rejecting the call and rolling back over.

Created using Celtx 5.

ADAM (mumbles) Fuck that.

After a few seconds of quiet, the phone rings again. Adam grunts out of frustration and forces himself to sit up. He slaps himself in the face and grabs his phone. He clears his throat and takes a deep breath.

ADAM Hello.

ADAM'S DAD Wow, just waking up huh?

ADAM Nah my voice just sounds like this.

ADAM'S DAD I'm sure.

ADAM What's up, Dad?

ADAM'S DAD Good. How's work going?

ADAM It's good. Real good.

ADAM'S DAD Is it now?

ADAM Yeah, I'm getting some great experience.

ADAM'S DAD Well that's funny because I talked to your boss. He says you haven't come in once this week.

ADAM (pause) Oh yeah, I've just been crazy busy this week.

ADAM'S DAD Jeez, well what does Justine think of all this?

Created using Celtx 6.

ADAM Actually, Justine and I broke up.

ADAM'S DAD You what?

ADAM ADAM'S DAD We talked about it and we She was great. That's a real just don't think there's a shame. How'd you manage to future because we both want screw this one up? different things.

ADAM I didn't screw anything up, it just didn't work out. (pause) Look thanks for checking in, Dad, is there anything else?

ADAM'S DAD Actually yes. The real reason I'm calling you is because I'm obligated to tell you that you should probably give your mother a call.

ADAM What does that mean?

ADAM'S DAD I don't really know, but I was told to tell you that things have gotten worse with her.

ADAM ADAM'S DAD What do you mean worse? How Look, all I know is that sick is she? Is she going to apparently she's not doing be okay? great. You can do anything you want with that information.

ADAM I should see her.

ADAM'S DAD You can do whatever you want, but it's all on you. I'm not paying for a cross country flight if you're not even going to show up for work.

ADAM Well fine maybe I'll just drive to

California.

Adam looks out the window, where his parking space is empty.

EXT. STREET - NIGHT

Adam stumbles around, mumbles to himself, visibly hammered. He strolls down the dark, city street, when he hears muffled MUSIC and TALKING. He notices a beat up metal door below the sidewalk with no sign. He walks closer and opens the door a crack to check inside.

INT. BAR - NIGHT

A true dive bar, filled with locals from the neighborhood. Everyone clearly knows each other. Irish music blasts as people loudly talk, dance and drink.

Adam opens the door and tries to casually walk towards the bar. He immediately draws the attention of everyone he passes. He stumbles onto an open stool.

TYLER Coming in hot there, huh?

Adam laughs.

ADAM You didn't see that.

TYLER, early 20s, sits on the stool next to Adam, drinking a beer alone. He wears a ratty, worn jacket and an old baseball cap.

Adam tries to get the bartender's attention for several minutes, while he clearly ignores him. Eventually, a huge man with prison tattoos saunters over.

BARTENDER Alright what'll you have?

ADAM (slurring) Vodka redbull, please.

The bartender gives Tyler a look of amusement.

BARTENDER (sarcastically) You want a straw too?

Created using Celtx 8.

ADAM If you've got one sure.

Tyler turns away trying not to laugh. The bartender nods and walks to the other end of the bar.

TYLER Let me guess, just moved here?

Adam turns to Tyler, confused.

ADAM Uh yeah...a little over a month ago. How'd you know that?

TYLER Between the pink polo and vodka redbull, you're not exactly Southie's finest.

ADAM (looking around) Yeah I've never seen anything like this. Looks like the movies in here.

TYLER This is what people that are actually from here look like.

The bartender returns with a grin on his face. He carries a glass of whiskey, neat. He slides it to Adam.

BARTENDER One cosmo. That's ten.

Tyler laughs to himself.

Adam is confused, but drunkenly takes out his wallet and puts a ten dollar bill down.

The bartender looks at him, motionless.

BARTENDER What? No tip for this first class service?

Adam sighs, but reluctantly goes back into his wallet and takes out a couple ones. The bartender picks up the cash and walks back.

Created using Celtx 9.

BARTENDER Pleasure.

Adam takes a sip and tries to hold back his grimace.

ADAM What did you say your name was?

TYLER I didn't. What are you doing in here anyway?

ADAM (drunk mumbling) Hmm, what am I doing here? Where am I anyway?

TYLER Gonna have to speak up, buddy. Can't hear shit.

Adam composes himself.

ADAM (serious) My girlfriend left with my car a week ago.

He drops his head.

Tyler laughs hysterically.

ADAM Of course. Laugh it up. I know I'm a joke.

TYLER (still laughing) Jesus, that's hilarious. She just took off. I respect it, to be honest.

Adam fights back a smile.

ADAM She was always ambitious.

TYLER Yeah, sounds like a real keeper.

Adam lets out a laugh, then shoots the rest of his whiskey down.

Created using Celtx 10.

TYLER They make a mean cosmo.

Tyler puts his hand up.

TYLER (yells) Ay, Bobo, can we get another round?

Adam nods.

The bartender comes over with two more glasses of whiskey.

Adam looks around the bar as he sips his drink. He takes note of all the old Boston memorabilia on the walls. There's old Red Sox jerseys and pictures of Irish gangsters everywhere.

He turns back to Tyler, but his seat is empty.

Adam wobbles in his stool, extremely drunk. He throws his hand up and leans over the bar.

ADAM BOBO! Hey, over here!

BARTENDER Fuck did you just call me? You think you know me?

Before Adam can respond, a hand slaps down on his shoulder.

TOUGH GUY #1 This guy giving you problems, B?

Adam looks up at the guy, but is too drunk to recognize him.

TOUGH GUY #1 You gotta forgive my friend, here. Kid's girl took off on him the other day.

BARTENDER You know this fuck?

TOUGH GUY #1 This is my friend. (turns to Adam) What's your name again?

Created using Celtx 11.

ADAM (loudly) I'm Adam.

Adam sticks his hand out. The bartender walks back to the other side.

The room spins, and Adam drops his head down on the bar.

BARTENDER Hey...HEY...Time to go. You gotta get the fuck out of here!

The bartender shakes Adam until he raises his head to see a completely empty bar. All the lights are turned on, and the bartender wipes down the bar.

ADAM What? Where am I?

BARTENDER Disneyland. Go the fuck home.

Adam stumbles to his feet and wobbles out the door.

EXT. BAR - NIGHT

Adam walks outside on a cool, fall night. He stops and leans against a wall, holding his head.

TOUGH GUY #2 Look who it is!

The group of tough guys walk towards him from the corner. Before he knows it, he is surrounded.

TOUGH GUY #1 Adam, right?

