STEWARDSHIP

We are God’s faithful stewards, giving our time, talent and treasure back to our God through the faith community of SPB! We thank you for being part of this Body of Christ and for serving God here with us and our Pastoral Staff and the hundreds of volunteers who serve daily here at SPB.

Info to share from our Pastoral Plan Project of Transparencynsparen cy & Reminders on our Parish Policies: • We are grateful to so many of you who mention SPB @ Heinen's and use the special code that goes toward our school and the PTO. You generated $3,088 this past school year. And those of you who save and give us the Box Tops that are collected (along with the Campbell Labels) were able to generate $1,983.60 toward the school. What does this money go toward? School supplies for the teachers. • When we had our Walk-a-thon, we raised over $20,000. These funds were earmarked for technology and a new iPad cart. This was just purchased through the PTO fundraiser (Walk-a-thon) for $16,199.95. We improve our school all the time – THANKS TO YOU and your HARD work!! • We have begun a new fiscal year in the parish’s life. Thanks for making July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017 so successful and financially sound for our many ministries and services that we provide. • Our calendar has now opened up for you to rent room space for your family events. Just a reminder, we do not ask for a stipend for Funeral luncheons, per parish policy. • Mass Intentions are now available for the rest of 2017 & 2018. Some reminders: o Since Mass Intentions are gifts or offerings for the priest, there can be no financial ties or demands to them. Seven years back when as a parish we adhered to the General Instruction on the Roman Missal updates, which do not call for names to be mentioned during the Universal Prayer, we stopped a custom that is common in several parishes. o Additionally, due to refund requests for mispronounced names and lectors receiving negative comments and pressure after Mass, we have decided to make it clear that there are no demands on this free-will/gift offering for Mass intentions. o Thank you for understanding and continuing to share the gift, both for the priest, but also for those you wish to honor. o Mass Intentions are for the living and deceased – for someone’s birthday, anniversary or any occasion. o If you offer the Mass intention you may sit in the pew with the credence “gift table” in the middle of the nave to bring up the gifts of bread and wine. This way the priest may thank you personally for the offering and remembrance of your loved one. • Our parish is a tithing parish – meaning that as the Bible says, we give 10% of our funds to help Christ and those in need through our Manna Ministry. Manna Ministry supports our parishioners in a time of financial worry. THANK YOU for helping us witness this stewardship. We commit $8,100 each month.

GUEST COLUMN- KATHY POHLHAMMER

As I sat looking at my computer screen, hoping it would offer some inspiration for this article, I glanced up and saw several people passing by my office. A moment later, there were several more people going by. It then hit me. Our parish is a very busy place! Of course, our family of faith is centered on the Eucharist. We gather at Mass and various other liturgies and services, such as our monthly Taizé Prayer holy hour and the upcoming Saint Ann and Saint Peter Julian Eymard Triduums. We help each other grow on our faith journey. God has blessed our parish in so many ways. However, in a parish this size, it is sometimes difficult to connect with one another. One way we nurture community in our parish is through our many ministries. Ministries gather morning, noon and night, so you can see one reason why SPB is such a busy place. If you are already involved with a parish organization, please be assured that your efforts and talents are appreciated. If you are considering joining a parish organization, make sure you save the dates for our Ministry Fair scheduled for September 9 and 10. Plan on stopping by to explore the opportunities to get involved at SPB. In the meantime, visit our parish website: www.saintpaschal.com , to learn more about our parish ministries. Think about what you can do to help strengthen our faith community. Below is a Prayer for a Discipleship Church. Will you say this prayer for all of us at Saint Paschal? My church is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray. It will bring others into its worship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a Church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion and mercy, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my Church to be. - Adapted from the Diocese of San Diego.

FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

Due to production schedules, vacation and more, this column and several inserts were created June 12.

141414 ththth Sunday in Ordinary Time: While the Gospel for this Sunday is quite common and assuring, knowing that we can come to the LORD for strength and relief of our burdens, it is just as hopefully and helpful to recall our second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Romans. (This summer I have been focusing on the second reading for a change.) Paul reminds us, as he started to recall last week, that our baptism makes us into a new Spirit. We are not people of the flesh, but live in the Spirit of the Risen LORD. This can be helpful for those of us who struggle with sins and worries of the flesh. But in tandem with the Gospel, this scripture helps us know that we already belong to Christ and there for with Christ in us, we find our strength, our courage and abilities to live well. When we have the aches and pains, the “bad thoughts” and other items that stress us and feel that we are disjointed from Christ, this scripture reminds us that we are indeed in the LORD. And he walks with us in our burdens and gives us the strength of his Spirit to live as the disciples and apostles we are. Not in the future – but now! As God’s children!

More questions/answers: Summer time is a chance for me to answer the questions that pop up in the yellow suggestion box, the Fireside Chat or are regularly asked of me, especially in the last 8 years.

• I noticed that you add different names during the second part of Eucharistic Prayer. Who are they and why did you choose them? The church asks us to always remember Mary and plus the patron saint of the parish. I always add the “saint of the day,” even if it is a Sunday, so let’s say it’s June 13 – and that’s – I’ll mention him that day too. The other are the women founders (Saint Angela Merici and Saint Julie Billiart) of the two groups of women religious who reside in our parish. I know when I mentioned that to a few people who have asked over the years, they said, “You should let us know that there are sisters in the parish!” They were unaware that there are Ursuline Sisters who have a “convent” on Ammon Road and of course, the SND’s live on our own SPB property. They lease from the parish and we are grateful for their presence.

• If we have sisters in our parish, especially living at the convent, why don’t they dress as they used to so that we know that they are nuns? They can better address this answer than I can. However, having worked in vocation ministry over the years along side with women religious – and there is a difference between “sisters” and “nuns” (the nuns being cloistered), they choose to wear the dress of the times, just as their founders did ––– and just as Jesus did. It may be stunning to think, we always ask the question, “What would Jesus do?” The other question we don’t think about much: What would Jesus wear? He blended in with his culture just as many religious women and men choose to do so today. We wear symbol of our religious order as an identity, just as many of you wear a cross or crucifix to identify yourself as a Christian.

More questions/answers next week! Let’s continue to pray for each other.

In Christ our Eucharist,

Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, SPB Class of ‘79 Pastor

POPE FRANCIS REQUESTS: TAKE THE YOUTH SURVEY! The Catholic bishops of the world are planning to meet in October 2018 for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The theme of this gathering is “Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment.” In preparation for this major synod on youth, Francis wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful. Consequently, the Diocese of Cleveland has made available a survey questionnaire to gather information on the current state of the young in our diocese that will be included as part of the pre-synod discernment document. The survey can be found on the diocesan website home page, www.dioceseofcleveland.org . All are invited and encouraged to participate by taking this short survey. The bishops of the United States pray that the results of this survey will help them more fully understand the experience of young people in our Church and in our country -- their hopes, dreams, fears and struggles -- so that the synod may bear fruit in offering more insight and direction to our ministry with young people.
