This collected edition also features two other stories that are essentially one-shots. The first is a direct epilogue to the last collection and the other is a return to the Age of Apocalypse and sets Uncanny X- Force: Otherworld Vol. 5 an ongoing set in that bleak universe. So for whatever reason, they decide that a single murder by a single member of th This is the story of a gang who meant to have a three-hour tour of a lovely New Zealand- esque dimension known as the Outworlds, where Captain Britain that obscure and rather hard-to-take superhero leads a whole pantheon of family members to defend every dimension in existence from everything harmful. So for whatever reason, they decide that a single murder by a Uncanny X-Force: Otherworld Vol. 5 member of the mutant death squad is simply egregious, and on the merits of that murder alone they should try that one mutant for the crime. Out of the millions of deaths in just the dimension alone, this one warrants the attention of multiple of the Braddock family for an extended period? And especially, they chose to spare the time for this trial, months after the crime, while the Outworlds are being besieged by some lunatic goat- headed wizard and his undead army? Lemme stop right here and emphasize that I love this story - it's got weird, lushly grotesque scenery, bizarre characters, great dialogue and a series of conflicts that makes me genuinely worried for the heroes' ability to triumph.

Sonny Liew T h e world might not be flat like what New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas Friedman has suggested, but it is definitely smaller today with globalization and the advancement of communication technologies. The internet and email have shortened the distance between Southeast Asia and the West, and the development has helped more comic artists in this region in making headway in the American comic books industry. The leading examples are Malaysians Billy Tan (The Uncanny X-Men), Tan Eng Huat {The Doom Patrol), and Singapore-based Sonny L i e w (Malinky Robot/My Faith In Frankie). He initially majored in business in the US, but stayed on after his studies to pursue his childhood dream of being a comic book artist. He received his break when he tried Top Cow's talent search programme for new comic book artists, and struck gold when they gave him a drawing assignment in 1994. The rest is history and now Tan is helming the popular X-Men series for Marvel Comics, an indication that he has definitely hit the big time. Over at DC Comics, it was editor Andy Heifer who spotted the talent of Tan Eng Huat at a Hong Kong comics convention in 1999, and saw the potential of this young talent.

    READING THE UNCANNY X­MEN: GENDER, RACE, AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY American Studies 2011 ABSTRACT READING THE UNCANNY X­MEN: GENDER RACE AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski The first superhero comic book was published in 1938 and since that time the genre has become a staple of American popular culture. While superhero stories have been adapted into every popular storytelling medium, the genre is most closely associated with the comic book industry. This dissertation examines the first 500 issues of The Uncanny X­Men, one of the most popular series to be published in America. In particular, the portrayals of race and gender will be analyzed by performing a close reading of the stories published as well as a numerical analysis of the ethnicity, nationality, and gender of the heroes, villains, and guest stars who appear in the series. The X‐Men comic book franchise has a reputation among fans, creators, and scholars as one of the most diverse and progressive superhero comic book titles. The core conceit of the series, that there are people called mutants who are born with powers and abilities that separate them from normal humans, has allowed the themes of societal prejudice and hatred to be explored in a metaphorical fashion, though looking closely at the race and gender of the characters in the series reveals a different reality than the common perception of the series.