ADAM How do you know my name?

TOUGH GUY #1 Aw, I thought we were pals.

He takes out a cigarette and hands it to Adam.

ADAM Oh no thanks, man.

Created using Celtx 12.

TOUGH GUY #1 Come on, smoke up. I insist.

He reaches out and lights Adam's cig.

Adam takes a drag and throws his head back out of pleasure, then coughs.

The whole group laughs.

TOUGH GUY #1 That's my guy.

He puts his hand out to dap up Adam. When Adam grabs his hand, the guy pulls him forward. He puts his foot behind Adam to trip him, then throws him backwards onto the street.

TOUGH GUY #1 So clumsy. Get the fuck up.

Adam scrambles to get back on his feet. He backs up into the middle of the street. He tries to run, but the group surrounds him again. The first guy delivers one powerful right hand to Adam's jaw. He collapses.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

A MAN, 40s, is about to leave for work, early in the morning. He wears a mechanic uniform, and grabs his brown bag lunch off the table before heading towards the door. As he opens the door to his apartment, Adam's upper body drops at his feet.

MAN #1 Jesus, what the fuck?

EXT. APARTMENT - DAY

Adam's head hits the ground and he wakes up. He rolls on the ground grabbing his head in pain. He clearly passed out while leaning against the man's door.

MAN #1 Fuckin' junkies again.

He grabs Adam by his shirt and pushes him out the door. Adam cannot get his balance and falls down the stoop onto the sidewalk. The man walks down the steps and stands over Adam.

MAN #1 I better not catch you shootin' up on

my steps again. Understand?

Adam looks around, still completely lost.

MAN #1 Hey! You hear me?

Adam nods, shaking from both fear and his hangover.

EXT. SIDEWALK CORNER - DAY

Tyler stands on the corner, leaning against a brick building. He is wearing ratty, oversized clothes with his up. He takes out a large wad of cash from his pocket, and counts.

He hears SHOUTING and turns to see Adam laying on the ground. The man gets into his car and drives away.

Tyler casually strolls down the street towards Adam. He stops and looks down at Adam.

TYLER Fuck happened to you?

ADAM (slurring) I need to go to California.

TYLER That's kind of a hike for this time of day.

ADAM I need to go home.

TYLER Yeah, you really do.

Tyler puts Adam's arm around him, and walks him down the street.

TYLER Alright, move it.

ADAM Where are we going?

TYLER You're going home.

Created using Celtx 14.

ADAM That's good. I need to go back to California.

TYLER Ya know, I always wanted to see the pacific. Chill with some movie stars.

ADAM (screams) ROAD TRIP!

Tyler chuckles.

INT. ADAM'S APARTMENT - DAY

Tyler drags Adam through the door, and drops him on the couch. The apartment is trashed.

TYLER Damn, nice place.

Tyler looks up and pokes the elaborate chandelier above his head, not even noticing the mess.

ADAM Good one.

TYLER Alright, take care.

ADAM (to himself) I wish I could smoke.

Tyler shuts the door and steps back in.

TYLER How much you want?

ADAM Man, I don't even know. I haven't smoked weed since college, why?

TYLER Well just so happens I've got a little on me.

Tyler takes a jar out of his backpack. He drops a couple nugs of weed into a plastic bag. There is maybe $20 worth in it.

Created using Celtx 15.

TYLER How's forty sound?

Adam nods and reaches for his wallet. He checks all his pockets.

ADAM Well they stole my wallet. Hold on I've got cash somewhere.

EXT. BALCONY - DAY

The two guys sit on the wooden deck, leaning against the apartment wall.

TYLER So, when we goin to Cali?

ADAM Well I've got no money and no car now, so I don't think I'm going anywhere.

TYLER Think mine'll make it?

He points to a parked on the street below them. The car is covered in rust, complete with cracked and missing hubcaps.

Adam stands up to look at the car, he is in awe.

TYLER Is that not the prettiest shitbox you've ever seen?

ADAM (laughing) Fuck, I haven't been this high in years. Justine always hated the smell.

Tyler shakes his head.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

Tyler drives through the city streets, alone. The interior of the car is just as worn down as the outside. In the backseat, there are blankets and pillows strewn around. Tyler smokes a cigarette with one hand and shovels McDonald's french fries into his mouth with the other, while nodding to the MUSIC.

Tyler pulls into a dark side street and shuts his car off.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

He reaches into the , takes out a pill bottle. He pops one and washes it down with his flask. He then climbs into the backseat and tries his best to get comfortable and sleep.

INT. LIQUOR STORE - DAY

Adam walks up to the cash register and places three bottles of liquor and a 30 rack of beer down. He is wearing an unzipped sweatshirt and sweatpants with sun glasses on to partially cover up his cuts.

He takes out his wallet as the WOMAN, late 50s, behind the counter judgementally glares at him. It is the middle of the day.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

Adam bobbles his alcohol as he opens the door. His phone RINGS while his hands are full. He struggles to the kitchen where he drops the booze and looks at his phone. He looks at the name and immediately answers.

ADAM Hello.

ADAM'S MOM Hi, honey. How are you?

INT. HOSPTIAL - DAY

ADAM'S MOM, late 50s, lays in a hospital bed with tubes on her face. She looks sickly, but has a peaceful smile on her face.

ADAM (stammering) Uh, I'm good. I'm good. Um, how are you, mom? How's everything, uh, going?

ADAM'S MOM (calmly) I'm okay, sweetie. They got me on some new treatment now.

Her voice sounds hoarse and weak.

Created using Celtx 17.

ADAM Oh, okay great. That's good, right?

ADAM'S MOM (chuckling) Who knows? I don't think these doctors like me much. They always tell me I play my music too loud.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

Adam sits down on the foot of his bed. He looks out the window with his phone to his ear. He laughs, sadly.

ADAM (laughing) Let me guess, Grateful Dead?

INT. HOSPITAL - DAY

ADAM'S MOM I just don't know what this place has against the Dead-

A NURSE, late 20s, walks in and picks up a tray next to Adam's mom.

ADAM'S MOM (to the nurse) Excuse me, can I ask you a question? What do you have against the most culturally important band of this century?

The nurse rolls her eyes and walks away.

ADAM'S MOM (to Adam) Hmm. Probably a fascist.

INT. APARTMENT DAY

Adam shakes his head as he laughs.

ADAM You never change, mom. You know they are just trying to help.

ADAM'S MOM Sure, they are. That's the same thing they say about the police or these

politicians. Everyone's just trying to help.

ADAM Oh stop it, you don't have to make everything political.

