gunshot 9 SPORTING CLAY OCEANIA CHAMPIONSHIPS Sixteen N.Z. shooters made it to Renmark-Berri (2½ hrs North-East from Adelaide) for the 22nd Oceania Sporting Clay tournament. Fortunately to reach Renmark you have to travel through (well near it anyway) the famous Barossa Valley and some of us took full advantage of the wine tours and tasting for a few days preceding the event. Two soft practice fields, set purposely to trap the unwary, were set up for Friday with competition commencing on Saturday for three days. The set up was eight (old style) par cours each one of 25 targets from four shooting stands, Saturday and Sunday you shot three par cours each day, and Monday NZ Junior Team takes 2nd place two, totalling 200 targets. The opening ceremony was a little disappointing for us as everyone of us was in No.1’s (several wearing poppies as a mark of respect for ANZAC weekend, appreciated by some Aussies). After the superb Maori welcome and challenge in Rotorua for the last Oceania, we thought the Aussies would try to top that, no flags of nations, no national anthems and as is normal a small gift to shooters was missing. One can only imagine they were still getting over the incredible efforts they had put in for the World Champs last year and were still recovering from all that work. On the other hand though they threw all manner of targets at us and being a relatively flat ground, employed towers, cherry pickers, high stands and speed. One stand had a 20 New Zealand Open Team 2nd meter cherry picker which was 76 meters from the stand, the target was on edge and driven down landing 50 odd meters to your right. Probably a 60 meter plus target. Most of the guys seemed to handle it ok, shooting three or four out of the menu. I think it was the ‘biggest’ target there, but every trap was either tilted over, had the spring wound right up or had the targets doing a couple of things in the air, making them very tricky and hard to read. As usual we were made to feel very welcome with the usual banter and bull…. filling up the down time, catering and refreshments were up to the normal Aussie standard and most probably put on a pound or two. Two of the N.Z. shooters departed from the norm this year and had camper vans, one unfortunately seemed to be in all sorts of strife most of the time, and poor Ian Swale NZ Super Veterans team takes 2nd place had erected his awning only to have the

Some of us went for a second night when the Aussies booked it out and it seemed to become an engagement party for Carla Battistella and Jeff Zammitt. Jeff who incidentally on talking to Ray Bishop about duck shooting, immediately booked a ticket to N.Z. for opening weekend. They were in my squad and what a great couple, Carla has been following Jeff around for a while and has now started shooting, even shooting a 20/25 which a lot of experienced shooters couldn’t match. David Alley and Thomas Bishop were top New Zealanders home overall each on 164/200, followed by our other two NZ Veterans team takes 2nd place (L-R) Ron Madden, Ian Swale, Neil Winsloe juniors, James Canard and James Rastick. Thomas Bishop, only a young junior with many more years before moving into seniors, is making junior sporting shooting very healthy indeed. Add to that the two James’s gaining international experience, things are looking good. They were shooting well, and finished on 157/200 a piece, and what a thrill it was to see the two boys foot it on those big shoot off targets in front of an appreciative gallery. Sox Pilipasidis won the event on 183; current World FITASC Champion Damien Birgan was second one target behind on 182. In other classes, juniors took 2nd, 3rd. and 4th. Thomas Bishop second outright and James Rastrick over James Canard in a shoot off. Graham Brown (148/200) won Super Vets with Gordon MacPhee 3rd. SS 1011 Gunshot Ad 1/2 H.indd 1 15/04/10 9:32 AM 12 gunshot Aussie Skeet champs Eleven New Zealand shooters attended the 2010 Australian Skeet National Championships at Wagga. The week’s events were conducted in fine, calm, late autumn weather. Each day started with a “black frost” and then blue sky days. Some Aussies commented it was the best weather ever experienced for the Skeet Nationals. For the Kiwis, the highlight of the week came on Friday - National Skeet Championship day. Three possible went into the shoot off after the 100 target match. At station 4 in the first shoot off round, Tony Truss from Rotorua shot the station clean, placing all the pressure on the only other shooter left in the shoot off - Leigh Roberts of Australia. Leigh missed his low target on station four handing Tony Truss the National Australian Skeet title. This was a fantastic achievement and Tony’s performance was another example of his cool and calm shooting despite the high pressure circumstances. The Aussie crowd was silenced. Immediately following Tony’s win, the Australia vs New Zealand Glenn Trophy event was held. Tony’s shoot off win set the atmosphere for this teams event with the Aussie team struggling to keep composure and the Kiwi team pushing along with a good score. The end result was a New Zealand victory by seven targets with Tony and Dave Da Silva leading the Kiwis home with possible 50s in the Glenn Trophy match. The other NZ team scores were Clark Pirie (49), Kelvin Gutsell (48) and Ray Everett (46). This victory was an extremely pleasing result after losing the Glenn Trophy to Australia at the NZ Skeet Nationals in November 2009. Continued on page 44

