East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club Candidate Questionnaire

Thank you for your interest in obtaining an endorsement from the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club.

Per the Club’s bylaws, to be eligible for endorsement, a candidate must be a registered Democrat. All candidates must also complete this candidate questionnaire to be considered for an endorsement. Endorsements are decided by the general membership, and candidates must receive at least 60% of votes cast to be endorsed.

The deadline to return your completed questionnaire to [email protected] is Monday, January 6th at 11:59pm for the January 15, 2020 East Bay Stonewall endorsement meeting for the March 2020 presidential primary election. Any candidate submitting an application after the deadline will not appear on the ballot.

1. Are you a registered Democrat? If so, how long have you been registered as a Democrat? Have you ever been registered with another party and if so, when and for how long?

Yes. I have been a registered Democrat and active within the party for my entire adult life. I was naturalized as a U.S. citizen at the age of 17 and eagerly voted for the first time at 18 in the 2002 midterm election as a newly registered Democrat.

2. Are you a member of the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club? If so, for how long? If not, have you participated in club activities, supported or contributed to the Club in some other way? What other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organizations are you affiliated with and in what capacity? What other non-LGBT Democratic clubs are you affiliated with?

Yes. I have been a member for at least seven years and possibly longer. I am also the National Committeeperson, Former Vice President of Membership, and Former Bay Area Regional Director for California Young Democrats, an Alternate Member to Dr. Bonnie Wheatley and Legislation Committee Chair for the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee, an Executive Board Representative, Resolutions Committee Executive Board Representative, and Former Legislation Committee Member of the California Democratic Party; President Emeritus of East Bay Young Democrats, and a Member of the John George Democratic Club, Asian Pacific Alameda County Democratic Caucus, Black Young Democrats of the East Bay, South Alameda County Young Democrats, Berkeley Democratic Club, and the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club. In my capacities in the county and state party, I have advocated for numerous pro-LGBTQ legislative items, and as the Bay Area Chapter Council and Legislative Liaison for Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, I have helped to organize opposition to LGBTQ bigotry by the Trump Administration and Republicans in Congress.

3. Using specific examples, please identify the causes you have advocated for and the ways you have helped advance LGBT rights or otherwise helped foster a community of inclusivity for LGBT individuals and families.

I fought vigorously for marriage equality (even taking time off my own Rent Board Campaign in 2008 to go to Livermore with my LGBT campaign manager to put up “No on 8” signs next to the “Yes on 8” signs in Livermore in the final days of that campaign) and was obviously thrilled when marriage equality finally became the law of the land five years later.

Since then, I have focused on other issues, such as combating the Bay Area’s housing and homelessness crisis, which disproportionately affects people who are LGBT. In 2012, I helped successfully stave off Berkeley Measure S, which would have criminalized the act of sitting on the sidewalk in commercial district during certain hours. Since then I have been an active member of the Berkeley Homelessness task Force, through which I have come up with proactive solutions to combat homelessness in a human way. My efforts led to the exploration of the City’s acquisition of vacant properties and lots for the purpose of providing low-income and transitional housing opportunities and sites for Tiny Homes. As Immediate Past Chair of the Berkeley Housing Advisory Commission and current Vice Chair of the Berkeley Measure O ($135M Affordable Housing Bond Oversight) Committee, my efforts led to the funding of millions of dollars from our Housing Trust Fund towards the creation of new very low-income housing and the rehabilitation of existing, aging housing stock that houses low-income families and individuals, including prominent members of the LGBT community.

4. Have you previously supported LGBT candidates for office and if yes, did that include financial support?

I have supported numerous LGBTQ candidates for office, including but Jovanka Beckles for AD-15, Ricardo Lara for Insurance Commissioner, Vicky Kolakowski and Tara Flanagan for Judge, Gabriel Quinto for El Cerrito City Council, Kriss Worthington for Berkeley City Council, John Bauters for Emeryville City Council, James Chang for Berkeley Rent Board, Rebecca Saltzman for BART Board, Joaquin Rivera for the Alameda County Board of Education, Cesar Zepeda for Richmond City Council, and Marguerite Young and Andy Katz for EBMUD Board. My support has almost always come with financial and volunteer support as well for all of these races and others.

5. Who are your LGBT endorsers? Who are your LGBT supporters?

My LGBT endorsers presently include Oakland City Council President Rebecca Kaplan, El Cerrito Council Member Gabriel Quinto, Dublin City Council Member Shawn Kumagai, Berkeley School Board Director Judy Appel, California Young Democrats (CYD) President Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, ACDCC Vice Chair Andy Kelley, ACDCC AD15 Vice Chair George Perezvelez, ACDCC candidate Bobbi Lopez, Contra Costa Wastewater District Board Member Cesar Zepeda, AD15 ADEM Delegate, Northern CA Vice Chair CDP LGBT Caucus, and CYD Black Caucus Chair Devin Murphy. I hope to add others to this list soon.

6. What do you hope to accomplish if you are elected? Please outline your top three policy goals or objectives and how you intend to achieve them.

1. Affordable Housing for ALL 2. A Green New Deal for our nation, state, and Alameda County 3. Immigrant Rights

I will accomplish this by continuing what I’ve done for the last nine years on the ACDCC and CDP. As the founding Legislation Chair of the ACDCC, I bring good housing bills for the ACDCC’s endorsement on a monthly basis and ensure that our letters of support end up before California’s Congressional, State Senate, and Assembly delegations. As a CDP Executive Board Member and Co-Chair of the Resolutions Committee, I ensure that we pass resolutions on important topics, which is how I was able to help ensure that affordable housing policies and rent control are enshrined in the Party’s platform, adopted resolutions, and endorsed legislation and ballot measures. I will continue to work with all of you to ensure that our shared priorities not only achieve the Party’s support, but that the ACDCC continues to be a blue bastion that moves all of California in a more progressive direction. 7. What makes you uniquely qualified for the office and how are you different or unique from the other candidates in your race? I have a lot of respect for the other candidates, but several considerations set me apart:

1. I am the most pro-labor candidate running, and I’ve worked within our party to build our bench and make us more inclusive, diverse, and progressive. I’ve joined the picket lines when no one was looking, and I’ve used my positions of influence to fight for strong project labor agreements and local hire provisions. I am also the proven Democrat in this race, someone who has long fought to make our region and state adopt policies that reflect my progressive values. That record will continue on the ACDCC.

2. I work tirelessly and bring my background as an elected official into this role. I listen to everyone, but I’m unbought. I have collaborated closely with a number of Democratic clubs in Alameda County, including Stonewall Democrats of the East Bay, and have supported the organization in countless ways.

3. Experience matters. The Democratic Party has endorsed literally hundreds of progressive bills through my leadership, including a number focused on expanding health care access, improving worker conditions, and combating hate. I’ve walked picket lines, chaired multiple commissions, and spoken before City Councils and other public bodies hundreds of times. I’ve a proven leader, and you know who you’ll get if I’m elected.