ADAM'S MOM Mhmm (coughs aggressively) It's great to hear your voice, sweetie.

Adam drops his head into his hand. He is holding back tears.

ADAM I need to see you, mom. I don't know how but I'm gonna come see you, okay?

ADAM'S MOM Sure, honey, you can come surprise me whenever.

INT. HOSPITAL - DAY

A group of nurses and doctors rush into her room. They check the monitors around her, frantically.

ADAM I'm serious. I'm gonna be there. (pause) Hey, what's going on?

ADAM'S MOM (to the nurse) What is it now?

NURSE Ma'am I'm going to have to ask you to put your phone away, so we can run some more tests on you.

ADAM'S MOM Um oh okay. (to Adam) Okay, sweetie, I've got to go now. I'll see you soon though, right?

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

Adam stands up and leans against the window.

Created using Celtx 19.

ADAM Wait, what's happening? Mom?

The phone call ends. Adam covers his face, as he starts crying. He hits the wall with his hand. He then looks up out the window onto the street.

EXT. BAR - NIGHT

Adam paces outside the bar door, trying to build up the courage to go inside. Muffled MUSIC and SHOUTING are in the background.

Suddenly, the shouting gets louder and we hear a loud SMASH as a glass bottle shatters. Adam jumps and turns towards the door when two MEN burst through the door, fighting each other.

Adam jumps out of the way as the two guys throw punches in the street. Five or six other people stagger out to watch the fight. Adam stands back against the wall, shocked.

As he is about to turn and walk home, Adam spots Tyler. He stands a few feet away from the fight, cheering and smoking a cigarette.

TYLER Oh come on Fitz, watch the right!

Adam walks around the commotion towards Tyler. He stands a few feet away from him, trying to draw his attention.

ADAM Hey... (pause) HEY!

Tyler turns away from the fight, and looks at Adam with disregard.

TYLER Hey, what's up buddy. Good to see ya.

He nods and turns back to the fight. One of the men hits the other with a brutal straight right, and knocks out cold.

TYLER Jesus, Fitz what did I tell you about that right. (pause) Alright, that's all folks.

Created using Celtx 20.

Tyler walks towards the two men. He pats the one that still standing on the shoulder.

TYLER (under his breath) Lucky punch.

He crouches down to look at the guy that got knocked out.

TYLER Fiiitzyyy. Yoo hoo.

Suddenly the man jumps up and walks back into the bar. Tyler shrugs his shoulders and stays outside.

Adam walks up to Tyler again.

ADAM Wow, what the hell happened there?

TYLER Who knows? Those guys always find a reason to fight. I'd be surprised if they remember it in an hour.

ADAM So everyone just fights each other for fun here?

TYLER I mean not everyone. You'll never catch me getting my ass beat like that. I never really got it either, but it is entertaining.

Tyler turns to walk back into the bar, when Adam reaches and grabs his arm to stop him.

ADAM Wait, hold on. Uh, I actually wanted to ask you a question, Tyler. (pause) Um, I was just going to ask if you were serious about what we were talking about the other day.

TYLER (pause) Oh... yeah, yeah! For sure, I've always got weed if you're trying to pick up some more.

Created using Celtx 21.

ADAM No not that. I meant about the whole road trip thing.

TYLER Ohhh, right, okay umm... Yeah, fuck it. I mean I'll do anything to get out of this shit hole. When we leavin'?

ADAM Well that's the thing... I still don't have a car so we'd have to take yours. So its really up to you.

TYLER Right. Right... Alright so how's tomorrow sound?

ADAM (shocked) Oh... tomorrow, wow. Umm yeah. Great. I can definitely do that--

TYLER I'll swing by sometime tomorrow. Can we get the fuck back inside yet? I'm falling behind here. (holds up empty glass)

EXT. CAR - DAY

It's early morning. The sun rises and brightens the car, while Tyler sleeps. It's parked in an empty lot by the Boston harbor. A seagull sits on the mirror of the car and stares at Tyler. He SCREECHES LOUDLY.

INT. CAR - DAY

Tyler reluctantly opens his eyes at the sound of the bird. He grabs his head and sits up in the back seat. As he stretches, he sees a SECURITY GUARD, male late-50s, towards his car from the other side of the parking lot.

Tyler acts frantically in the back seat. He takes his large wad of money and jars of weed and shoves them in a hole under the backseat. In one motion, he jumps into the front seat, starts the car, and skids out of the parking lot.

EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY

The security guard stops and stares as Tyler cruises by. Tyler awkwardly tries to hide his face as he drives.

Created using Celtx 22.

Morning talk radio plays in the car. A classic, deep radio VOICE speaks.

VOICE Hey all you early birds out there. Those early morning blues aren't stopping us today, and I am here to tell YOU, yes you, that the worm is still out there for the taking.

Adam picks up speed, driving down a straight road, past abandoned warehouses.

VOICE Of course you are tuned into the realest station in Boston, and your- excuse me THE- host from the coast, Matty Miles here to carry you to wherever the road takes you today.

The voice fades as Tyler's surroundings quickly change from dilapidated, industrial buildings to brand new apartment complexes on the same street.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Tyler sits on the window sill in Adam's room, across from his bed. Adam is deep asleep and SNORING. He lays in a ball of sheets and blankets, with empty bottles on his nightstand.

Tyler patiently waits and tosses peanuts into his mouth. He starts tossing them across the room at Adam. After four or five land around his head, one hits his face.

Adam jumps up, startled, and tries to cover himself with blankets.

ADAM JESUS CHRIST! How the fuck did you get in here!?

Adam rubs his eyes and holds his head in pain.

ADAM Fuck... (he pats around his bed, looking for his phone.) what time is it?

TYLER Probably around 7 by now.

Created using Celtx 23.

ADAM What the fuck? Why?... How'd you get in here?

TYLER You gotta stop leaving that door open. The next guy won't be so friendly.

Tyler gets up and walks towards the living room.

TYLER We better get going if we don't wanna get stuck in rush hour... And will you put some fucking clothes on?

A shirt flies through the door, into Adam's room.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Tyler walks around Adam's still messy living room. He looks at pictures on the wall of Adam's family. He sees pictures of Adam's high school baseball team, graduation photos, and Christmas pictures.

He makes his way over to the couch, where he clears trash off the seat. Tyler sits down, as we hear the SHOWER RUNNING from Adam. Tyler taps his foot impatiently.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Adam walks out of his room into the living room. Tyler is on the couch, rolling a joint on top of a picture frame of Adam and Justine.

ADAM Really? On my picture frame?

TYLER Just trying to pack for the road. Plus I figured this wasn't all that important to you these days.