gunshot 47 TAURANGA CLUB CHAMPS The first round of the Tauranga Clay Target Club’s championships was held 4th April in ideal conditions. There was a turnout of 43 shooters vying for the three trophies available. With lots of red on the score board there were shoot offs required in all events and all grades to find the winners. In the single barrel event 5 shooters scored a possible 25 A Grade Points Score; Gordon Tucker, Paul Dunnett, Ben Tuck. with the eventual winner of the Ebbett Cup being Paul Dunnett. There were 5 shooters with a possible 75 in the points with Grant Castles winning the Bronco’s Cup. The single rise saw 8 shooters competing for the Havill Cup and after 187 targets Mark Walsh was the eventual winner. A special presentation was made at prize giving, that of life membership to Grant Castles. Grant has been involved with the Tauranga Club for 29 years, and a committee member for 25 years and held the office of club captain and president and has also been the coach of the Boys College shooting for the past 9 years only stepping down this year to concentrate on finalising the lease for the new club grounds. 48 gunshot OBITUARY JOHN MARTENS For the last twenty years John, Peter Brenton and I have attended sporting clay venues around NZ and overseas. Peter having passed away some four years ago had a huge impact on us but now John has gone I feel a loss that only a true friend can experience. C Grade Points Score; Scott Wagstaff, Matt Dyer, Tony Beaver. We had a reputation as being the living legends in sporting clay circles and it was often said if you can shoot in our squad you could shoot anywhere. I think this alluded to our constant banter and joking as fun and companionship were more important than a good score, although there were occasions of a prize which always brought about the question “are we staying or going yonge heer” (young man) as it was very important for Johnny to get back to Vonny, his true love and soul mate. It was nice to see some of the original shooting group from Waitemata Clay Target Club (the wombles as Russell Heward had named us) attending the funeral along with a large number of friends and business associates. Special thanks to Sid Turner and Robbie Clark for travelling from the north. B Grade Single Barrel; Stu Clark, Ian Crowe. John lived life for enjoyment and fun but was also a business man highly revered by the companies he dealt with in the carpet world, he will be missed by many. Andy Veltmeyer.

Ellesmere 90 Years On continued: And so the Club continues to flourish as the sons, grandsons, great-grandsons and relatives of the founders mixed with the blood of several fine shots who have opted to affiliate to the Club. The club is very proud of its group of young shooters all of whom show great promise. Andrew Washbourne has the potential to emulate the feats of his great-great Uncle Ted and father Barry who both attained NZ titles Jack Turner has the blood of E L F Grant Castles receiving his life membership from Allan Ebbett. (Wig) Donald in his veins. Wig was a very fine shot and on his day virtually unbeatable. Karl Perrett from Ashburton is also a talented junior. Ethan Garrett is the type of boy one would like as a son- so well mannered and keen to learn, he is developing into a force to be reckoned with at the Club. Ethan’s friend Jake Hamilton is improving every shoot. Both these boys come from the Lakeside area which has produced so many fine shots for the Club. The Club is in good heart with a popular and hardworking President and an enthusiastic Committee with a “get things done attitude’’ and is steadily improving its facilities. There are many families and businesses who readily provide sponsorship and the Club is very appreciative of this support. Membership has surged of late and is approaching 50 affiliated to the Club. Attendances at shoots boosted by visiting shooters from other Clubs have been steadily on the increase. Evening practice shoots held during day light saving months have brought out good numbers resulting in C Grade Single Barrel; Allan Treloar, Scott Wagstaff, Matt Dyer. several new members. Pride in the Club is very evident so the Club can look forward to the future with confidence.
