Mandibles are large and sickle shaped. Mizoram is one of the North Eastern Hill states of India, where no systematic studies on tiger beetles have so far been done and no mention of tiger beetles have been made in. This paper highlights, first ever studies on tiger beetles, documents, total 12 species of Tiger Beetles, of three sub families namely Collyrinae include one species, Sub family Theratinae include one species, sub family Cicindelinae includes 10 species, based on systematic studies conducted for a period of 12 months, from June 2009 to May 2010, at Champhai District of Mizoram, North East India for the first time. Key words : Cicindelid, Insecta, Coleoptera, Mizoram. INTRODUCTION of three sub families namely Collyrinae, which includes Neocollyris spp., Sub family Theratinae, which includes Mizoram state is one of the North Eastern Hill states Therates waagenorum, sub family Cicindelinae includes of India, lies between 21058’-24030’N latitude and 92016’- Cylindera viridalibris, Cylindera delavayi, Cylindera 93025’E longitude, with an area of 21,081 sq. km. having subtilesignata, Cylindera spinolae, Cylindera spp., rich biodiversity. Mizoram state is politically divided into Calomera chloris, Chalomera funerae, Chalomera eight districts, Champhai district is one of them located spp., Chalochroa tritoma, Heptodonta pulchella, based east side. Champhai district has an area of about 3185 sq on systematically studies conducted over a period of 12 km located between 230 to 24005’ N latitude and 930 to months, from June 2009 to May 2010, at Champhai 93026’E longitude, situated east of Mizoram state, District of Mizoram, North East India for the first time. bordering with Myanmar. It is connected to capital Aizawl with only road communication, and is the only way of its METHODOLOGY connection with Mizoram / India. Study area : Systematic surveys were conducted at Tiger Beetles have been studied well in details (Uniyal different areas of Champhai district of Mizoram state (fig. and Brargav, 2007; Uniyal and Sivakumar, 2007; Bhargav 1), like Ngur, Vapar, Khawzawl, Kelkang, Dilkawn, and Uniyal, 2008; Pajni and Bedi, 1973; Pajni et al, 1984; Zokhawthar, also include river bank area of river Tuipui Pearson and Anderson,1985; Pearson and Ghorpade, 1987, and river Tiau, from June 2009 to May 2010, over a period 1989; Singh, 1991; Pearson and Cassola, 1992; Carrol of one year. The area of survey includes agricultural fields, and Pearson, 1998; Swada and Wiesner, 1999; Uniyal forests area, and river bank area and road side walks. and Mathur, 2000; Sinu et al, 2006; Tigreros and Kattan, Champhai forests include Tropical wet ever green forests, 2008) in many other parts of India / world. Tropical semi ever green forests and Montane sub tropical forests (Champion and Seth, 1968). Surveys were Rich faunal bioresources of the area, specially Tiger conducted at all possible approachable place of Beetle (Coleoptera : Cicindelidae) fauna of the area has unprotected areas of the locality. Occasional encountered not been studied so far. No mention of Tiger Beetles of specimens were also taken and considered for the study. Mizoram has been made in FAUNA OF MIZORAM, 2007, published by Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta. Climatic conditions : Mean temperature of the region varies from 220-260 C, whereas winter temperature Therefore attempt has been made to conduct first varies from 040-230C approximately and summer ever studies on Tiger Beetles (Coleoptera : Cicindelidae) temperature ranger from 180-310C approximately. Average of Mizoram, with special reference to Champhai District rain fall ranges from 1600 – 2200 mm annually. Altitude of Mizoram, North East India. of the area ranges from 500 – 2200 m above msl.