Tyler looks around the room at all the other pictures of Justine.

TYLER Guess I was wrong.

ADAM Whatever. I don't even care.

Created using Celtx 24.

TYLER So you have any sort of plan for this trip or what?

ADAM Well I'm still working out the details but I have some family friends that live out near Buffalo, so I figured we could make that our first stop.

TYLER Family friends?

ADAM Yeah my Dad was business partners with this guy back when I lived in California, so our families were always together. Now they live in upstate New York I guess.

TYLER So you're just gonna show up at their doorstep with some random kid you picked up off the street?

ADAM Oh they won't care, they love me. They have a daughter that I was super close with when I was in school.

TYLER Oh yeah? An old flame huh?

ADAM I mean I guess you could call it that.

TYLER (laughing) I see you, adding a little rebound action into this journey.

ADAM (smiling) You never know I guess, but she's cool you'll probably like her.

EXT. CAR - DAY

Tyler stands outside the car, as he rearranges his belongings before Adam can see. He quickly moves his sleeping bag, pillows and toiletries from his backseat into the .

Adam trudges down the apartment stairs with his bags. He walks up to the trunk, out of breath.

ADAM Wow, how'd you even have time to pack all this so early in the morning?

TYLER (pause) I just don't own that much I guess.

ADAM Are we going to be able to fit all this?

Tyler looks at the two massive suitcases that Adam brought down.

TYLER Jesus, I didn't realize you were bringing your whole fucking apartment.

ADAM Look, I'm gonna need all of it. Plus there's no way I'm carrying these back up all those stairs.

They both look at the already packed trunk.

EXT. STREET - DAY

The trunk of the car is completely open and overflowing with luggage. It contained by an insane amount duct tape wrapped all around the back of the car. Blankets and clothes are flapping out of the back windows too.

INT. CAR - DAY

Tyler is in the driver seat, Adam is shotgun. The backseat is packed with luggage.

They drive out of a tunnel onto the Zakim bridge, with the famous white suspension beams. There is a bit of an awkward silence as Adam looks out the window, trying to think of something to say.

ADAM You travel a lot?

Created using Celtx 26.

TYLER (scoffs) I don't get much vacation time.

ADAM I get that. My dad always used to take my sister and I on his business trips whenever he got to go somewhere nice like Italy or Hawaii or something. But ever since we grew up and moved out we never seem to find the time anymore.

TYLER Well isn't that tragic.

Adam nods and takes the hint to stop talking. He turns out the window and looks as the last buildings begin to thin out, leaving the city,

TYLER Am I just going straight the whole way or what?

ADAM Yeah I think it should be a pretty straight shot since we're going west.

Tyler turns out the window, and looks at the increasingly rural land around the highway.

TYLER This is the first time I've left.

ADAM Left? Left where?

TYLER The neighborhood.

ADAM (shocked) What? You've never left Boston? That's crazy. (pause) Well I'm excited for you then. This should be fun. A little change of scenery is always nice.

Tyler quickly regrets sharing that, and gets defensive.

Created using Celtx 27.

TYLER (sarcastically) Yeah it's funny, my Dad always forgot to take me with him on his business trips.

ADAM Oh that's too bad. He still around?

TYLER Yeah, they're all still there somewhere.

ADAM Who's them all?

TYLER What do you want my entire fucking ancestry or something?

ADAM Gotcha.

TYLER So how long til' we get to this girl's house?

ADAM Let me think. (mumbles to himself) Six? I think like six or seven hours. Something like that.

Tyler quietly nods.

Adam turns and looks out the window again. He puts his head down on the window, and closes his eyes.

Tyler is jittery. He taps his hands on the and anxiously scans around. He looks over to make sure Adam is asleep, then fishes under his seat. He swerves on the road before he clumsily grabs a pill bottle and pours it into his hand.

There are pills of all shapes, sizes and colors. He picks out three of them, swallows them with no water, then grimaces and shakes his head.

INT. CAR - DAY

Adam wakes up and sleepily looks around. The sun is just

Created using Celtx 28. beginning to go down now. There is nothing but farmland on either side of the car.

ADAM (yawning) How long was I out for?

Tyler stares ahead at the open road with a glazed look in his eyes. He is too zoned out to even hear Adam.

Adam takes out his phone to check the time.

ADAM Jeez. I wonder where we are. (he looks on his phone) Oh shit. We're only like a half hour away.

Tyler snaps out of his trance.

TYLER Huh? What?

ADAM Apparently we're almost there.

TYLER Oh nice. That's great... Hey, I gotta take a piss real quick. You think I could just pull over somewhere?

Adam looks out the window at the wide open landscape. There is not a building in site.

ADAM Yeeaah, I'd say you're fine.

EXT. ROAD - DAY

The car pulls onto the side of a grassy farm, with cows grazing in the distance.

INT. CAR - DAY

TYLER Alright, be right back.

Adam nods, and takes out his phone.

EXT. CAR - DAY

Created using Celtx 29.

Tyler hustles around the back of the car. He gets ready to pee, but hunches over with his hands on his knees and throws up. When he is done vomiting, he wipes his mouth and collects himself before walking back to the car.

He walks up to the passenger side window to talk to Adam.

TYLER Yo, if we're that close, do you wanna just get us to this girl's house, since you know how to get there.

ADAM Yeah sure, that makes sense.

Adam gets out and proceeds to the driver side, while Adam gets in the passenger side.

INT. CAR - DAY

Tyler now stares out the window, admiring the open countryside.

TYLER Jesus, what the fuck are those things?

Adam looks out the window, towards four to five cows grazing in the distance. Each cow has a black front and behind, but is white in its midsection.

ADAM (laughing) I believe those are cows. (pause) Wait, have you really never seen a cow before?

TYLER (defensively) Look, I've seen plenty of cows. I just didn't know they all looked like fucking oreos. What the fuck is wrong with them?

ADAM I don't know I guess that's just what they look like. I remember driving here when I was little and my mom convinced me that those cows make chocolate milk.

Created using Celtx 30.

Tyler finally breaks out of his tough face and laughs. Both boys start cracking up hysterically.

ADAM Not even kidding. I used to always beg her to pull over because I loved chocolate milk so much.

TYLER (laughing) Weren't the brightest kid, huh?

ADAM I guess not. I remember I came back home to my Dad all excited saying I wanted to buy a cow one day so I could get my own chocolate milk.

TYLER What he think of that?

ADAM He told me farmers don't make any money and I wouldn't either if I keep believing everything people say.

They both stop laughing and sit in awkward silence for a few moments before Tyler finally speaks up.

TYLER So you excited to see her?

