THE BROOKLYNBOROUGH PRESIDENT'S OFFICE AND BROOKLYNACADEMY OF MUSIC ANNOUNCETHE CREATIONOF A NEY PRESENTINGORGANIZATION: 651

Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden and Harvey Lichtenstein, President and Executive Producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) have announced the creation of a new not-for-profit presenting organization based at the BAMMajestic Theater. 651, which is the corporation's name as well as its Fulton Street address, will operate as an organization independent from Brooklyn Academy of Music, complete with a separate board of directors .

The formation of 651 fulfills a commitment made by BAMand the Borough President when the Majestic Theater reopened in 1987. That commitment was to encourage and support programming that celebrated the cultural diversity of the borough and the city. The relationship between 651 and BAM is unique among cultural institutions in New York. Apart from an outright grant from the Academy in support of 651 programs, BAMas 65l's parent organization has and will continue to offer professional assistance and advice in the areas of fundraising, marketing, promotion and technical support. The Fund for the Borough of Brooklyn, a not-for-profit corporation that promotes Brooklyn's cultural resources, will also continue to provide administrative and financial services for the new corporation.

65l's first season, which runs from May 6 through June 18, will be a series of concert evenings designed to evoke specific times, places, styles and sounds. This year the programs will focus on the artists and art forms that have affected the life of a particular segment of the American community and, subsequently, the art and culture of America . The subject matter ranges from the battle of the swing bands at the Savoy Ballroom to the organ trios at the Town Hill supper club and the mambo sound of The Palladium in the 1940s.

"The very design of the BAMMajestic Theater lends itself to this type of programming . The line between audience and performer is blurred and a feeling of community is created within the theater walls," said Harvey Lichtenstein. "We are very excited about what 651 is setting out to do in the Majestic and we welcome it not only as an addition to the Brooklyn cultural scene, but as a model partnership for other cultural institutions everywhere."

Howard Golden remarked, "The City's contribution to the BAMMajestic Theater and 651 has helped to create a major artistic facility that will be enjoyed by all of Brooklyn's communities. It is an important step in our effort to establish a new 'Arts District' in Downtown Brooklyn that includes office and rehearsal space in the recently renovated Strand Theater next door."

Assemblyman Roger Green, who represents the 57th Assembly District, is actively seeking support for 651 at the state level, and said , "Realizing the importance that art plays in the lives of people, we are proud to be associated with the birth of an organization that will address the diverse culture of Brooklyn's population."

Mikki Shepard and Leonard Goines, 65l's producers, come to the project as they complete a three-year independent study of the development of new audiences for cultural programs. 'While preparing to launch 65l's first season from their office at 651 Fulton Street in the BAMMajestic Theater, they offered the following thought: "In our travels we've realized that there is a need for arts organizations to be just as creative in how they present and administer art as the artists creating the work itself . 65l's partnership with BAM begins to address this issue."

65l's premiere season is made possible in part by Brooklyn Union Gas, the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and The Fund for the Borough of Brooklyn. Support has also been provided by the Brooklyn Academy of Music through the generosity of New York Telephone, The Reed Foundation and the New York Community Trust .

"651", a not-for-profit organization devoted to presenting programs that celebrate the cultural diversity of New York City, presents Blue Lights in the Basement, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Opera House on Saturday June 16, at 4:00 and 8:00 PM. The concert will feature the soul music of Jerry Butler, Curtis Mayfield, and The Impressions. Due to the evening performance selling-out two months in advance, a 4:00 .PM performance has been added.

Soul music has always been able to capture the mingled sensations of joy and sorrow; dipping to despair and heartbreak at one moment and rising to the joyous celebrations of life the next. Popularized in the 1960's, this form of music was heard not only at live performances, but was "the music" heard at private parties, often held in people's basements. Among the most popular exponents of this musical form were Jerry Butler, The Impressions and Curtis Mayfield. These artists will join together for the first time in 20 years in New York in a live concert to recreate the sounds of "the basement."

If a legend is defined as "one popularly accepted as being historical" then Jerry Butler, must surely qualify. Butler is the recipient of two Billboard awards, was nominated for three Grammy awards and has sold over thirty million records, eight of which went gold. In a career that has spanned over thirty years, Butler has toured both nationally and internationally, been an advocate in the civil rights mo,,ement, and has become a successful businessman and politician.

Ever since his teenage years Curtis Mayfield has been a dynamic force in soul music. Mayfield has worked as a singer, composer, guitarist and producer, combining with Jerry Butler and The Impressions to record such hits as "For Your Precious Love." Having gone solo in 196 :B, Mayfield became a successful writer and producer -- writing the film scores for "Superfly" and "Claudine", and producing Aretha Franklin'~; 1978 album "Almighty Fire", among other projects. Mayfield continues to be involved in the music world and records regularly on the CRC label. more ...

"651" -- BROOKLYN'SNEW PRESENTING ORGANIZATION PRESENTS THE COLTRANELEGAC Y A CONCERTCELEBRATING JAZZ-GREAT JOHN COLTRANE Saturday May 19, 1990 8:00 PM

"651", a not-for-profit organization devoted to presenting programs that celebrate the cultural diversity of New York City , presents The Coltrane Legacy. at the BAM Majestic Theater on Saturday May 19 at 8 : 00 PM. In this concert, jazz masters Reggie Workman, Andrew White , Sonny Fortune , Billy Harper , Odean Pope, Stanle y Cowell and Ronnie Burrage, who performed with or were influenced by John Coltrane, pay homage to his musical genius in performances of selected Coltrane solos and other compositions.

John Coltrane possessed one of the most dazzling instrumental techniques in the history of jazz & gave us sounds that ranged from the raw, pulsating passion of Giant Steps to the peaceful, mystical lyricism of A Love Supreme . Since John Coltrane's Death almost 23 years ago (July 17, 1967), the Coltrane legacy has continued to flourish in terms of its musical contribution and importance to the jazz industry. From the so called "sheets of sound" to his flirtations with free . group improvisation and the use of Indian improvisational practices, he blended these newer concepts with distillations of older forms . Coltrane first attracted universal attention from musicians during his intermittent association with Miles Davis between 1955 and 1960 . In 1960 Coltrane formed his own quartet and won widespread public recognition with his album My Favorite Things . From the late 1950's Coltrane had a tremendous effect on younger saxophonists . Since that time Coltrane's style of playing has directly influenced generations of improvisers . These include those who attempted to play in his style and those who used his expanded freedom to reach toward music of their own .

Reggie Workman , bass , and Program Coordinator for the Coltrane Legacy, has earned his credentials by perform i ng with many of jazz's greatest artists , including John Coltrane , Miles Davis, Herbie Mann and Max Roach. Workman has been the leader of the Reggie Workman Quartet and the Top Shelf Ensemble.

Due to his extensive association with the "Coltrane legacy", Saxophonist Andrew White has been dubbed "The world's leading authority on the music of John Coltrane" and in the field of music education he is called "The Keeper Of The Trane". A superb composer/arranger , White is an extreme l y versatile musician; having played oboe for the American Ballet Theatre of New York, saxophone with the Beaver Harris Allstars and electric bass for Stevie Wonder and the Fifth Dimension.
