Monsoon Watch

The eastern end of monsoon trough has shifted northwards. The axis of monsoon trough at mean sea level passes through Jodhpur, Ajmer, Gwalior, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Bhagalpur, Kolkata and thence southeastwards to eastcentral Bay of Bengal. The westernend of monsoon trough is also likely to shift northwards.

Situation

As of 23 June, 2009, 3000 families in 3 districts (Porbander, Junagarh, Jamnagar) in Gujrat, has been shifted to safer place by army rescue, due to flood according to the official said. In three district of Gujrat, Porbander is severely affected, GSDMA added. The all block of more than 30 villages are affected in Porbander. However, there has been no report of any casualty due to floods from these districts since, Thursday morning, the official added. Besides, inter-connecting roads in the rural areas were completely washed out in the flood waters. Areas like Barda and Ghed are submerged in three to five feet deep water.

Government response 1. Three platoons of the Army have been called in for relief work. 2. “More than 1,400 people have been shifted to safer places. 3. The district administration has distributed some 10000 food packets in the flood hit areas. 4. A National Disaster Management Authority team from New Delhi has arrived in Junagadh to help with the rescue operations in the flood affected villages. 5. Army rescue teams have been deployed in the worst affected regions 6. The state government has sent its own teams to the flood affected areas of Junagadh, Jamnagar, Veraval and Mangrol regions with boats and life saving equipment to evacuate those marooned on the rooftops of their houses