ADAM Who, Liv? Yeah, I guess. It's been a while.

TYLER Nah, I mean your mom. That is why we're doing this, right?

ADAM Oh. Yes... Yeah I definitely am.

TYLER You guys close?

ADAM We used to be. I lived with her until I was like 10 and then my Dad made me move back with him and my sister. I barely ever got to see her after that.

Created using Celtx 31.

TYLER Well, that's kinda fucked up.

ADAM Yeah, I don't know. There was a whole court thing about custody but I didn't even know what was going on at the time.

Tyler nods his head, not knowing what to say.

ADAM Alright, I think we're almost there. This looks like their road.

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT

It is dusk, now. The car drives through a wide street with huge houses spread out between each other on both sides.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

Tyler looks around in shock at the mansions.

TYLER You sure they know we're coming?

ADAM Yeah for sure. I just texted Liv and she said they're expecting us.

TYLER I mean WE, do they know that I'm with you?

ADAM Yup, I said my good friend Tyler is with me.

TYLER I feel like I should change or something. Is this okay?

ADAM (smiling) Are you getting nervous?

TYLER I'm just trying to make sure.

Adam pulls into a gate with tall hedges on either side. The

Created using Celtx 32. driveway is long, with a huge, modern house at the top of it.

TYLER This is like fucking Eyes Wide Shut. Am I supposed to put a mask on or some shit?

ADAM Calm down, they're super cool.

Adam stops at the opening of a sleek garage that holds at least five or six . He parks the rust bucket next to a sparkling black Bentley. They both get out of the car.

Tyler nervously brushes off his track jacket and sweatpants and looks at his reflection in the window, parting his hair.

They walk on a stepping stone path that wraps around to the front of the house. They get to a large mahogany door with cobblestone steps. Adam casually RINGS the doorbell and looks at his phone.

TYLER What did you say her parents do?

ADAM They're in finance. Same as my dad.

TYLER (puzzled) Oh cool, cool. Love finance.

Adam rings the doorbell again.

TYLER Honestly, I'm getting a second wind. I think I can just keep driving if you want.

ADAM Oh stop. Why pass up a nice bed to sleep in?

Tyler nods his head in agreement at the sound of an actual bed.

Eventually, they hear footsteps and a WOMAN in her late 30s opens the door.

MAID Yes?

Created using Celtx 33.

ADAM Hey, I'm Adam.

MAID Can I help you?

ADAM We're here to see the Lindermans.

She looks at him blankly.

ADAM I talked to Liv, they should be expecting us.

Tyler tries to get Adam's attention to leave. Then a voice yells from inside the house.

LIV OH MY GOD, ADAM?

LIV, an attractive 20 year old girl sprints to the door and gives Adam a big hug. She is wearing a band T shirt, ripped skinny jeans, and white shell toe adidas.

ADAM (smiling) Hey, what's up? How are you?

LIV I'm great. I haven't seen you in forever! How are you doing?

ADAM I'm doing good. Thanks again for letting us crash here.

LIV Don't even mention it. I can't believe how long it's been!

ADAM I know, I know it's so crazy.

Tyler awkwardly stands on the steps, in awe of Liv's beauty. The maid turns and walks back into the house.

ADAM Oh my bad, this is my friend Tyler.

Created using Celtx 34.

LIV Hi, Tyler. Nice to meet you.

TYLER (stammering) He- hello. Hey, I'm Tyler. Great meeting you.

They awkwardly shake hands, and Tyler looks down embarrassed.

LIV Well, come on in guys, make yourselves at home.

Liv leads them into a high ceiling living room with marble floors complete with a white fur rug and a massive TV/entertainment section.

LIV There's a bunch of pizza in the kitchen. You guys must be starving.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Liv and Adam lounge on different ends of a leather sectional couch, watching TV. Tyler is shoveling pizza into his mouth.

LIV So Tyler, have you lived in Boston your whole life?

TYLER (mouth full) Mhmm, yeah.

LIV That's so cool. I love Boston. I used to always go shopping on Newbury Street whenever my Dad had to go there for business. Do you live near there?

TYLER Umm, sort of. I live in South Boston.

LIV Ohhh Southie! That's awesome! Good Will Hunting is like my favorite movie ever!

Tyler smiles and nods, not knowing what to say.

Created using Celtx 35.

MRS. LINDERMAN, late 40s, walks into the living room. She is in great shape, but has had obvious work done on her face. She is surprised to see Adam and Tyler

MRS. LINDERMAN Liv, I didn't know you were having guests over.

LIV Mom, this is Adam. Remember I told you he was coming over?

ADAM Hi, Mrs. Linderman.

MRS. LINDERMAN Oh Adam! I didn't even recognize you! Come here.

Adam gets up and gives her a hug. She grabs his cheeks.

MRS. LINDERMAN Aww look at you. All grown up and so handsome!

ADAM Thanks, Mrs. Linderman. This is my friend, Tyler.

Tyler stands up to shake her hand.

TYLER Hi, nice to meet you.

MRS. LINDERMAN Hello.

Mrs. Linderman looks up and down at his ratty clothes and beat up sneakers, then shakes his hand dismissively. She turns back towards Liv.

MRS. LINDERMAN Oh, Liv honey, did you order pizza again?

LIV Yeah, I ordered a bunch for everyone.

MRS. LINDERMAN That's nice of you, but you know you can't keep eating all these fattening

foods. Your metabolism isn't going to keep you fit forever, trust me.

Liv rolls her eyes. Mrs. Linderman continues to passively criticize her, while maintaining a smile because the boys are there.

MRS. LINDERMAN And what are you wearing? Is this how you dress for company?

LIV Mom, this is just what I like.

MRS. LINDERMAN I don't know why your father and I spend so much money on nice clothes when you keep dressing like a homeless person.

LIV I literally never ask you guys to buy me anything. I like these clothes and I don't understand what's wrong with them.

MRS. LINDERMAN Liv, please can we not fight in front of your guests? I'm just trying to help you.

LIV Gee thanks, Mom. I'm forever grateful.

Mrs. Linderman turns to Adam, shaking her head but smiling somehow.

MRS. LINDERMAN I bet you don't talk to your mother like this do you, Adam?

Adam awkwardly laughs and shrugs his shoulders.

MRS. LINDERMAN Okay well I'm going to bed, but I just wanted to remind you to pack for tomorrow.

ADAM Where are you guys going?

Created using Celtx 37.

MRS. LINDERMAN We are going to the city to tour some grad programs for next year.

ADAM Oh that's exciting. (to Liv) What are you thinking of doing?

