PLAYING CAREER • Established himself as one of San Diego’s all-time fan favorites with his hustle and all-out play, while spending entire 10-year Major League career with Padres (1979-89). • Was honored in 2003 as one of top 35 players in Padres history...batted .255 over 972 big league games, 4th-most in Padres history...only , Garry Templeton and Dave Winfield have logged more games in Friars uniform. • Made ML debut Sept. 3, 1979 vs. San Francisco, going 1-for-3 with RBI as San Diego’s leadoff hitter...delivered RBI- off Giants’ for 1st big league ... remained in Majors for good begin- ning in 1982, when he batted .264 over 122 games...hammered 1st ML home April 26, 1983 at , solo clout off Cubs’ Chuck Rainey...played major role off bench for Padres’ -winning club in 1984, hitting at .273 clip over 86 games...in Game 5 of NLCS at San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium, hit ground ball that skipped past Cubs 1st base- man and ignited 4-run, 7th-inning rally that clinched Padres’ 1st-ever NL title...in lone World Series at-bat, collected pinch-hit single in Game 4 at Detroit... established then-club record in 1986 with .993 fielding pct. at 2nd base. A GIANT IN COMMUNITY • Has been very involved, along with late wife, Lori, with Organ Donor Network, working with that organization and Stanford Medical Center in raising awareness of need for organ and tissue donors. • Lori and Mark also created Step to the Plate Foundation, which helps families of transplant recipients. • Has hosted Mark Gardner Invitational Golf Tournament since 1993 to raise funds for Fresno area charities, along with Step to the Plate Foundation. • Donates money to Garth Brooks’ Teammates for Kids Foundation, supports California’s Responsible Fatherhood Campaign with special visits and other work. • Has joined children at Make-a-Wish Foundation’s reception at AT&T Park. • Has spoken to youth at Little League Day each of last 6 years at AT&T Park, while also attending San Francisco AAA High School championship game held at ballpark. • Lent time to Giants Community Fund charity golf outings. • Participated in last 4 Giants Clinics, teaching baseball basics to disabled children. • Was spokesperson for MLB’s 2005 Pitch, Hit and Run program. • Was highly active in Genentech’s Strike Out Cancer program in 2004, doing radio and television interviews, along with taping PSA, to create awareness and promote program. • Participated in organization’s Strike Out Cancer Day at AT&T Park. • Attended reception to promote Giants Wives’ Cookbook, produced to benefit Giants Community Fund. PLAYING CAREER • Enjoyed solid 14-year Major League playing career, compiling lifetime .290 avg. with 241 2Bs, 124 HRs, 585 RBI and 235 steals over 1,337 games. • Saw big league action with (1987-92 and 2000), (1993-94), (1994), (1995), Dodgers (1995), Twins (1996-97), (1997) and (1998-99). • Was All-Star selection in each league, representing Yankees in 1992 and Reds in 1993. • Advanced to post season on 4 occasions, batting .294 (10-for-34) in 10 LDS games with Dodgers (1995), Mariners (1997) and Rangers (1998-99). • Became just 5th player in storied history of Yankees franchise to record at least 20 HRs and 20 SBs in season, accomplishing feat in 1991. • Was career .312 hitter (496-for-1,589) off left-handed pitching. COACHING CAREER • Former big leaguer will enter his 2nd season of profes- sional coaching in 2011, serving as hitting coach. • In his 1st year as hitting coach for Giants last season he helped tutor offense to .257 batting average (1,411-for- 5,488), which ranked 7th in NL...SF scored 697 runs (9th- most in NL), an increase of 40 from 2009 and averaged 4.30 runs per game, 9th-best in league. • Was -A hitting coach for 2009 , guid- ing team to 6th-highest batting average in with .275 mark. • Pair of Grizzlies’ batters placed in top 10 for highest bat- ting avg. in PCL with leading league with .342 clip and Jesus Guzman placing 5th with .321 mark... after minor league season concluded, he joined Giants and worked as an assistant during September. • Prior to joining SF’s organization, was triple-A hitting coach for of organization from 2005-08. • Was part of coaching staff for Bluefield, Baltimore’s advanced rookie team in Appalachian League from 2003-04. A GIANT IN THE COMMUNITY • Has been extremely active in community activities during his 13 seasons with Giants, participating in variety of outreach programs. • Has led efforts to raise additional funds and awareness for Junior Giants Baseball Program and Comfort for Kids, which provides specialized medical care to children throughout Bay Area who are facing life-threatening ill- ness, by organizing post-game clinic on field at AT&T Park for kids ages 8-12. • Has been active in Giants Community Fund Golf Tournament. • Has participated in both Junior Giants Coaches Day and Junior Giants Life Skills clinic at ballpark last 7 years, teaching baseball basics while providing kids with valu- able life lessons...has also helped promote 1st 2 editions of Giants Wives’ cookbook, which benefits Giants Community Fund. • Is annual participant in KNBR/Giants Winter FanFest. • Donated fielding clinic to 2005 Giants Wives’ on-line auction. • Was part of Giants’ 1st ever holiday party at AT&T Park in Dec. 2001, taking more than 150 homeless children on shopping spree at Giants Store. • Participates in Giants Summer Reading Program, encouraging Bay Area children to read.
