PRST 5450/6450/7450 - Computer-Based Technologies for eTraining 3 Credit Hours

Course Description:

This course teaches students the concepts for developing and maintaining just-in-time computer-based training materials and courses using various multimedia and authoring tools.

Course Outcomes:

At the conclusion of the course, the students will be able to

1. Create computer-based e-training materials and courses using multimedia and authoring tools to enhance presentation of information to meet just-in-time training needs; 2. Effectively integrate text, graphics, animation, audio, and video into e-training materials and courses; 3. Create and adapt e-training for delivery via mobile devices such as cell phones, PDAs, mp3 players, etc. 4. Create an etraining website for storing and accessing all just-in-time etraining courses and materials; 5. Incorporate multimedia and elearning/content authoring tools and mobile technologies into the development and delivery of e-training modules following appropriate theories of instructional design, teaching, and learning.

NOTE: Students will need approval for their e-training course topic (area) from the Instructor prior to beginning any work on the course.

Prerequisites and Corequisites:

Graduate standing; PRST 5400/6400/7400 is a prerequisite. Students need to have a solid understanding of andragogy, and knowledge of instructional design to properly prepare for course requirements.

Course Topics:

This course is divided into five (5) Modules: (1) Programs for Creating and Maintaining a Website for Storing and Accessing Just-in-Time eTraining Materials/Courses; (2) eLearning Content Authoring Software and Tools for Creating Multimedia Content; (3) Programs for Developing Interactive Games, Demos, Prototypes, Simulations, etc.; (4) Mobile Learning (m- Learning): Implementation and Learning Mobile Author Programs; and (5) eTraining Course: Designing, Developing, and Delivering the Content.

Students will complete nine (9) learning topics in this course. The culmination of the course will be a fully developed etraining course that includes/incorporates a MINIMUM of four (4) multimedia/elearning content authoring tools and one (1) mobile learning (m-learning) activity.

The overall purpose of this course is to give students the ability to develop just-in-time computer- based e-training materials and courses using various multimedia and authoring tools. As such, the grading in this course will focus on projects designed to assess students' mastery of the material covered.

Creation of Flash-Based Students will create a Presentation from PowerPoint PowerPoint presentation that using a PowerPoint-to-Flash will be used in ONE (1) Conversion Software Tool etraining application for their course. They will then select one conversion software tool (i.e., Articulate Presenter, Adobe Presenter, etc.) to convert the PowerPoint presentation to a flash movie file. Students should upload their completed PowerPoint to Flash movie file to the PowerPoint Presentation to Flash Movie Conversion Assignment dropbox. Completed flash movie will be evaluated using the PowerPoint Presentation to Flash Movie Project Rubric.

Threaded Group Discussion, Students will participate in a PowerPoint to Flash Discussion of the Flash Conversion Tools conversion tools they reviewed as part of Module 4; comparing and contrasting the tools they selected to convert their PowerPoint presentation to a flash movie file. The activity, project, or exercise must be related to the topic of students' eTraining course as the project, activity, or exercise will be included in students' completed eTraining Course. Completed Adobe Captivate projects should be uploaded to the Adobe Captivate Project dropbox. Adobe Captivate projects will be evaluated using the Adobe Captivate Project Rubric.

eTraining Course Assignment Students will create a fully developed eTraining Course that will include a minimum of FOUR (4) multimedia tools and/or eLearning Content Authoring programs and one mobile learning activity. The focus should be on just-in-time training needs. Project will be evaluated using the eTraining Course Rubric.

Total points 1440 pts.

All materials developed for use in a student's eTraining Course must be free of errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. In addition, students must exercise judgment in using materials obtained from the Internet. Where appropriate, all copyrighted and trademarked material must be indicated as such. Plagiarism, cheating, or other forms of academic misconduct are sufficient grounds for assignment of a grade of "F" for the course. In addition, any guidelines in place at the student's degree-granting institution will also be followed in reporting the act of academic dishonesty to appropriate personnel.

Academic misconduct can encompass plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, or facilitating any such act. For purposes of this section, the following definitions apply. (1) Plagiarism. The adoption or reproduction of ideas, words, statements, images, or works of another person as one's own without proper acknowledgment.

(2) Cheating. Using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise. The term academic exercise includes all forms of work submitted for credit or hours.

(3) Fabrication. Unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise.

(4) Facilitation. Helping or attempting to help another to violate a provision of the institutional code of academic misconduct.

Class Participation:

Students are expected to participate in all interactive aspects of this course. Students must communicate with other students in the chat room. Students are expected to communicate with the instructor as a learning resource and to use the Course Help Desk via the Course Management System Discussion Forum as a means of participating in the Course Learning Community. Students must check the course Help Desk frequently for announcements, and students must actively participate in threaded discussion events. Points are earned for threaded discussions. Students are also encouraged to post anonymous tips to the Course Suggestion Box to assist the instructor in determining the flow of the course and whether any mid-course changes might be necessary.

Late Policy:

Assignments are due when specified. Late assignments will not be accepted. Course Management System Dropbox for assignments will be set for closing dates/times. Assignments cannot be uploaded after the specified due date/time as the Course Management System Dropbox will be closed.

Respect the privacy of other class members

Discussions:

Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant. Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic. Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other’s ideas. Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks. Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks. Be positive and constructive in group discussions. Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.