LIV I'm not--

MRS. LINDERMAN (excited) Graphic design. Liv is one of the best in her class and NYU is basically begging her to come there after graduation.

ADAM Heyy, look at you go. That's so exciting, congrats.

LIV Good night, Mom.

Mrs. Linderman shakes her head, frustrated.

MRS. LINDERMAN Well it was great seeing you, Adam. Goodnight you two.

She glares at Liv, then storms out of the room.

Liv, Adam and Tyler sit in awkward silence.

TYLER She seems nice.

Liv bursts out in laughter.

LIV You're funny.

TYLER I think I'm gonna go catch some air outside, I'll be right-

LIV I'll come with you. Fresh air sounds great.

Created using Celtx 38.

ADAM Same here.

Tyler is caught off guard, but Liv gets up and leads them out to the backyard.

EXT. BACKYARD - NIGHT

Liv, Adam and Tyler sit around a fire pit, passing a joint around. Liv is staring into the fire.

LIV

Adam talks, but Tyler barely listens because he is fixated on Liv.

ADAM So, I was thinking we should probably shoot for somewhere near Chicago tomorrow. It'll be a long day, but I think we should be able to do it.

TYLER (not paying attention) Okay, sounds good to me.

ADAM I went to Chicago once when I was little, but I don't really know where to go or any-

LIV I want to come with you guys.

Adam stops and turns to Liv, shocked.

ADAM I thought you were going with your mom tomorrow?

LIV I don't want to.

ADAM I feel like you should at least talk to your parents first.

LIV No. I'm going to do what I want and I want to go with you guys. Is that okay

Created using Celtx 39.

with you?

ADAM (chuckling) Your dad would straight up kill me if you-

TYLER Yes. Fine with us. You should come.

Adam turns to Tyler, in disagreement. Liv looks up from the fire and locks eyes with Tyler. She nods.

LIV Thank you.

ADAM Wait. Okay the car's already packed. There's no shot we'd even have enough space.

LIV That's totally fine. I pack light.

TYLER We'll make it work.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

It's early morning. Liv is perched on the corner of the couch with a backpack at her feet. Adam and Tyler stumble down the stairs, half asleep.

LIV Morning, boys. How'd you sleep?

ADAM Not too bad.

TYLER So great, that bed was so fucking comfortable.

LIV That's good, I'm glad. There's bagels in the kitchen if you're hungry.

ADAM Ooo bagels.

Adam hustles over to the kitchen counter. Tyler sits down

Created using Celtx 40. across from Liv.

TYLER You look ready to go.

LIV Mhmm, can't wait.

TYLER (points at the backpack) That's it?

LIV Told you I pack light.

Adam comes back in, eating a bagel.

ADAM Fucking unreal bagel.

LIV We should probably get going after you finish that, Adam. My mom's gonna be looking for me soon.

EXT. HOUSE - DAY

The three walk out of the house into the driveway, where Liv gives surprised reaction to the .

TYLER You know if it wasn't parked next to a Bentley it would look a lot better.

LIV No it's cool, I like it.

ADAM Yeah, she's got character that's for sure.

TYLER Alright how we doing this?

They all gaze at the already overflowing car.

INT. CAR - DAY

They are on the highway now. Adam is crammed against the window in the backseat, with bags packed all around him. Tyler drives while Liv eagerly sits shotgun.

Created using Celtx 41.

LIV You sure you don't want to sit up here?

ADAM (yelling) What? I can't hear with the windows back here.

LIV (yelling) I said, are you sure you don't want to sit up here? I don't need much space.

ADAM (yelling) Oh no, it's actually not that bad back here. It's kinda fun.

LIV If you say so.

TYLER (smirking) What a gentleman.

EXT. CAR - DAY

The sun is just starting set, and they are now driving by flat, open fields on either side of the car.

INT. CAR - DAY

Adam is now asleep in the crammed backseat, while Tyler drives with Liv in the passenger seat. She flips through static-filled radio stations.

LIV Ugh, there's no music stations here at all. Just this stupid talk radio.

TYLER What, you don't like talk radio?

LIV It's sooo boring. Why would I want to listen to some boring old man talk instead of listening to music?

TYLER I don't know sometimes it's kinda

Created using Celtx 42.

nice, ya know? They always have these crazy voices.

LIV Oh god, that's the worst part! Who actually talks like that? All radio DJs have sounded the same since the fifties.

TYLER I know its such throwback though. Theres this guy in Boston, Matty in the Morning, that's been doing it forever and he always talks about real shit which is nice.

LIV (laughing) You listen to him every morning?

TYLER Pretty much. Like the other day he was just roasting all the politicians from the debate earlier and I was losing it.

LIV Oh that's interesting. Do you keep up with politics?

TYLER Pssh. Fuck that, nah I just think it's hilarious when he makes fun of all their bullshit.

Suddenly, there is a loud BANG, as smoke begins to billow out from under the hood of the car.

TYLER FUCK, goddammit.

LIV (screaming) Oh my god!

Tyler pulls the car over onto the grass on the side of the road. Adam wakes up.

ADAM (yawning) Jeez, how long was I out for?

Created using Celtx 43.

Adam looks forward and sees the smoke.

ADAM Oh shit, well that's not good.

EXT. CAR - NIGHT

The car pulls off the road, and everyone quickly runs outside. The sun has just set, and it's beginning to get dark. They are in a flat field, next to a large tree.

Adam and Tyler frantically pour bottles of water on the hood of the car to cool it off. They eventually get the hood open and smoke billows out. They both cough and step back.

Liv stands by the tree, and watches nervously.

LIV Oh no! Be careful guys, that really doesn't look like something you should be breathing in.

TYLER (coughing) Trust me I've inhaled worse.

ADAM (also coughing) What are we supposed to do now. Where the fuck are we?

TYLER Fuck if I know, dude. (coughs and spits on the ground) Guess we gotta just wait it out for now, till it cools off at least.

Tyler walks over to the tree and sits down. He immediately takes out a cigarette and lights it. Adam and Liv look at each other then reluctantly join Tyler.

LIV (looking at her phone) Okay it looks like there's a town like a mile or so in that direction. (points) Not really sure what to do with that information, but there you go.

ADAM Wow the sky looks crazy over there.

Created using Celtx 44.

The last bit of red and yellow fill the sky before darkness sets in.

TYLER Ya know what? I actually came prepared for this shit.

He gets up and walks to the trunk of his car. Liv and Adam eagerly look from the tree.

Tyler takes out a metal suitcase, walks back over, and sits down in between them.

LIV Do you have something to fix the car?

ADAM Or maybe keys to a new car that's on its way?

TYLER (smiling) Nah not quite.

