WAIMAK WHISPER ISSUE 4 , AUGUST 2014 BOARD NEWS Hi Everyone, Board news. We have not had a formal meeting since the last newsletter, instead we have started our Strategic Planning with data from our survey. A couple of things have popped up that we can clarify right away. Kendall Park. Just to clarify some misconceptions around this park. It is owned by the Waimakariri District Council (WDC) and the club pay a nominal annual rental to them for the clubhouse. The new artificial turf being constructed here is owned by the WDC and the club/members will have to pay a fee to play and train on it (yet to be agreed) We had no say in where it has been located. The only expense incurred by the club for this project is the purchase of some covered player dugouts and the removal of our lights. As far as the drainage problems with Kendall, we have been talking with the WDC all year. The latest information we have is that the WDC have budgeted $1.5m to do an engineering/drainage plan for Kaiapoi/Ohoka as a whole. Until this is completed we are going to have ongoing problems, so everyone needs to have some patience as there is no quick fix. This also means we will probably have no lights on the grass for training next year as well. Please be assured we are in constant touch with the WDC to find a solution. We also had some comments regarding club culture. So we have re-visited our values and beliefs based on what you told us; • We believe….. 1. That all members are unique and they have the right to reach their full potential. 2. That Waimakariri United Football has a vital role in the community. 3. That the community has a vital role in the life of the club. 4. That our volunteers are our greatest resource. 5. Every child should be in a safe and positive environment. 6. This has been a long term problem within the club and with the depth of juniors coming through we will soon be able to offer the coaches this depth hopefully. The PDL side continued to grow week by week and held there own every week, great effort boys. Our Presidents grade side look to finish in the middle part of their competition. TEAM PROFILE The Mighty Albion After a number of years (too many to count!) of playing at Masters 35’s a decision to finally play at Masters 45’s was taken by the group in the close season. We all used to play together 12 years ago as Rangiora City and Rangiora United and then became Waimak Wanderers a few years ago. This year we became the 45’s and renamed ourselves ‘The Albion’ due to our Captain coming via Romania to West Bromwich in the darkest West Midlands of England. We have welcomed back some players from our past Division 1 competitive days such as Nick ‘Skinny’ Hampson and Billy ‘Bench’ Williamson and have gone on to dominate the league this season. We have already won the league-loosing only 1 game all year and are currently undefeated in the Cup. We look forward to repeating our previous successes at the South Island Masters and New Zealand Masters comp’s coming up –both of which we have also previously won. Most of our squad will be familiar to Waimak through coaching many teams at Rangiora, Kaiapoi , North Can- terbury and Waimak over the last 10 years. It is great that we are all still playing, still competitive and still proud of our past. (We even have a couple of Kiwi’s playing for us this year! Ron Van Til) PAGE 5 MAINLAND, Mainland Football girls performing on the World stage! The Junior Football Ferns made history on Thursday, becoming the first New Zealand women’s AGE-GROUP side to qualify for the knockout stages of a FIFA tournament.
