Aroostook River basin, 1969 •••• 24 INTRODUCTION

The area of this report includes about 536 square miles in the lower

Aroostook River drainage basin in northeastern Aroostook County in northern

Maine. The location of the area within the State is shown on the cover of the report and a sketch map indicating the topographic quadrangles for the report area is given in figure 1. The quadrangle maps (figs. 2a-e) are at the back of the report. Included in the area are parts or all of the following towns: Caribou, Castle Hill, Caswell, Chapman, Connor, Easton,

Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Mapleton, New Sweden, Perham, Presque Isle,

Stockholm, Wade, Westmanland, and Woodland.

This report presents basic data collected as part of an investigation of the ground-water resources of the lower Aroostook River basin in Maine made by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Maine Public

Utilities Commission. The data have been prepared for release in order to make available to the public basic ground-water data, which will oe useful in the planning of water-resources development. An interpretive report summarizing the availability of ground water and containing related geologic and hydrologic information will be published in the Geological Survey's

Hydrologic Investigations Atlas series.

Most of the data contained in this report were collected by the author during the 1968 and 1969 field seasons. A small amount of well data had been collected previously by Frederick K. Mack and H. N. Halberg in 1952 during the course of generalized studies made by the New England-New York Inter agency Committee (NENYIAC), and by the author during a reconnaissance of ground-water conditions in Maine made in 1957 and 1958.

The data include records of 486 wells, 7 springs, and 20 test holes

(tables 2, 3); logs of 22 wells or test holes (table 4); detailed chemical

1 2 analyses of 89 samples of ground water and 12 samples of surface water

(table 5); and information regarding the public water-supply systems in the

area (table 6). The report makes no attempt to record all the wells in the

area but rather includes selected, representative ones. The locations of

wells, springs, and test borings are shown on figure 2 (a through e).

The geologic units used in tables 2 and 3 are described in table 1, which

is intended as an aid in determining the general characteristics and relative

values as aquifers of the various units.

NUMBERING AND LOCATION SYSTEMS FOR WELLS, SPRINGS, AND TEST HOLES

Wells, springs, and test holes in Maine are numbered consecutively by

county. Each well designation consists of a letter or letters indicating

county, and a number (for example: Ar 412). If more than one well at the

same location was inventoried, these are usually differentiated by a small

letter following the number (for example: Ar 412a). The letters indicating

the county are not shown on figure 2 or in tables 2, 3, and 5 except at the

top of each page.

The wells, springs, and test holes also have a location number (column

2 of tables 2 and 3), based on their latitude and longitude coordinates in

degrees, minutes, and seconds. This number is used by the Geological Survey

to identify each well from all others. The location number also helps the

user of figure 2 to find any given well. For example, well Ar 412, which is

located at 46°57'20", north latitude and 68°5'58" west longitude is given

the location designation 465720N0680558. l. The ". l" at the end of this

designation is a number assigned in the order in which wells were inventor

ied within the area of specific latitude and longitude. 3

Alluvium 0-40 ll Sand, gravel, cobbles, silt, and clay, underlying In valleys of small streams alluvium may streams channels, flood plains, and low river occur as small discontinuous patches, terraces. but in places, particularly along the Aroostook and Little Madawaska Rivers, and along Presque Isle Stream, forms a mappable unit. Where alluvium underlies the stream channels it is not considered an aquifer because of its generally sub merged position. Where alluvium under lies flood plains or low terraces ad jacent to stream channels it is generally thin or fine grained and not a significant aquifer. In places along the Aroostook River, alluvium overlies outwash which may yield several hundred gallons per minute to individual wells.

From 20 to 70 gpm (gallons and clay and cobbles. per minute) have been obtained from drilled wells of 6-inch diameter. Large supplies of water (as much as 1700 gpm) have been obtained from several properly screened and developed wells from 12 to 18 inches in diameter in areas, parti cularly along the Aroostook River, where the deposits have a thick zone of satur ation and are in hydraulic continuity with an adjacent body of surface water for recharge. The water is of good quality but hard.

Largest known yield from ice-contact deposits in this area is 75 gpm. Water is of good quality but hard.

Depths range from 23 Mapleton Sandstone. Outcrops of intrusive to 800 feet. The yields of 317 wells igneous rocks such as granite and diabase; range from 0 to 560 gpm and average 34 and volcanic rocks \such as andesite,, rhy..: gpm. The median yield is 15 gpm. The elite, and tuff also occur. greatest depths and highest yields are for wells drilled for industrial purposes or for public supply (at military installa tions). These wells required more water than farm and home wells and consequently were drilled deeper than such wells. The water in bedrock is contained primarily in secondary openings such as cleavage or bedd ing planes, joints, fractures, or solution openings. The sandstone formations may contain some water between sand grains where cementing is poor. It is not poss ible to predict accurately the depth at which wa_t_er-bearing -~Qn~_s_ will be ~~count ered or h~w mu~h water will be a-.;-ai-lib-le to wells. The Carys Mills Formation is very widespread and constitutes the prin cipal bedrock aquifer. Rather incomplete data suggest that larger yields are avail able from wells drilled in the Carys Mills than in other formations. The water in bedrock is generally confined under- art-es~ ian -conditions - that is, the water will rise to a level in a well above that at which it is reached by the drill. Several wells for which information is available flowed. The water is of good chemical quality but is hard.