He spins the dial code on the handle and pops it open. Gold shines out onto their faces, like Pulp Fiction.

ADAM Jesus. Christ.

We see inside the suitcase, which is filled with plastic baggies, pill containers, and jars, all filled with various substances.

LIV (shocked) Oh my god! What is all that!?

TYLER So what happened was, a few years back, I heard this Triple A commercial talking about how everyone should have an emergency kit in their car in case some shit like this happens. (pause) I've never been much of a motor head so I started collecting some shit I could actually use.

Adam's wide eyes scan through the suitcase, scared but enchanted.

Created using Celtx 45.

ADAM So what the fuck is all of this?

TYLER A little of this, lil of that. Some fun stuff... some not so fun stuff.

LIV (still stunned) W- where did you even get all of this?

TYLER I'm a bit of a collector. I guess I just know a lot of different people.

Liv abruptly stands up and walks back towards the car. Adam is still mystified by the contents of the suitcase.

ADAM (to Tyler) So what are you going to do?

TYLER Well, I was going to recommend we all eat some of this.

He takes out a mason jar filled with magic mushrooms.

TYLER Just since the sky is looking pretty wild and it looks like we're gonna be hiking it. (looks up at Liv) Might not be for everyone though.

Adam takes the jar from Tyler and examines it in awe.

ADAM OHH are these mushrooms? I took these back in college when we went on a camping trip.

Liv paces back and forth, nervously.

ADAM I'm in. Let's do it. I haven't been able to do anything fun like this in years.

Tyler gets up and walks to Liv, while Adam continues staring at the drugs in the jar.

Created using Celtx 46.

TYLER You don't have to anything if you're not into this kinda stuff. We're gonna need someone to steer anyway while we push.

Liv stares at the ground. Then grins widely and looks back up at Tyler.

EXT. CAR - NIGHT

Adam and Tyler push the car down the dark, country road.

ADAM Oh yeah, here we go. I'm totally starting to feel something now.

TYLER (out of breath) That's fun.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

Liv sits in the drivers seat. She stares at her hands, which are not on the wheel, and touches the fabric on the passenger seat next to her.

TYLER (yells) Hey, Liv how we doin' up there?

Liv looks around to see where the voice is coming from. Then shrugs her shoulders and picks up her sunglasses.

The car begins to drift over the white line on the side of the road.

TYLER (yelling) Liv, you good?

LIV (whispering) Who said that?

TYLER (yelling) Say something, Liv.

EXT. CAR - NIGHT

Created using Celtx 47.

Liv sticks her head out the passenger side window. And looks back at Adam as he pushes the car.

LIV Oh hi, Adam. What's up?

Adam looks up at Liv, stands straight up and smiles ear to ear. He stops walking and waves to her as the car keeps moving.

ADAM Liv! Hey, I'm doing good. How are you?

The car rolls off the side of the road onto the grass. Tyler runs around up to the driver's window to check on Liv.

When he gets to the window, Liv sits in the passenger sit. Liv looks at Tyler and suddenly laughs hysterically. She puts her head in her hands and cannot stop her laugh. Tyler smiles and turns around to see Adam about 100 feet behind them

Tyler pauses for a second then breaks out in laughter. Adam sees this and sprints up the road. Liv gets out of the car, and they each stand on different sides of the car, laughing.

EXT. FIELD - NIGHT

The three sit around a weak makeshift fire made up of paper and sticks. They sit quietly and stare into the flames.

ADAM I used to watch a ton of survival shows on the Discovery Channel and they always used say fire was nature's TV. I never understood it until now. (pause) Who knew they were just tripping the whole time?

They all laugh, and Tyler gets up.

TYLER Next time I'm standing around one in a trash can, I'll have to remember that one.

Tyler walks out of frame, towards the car.

LIV Remember that time we went camping in Yosemite with both our families?

Created using Celtx 48.

ADAM I remember when I stayed in your R.V. for the whole week because my parents were arguing the whole time in mine.

LIV (nods) Well they're not here now. (pause) We're on our own now, and they can't do anything about it.

ADAM (smiling) You always did know what to say when to me when we were kids.

Adam looks passionately at Liv. She smiles sweetly then looks back up to see Tyler walk back to the circle. He holds a full bottle of whiskey and sits back down.

TYLER What we talking about?

Before Adam can say anything, Liv answers.

LIV Camping! Have you ever been?

TYLER Nah, I never understood sleeping outside.

LIV I totally understand that. I just always need my bed.

Tyler stares into the fire, forces a smile and nods. He then unscrews the bottle and takes a big swig. The smile leaves Liv's face and is replaced with a look of concern as she stares at Tyler. He dodges her eye contact.

ADAM (to Liv, excitedly) You remember the trip to Cooperstown too?

LIV Yep. I hate baseball.

Created using Celtx 49.

ADAM Oh I was all for the baseball part. I remember begging my dad for years to see the hall of fame.

LIV Mhmm.

Adam switches his gaze from Liv to the fire. She continues to try to read Tyler's face, as he takes another big swig of whiskey.

ADAM Course he had to leave the tour for a business call though.

LIV (shaking her head) Of course he did. (to Tyler) Is it safe to drink after we took that stuff?

TYLER Yeah, I always need to get some booze in my system so my brain doesn't wander off.

ADAM (to Liv) I think it's fine, I listened to some podcast about how shrooms are the safest drug in the world apparently.

Liv shakes her head and tries to catch Tyler's eyes while he shifts and looks around.

ADAM You know what? Fuck it. Pass me that shit.

Tyler passes the bottle to Adam, who throws it up to his mouth. Tyler lights a cigarette and jumps up. He looks down the road in the distance.

TYLER I can see some lights over there, that must be the town Liv was talking about. Whattaya say we ditch the car for the night and see what that's about.

Created using Celtx 50.

ADAM Hell yeah!

Adam stands up and hands the bottle back to Tyler.

TYLER We can probably find a motel or something for the night too.

Adam and Tyler both look at Liv, smiling hopefully. She looks up and reluctantly nods.

EXT. BAR - NIGHT

The small midwestern town has one "downtown" street with a few flashing streetlights. The town appears dead, except for the muffled MUSIC and TALKING from a small dive bar at the end of the street.

INT. BAR - NIGHT

The bar is dark and dirty. There are maybe 10 people scattered throughout. They look like blue collar factory workers or farmers.

There is a booth towards the back covered in ripped up red leather, with a heavily stained and beat up wooden table covered in beer bottles and cans

Adam and Liv sit on one side, with Tyler facing them. Adam is leaning close to Liv, who has faces straight ahead with her arms on the table. Tyler leans against the wall with his leg draped across the seat next to him and a beer in his hand. He and Adam are both visibly drunk.

ADAM Man, I love this place.

Adam looks down at the table and notices Liv's empty glass.

ADAM Oh shit, I think we all need another round, huh?

Tyler nods. Adam raises his hand up and looks towards the bar.

ADAM (loudly) 'scuse me. Could we get another round for me and my friends please?

Created using Celtx 51.

The BARTENDER is a tall, overweight man. He wears a flannel with the sleeves cut off tucked into his blue jeans, complete with a gold star belt buckle and a dirty American flag baseball cap.

He walks over to the table carrying two beers and a rum and coke. He places the drinks down on the table.

ADAM (slurring) Thank you very much, good sir. And thank you for letting us enjoy your lovely town.

BARTENDER 2 You got it, chief.

LIV Hey, do you know any place near here we could stay the night? We're not picky. We'll take anything that has beds.

BARTENDER 2 Well, there's a Motel 6 up the street, and I know they've always got vacancies.

LIV Oh okay. Thanks.

BARTENDER 2 Or you folks could go to the Inn up the street. My wife's family runs the place, and they'd probably love to take care of you for the night.

LIV Wow thank you so much. That sounds great.

BARTENDER 2 Sure thing, sweetheart. It might not be what you folks are used to, but just tell em Billy sent you and they'll set you up real nice.

ADAM Oh thanks man, that's really nice of you.

Created using Celtx 52.

Billy nods and turns to Tyler as he walks away.

BARTENDER 2 Sorry chief, no feet on the seats.

Tyler ignores him, and looks around the bar. Billy stops and faces him.

BARTENDER 2 Hey buddy, feet gotta be on the floor in here.

Tyler drunkenly looks up at him.

TYLER Fuck did you say to me?

LIV Tyler, just put your feet down.

Tyler glares over at her then returns his gaze back up to the bartender.

BARTENDER 2 Feet off the booth, or I gotta throw you outta here, buddy.

TYLER (chuckling) Buddy? Really? Do I look like your fucking buddy?

Tyler slowly puts his feet down and turns back towards Adam and Liv. The bartender shakes his head and walks back behind the bar.

ADAM What the fuck was that, man? That guy just got us a place to stay.

Tyler looks over at the bar, smiling. He takes out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his pocket.

LIV Tyler. You can't smoke in here. He's going to kick us out.

Tyler taps the pack on the table a few times, takes one out and puts it in his mouth.

Created using Celtx 53.

ADAM Dude! Fucking stop.

Tyler lights the cigarette, leans against the wall and puts both feet up on the booth. He tilts his head back against the wall and exhales smoke. The bartender stares from behind the bar.

BARTENDER 2 That's it. He's gotta go.

ADAM I'm really sorry about him, he just had a few too many. We'll get him out of here.

LIV Sorry!

Adam and Liv hop up and try to pull Tyler out of the booth.

TYLER What's wrong guys? I'm just trying to have some fun with my buddy.

Adam grabs Tyler and gets him to stand up. He pushes him towards the door, out of the bar. Liv stays in the doorway and yells back to the bartender.

LIV I'm really sorry again. Thank you so much for everything.

EXT. BAR - NIGHT

Adam stumbles outside with his arm around Tyler. Tyler throws Adam's arm off of him and pushes him away.

TYLER What the fuck was that shit? Don't fucking tell me what to do.

Adam freezes in shock.

ADAM What do you mean? You're the one that got us kicked out.

Liv walks out of the bar.

Created using Celtx 54.

TYLER You two think you fucking know everything. You college educated fucks don't know shit about nothing. You can't tell me shit.

LIV Please get out of the street. Let's just start walking to inn and we all just calm down.

Adam nods and they walk up the street. Tyler follows behind and mumbles to himself.

Tyler slows down to light a cigarette. Liv and Adam continue to walk and talk. Tyler looks up at them, and puts the pack back in his pocket. Suddenly, he turns and sprints back towards the bar.

ADAM I don't know I just never really thought I could pull off a cut off like that, but now I kinda want to grab some of my old flannels and-

Liv turns to see that Tyler is gone.

LIV Oh no.

ADAM Ohhh shit. Where did he go?

LIV (rolls her eyes) Where do you think?

ADAM (drunkenly thinking) The bar! Oh no that's bad. What do we do now?

Liv turns and continues the same way they were going.

LIV We go to the Motel 6.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - DAY

Adam wakes up and frantically looks around, confused. He is on the carpeted floor wrapped sheet with a pillow beside his

Created using Celtx 55. head.

Liv is sitting up at the head of the bed, calmly looking out the window. The hotel room is small and dingy. There is a bed, an ancient T.V. set and a dirty window that barely lets the morning sun in.

Adam grabs his head in pain.

ADAM What the fuck happened last night? Where are we?

LIV Indiana. We're in Valparaiso, Indiana.

ADAM (confused) Wait. Where's Tyler?

Liv sighs and shakes her head, then stands up.

LIV You boys are really something. Come on. Let's go get him out.

Liv walks out of the room. Adam hurries to get his clothes on and hops out the door after her.

EXT. POLICE STATION - DAY

Adam and Liv walk down the street, Liv turns and walks up the steps of a small brick building with a big black sign that says: VALPARAISO INDIANA POLICE DEPARTMENT

ADAM Wait, are you absolutely sure he actually went to jail?

LIV Where else could he have ended up?

INT. POLICE STATION - DAY

Liv walks in and struts to the front desk, where a WOMAN in her 50s sits hunched over with her head down.

The police station is old and very small. There is just a desk with a couple on the wall next to it and a narrow hallway. The walls are blue, with pictures of police officers on them.

Created using Celtx 56.

Adam tepidly steps in behind Liv. She steps up to the desk and clears her throat to get the woman's attention. The woman is wearing a floral patterned blouse with a name tag that ready BETH, complete with reading glasses on the end of her nose. She raises her head with an attitude.

RECEPTIONIST Can I help you?

LIV Hi! I think my friend might have ended up here last night.

She looks down at the papers in front of her.

RECEPTIONIST Mmm oh yeah. I think we've got him. Tyler Shanahan?

She gets up and walks down the hallway. Then returns after a few moments with Tyler. His face is cut up and bruised with a black eye. Adam and Liv gasp as he walks in.

ADAM Holy shit, man.

LIV Oh my god.

RECEPTIONIST Alright, get him the hell out of here.

LIV That's it? I don't have to fill anything out or anything?

RECEPTIONIST I suggest you people leave our town.

Liv nods her head and Tyler walks over to Adam.
