STMARYSLYNN.COM

As we move into a new school year, there are a number of exciting changes that will impact procedures at St Mary’s.

School Store

Our Digital Citizenship Initiative for the upcoming school year is on schedule to begin next fall with 90 to 95 percent of the current classroom text books available as eBooks. With so many classroom books available as eBooks, we have decided to transition the school store to an online presence at the end of this school year. Any textbooks or workbooks required for next year can be purchased directly online. Links will be posted to our website at stmaryslynn.com.

With this transition, the purchase of St. Mary’s apparel and uniforms will become an online process. We are currently working with a few vendors and will communicate the site information to you as soon as it is available. The existing inventory of school apparel in the school store will be available for purchase at a discount until the end of this school year.

There will also be a change in the payment process for school fees and other activities (e.g. class trips) starting in 2013–14. In the past, school fees were paid as part of the textbook purchasing process at the St. Mary’s school store. In the future, we are moving to an online payment process that is more secure and more convenient for you by using the FACTS system. Currently the FACTS system has only been used for tuition payments but we are going to expand this to include all payments going forward. This will allow for payments to happen outside of school hours and provide a better tracking process for the school. This will require that all families sign up and use the FACTS systems for payments to St Mary’s High School beginning in July 2013.

Below is a list of the fees and payments that will go through the FACTS system: Other potential items:

• Computer Science fee (Marian Division only) • Field trips • Marian Division Moving On Fee (Grade 8) • Prom tickets • Art Fees (for Grades 6, 7 & 10 and option for Grade 12) • Semi formal tickets • Keyboarding Fee (Grade 9) • College Fair Transportation fee (Grade 11) • Yearbook fee (Grades 11 & 12) • Testing Fee (all grades except for 12) • Graduation fee (Grade 12) • Magazine fee (Grade 12) • Planning Handbook (All grades) • Combination lock (only locks allowed on campus; school has combination and key to open if needed)

Book Buyback Process

The annual Book Buyback process is going to change as well. St. Mary’s will no longer be involved in the process directly; we are arranging for third-party book companies to come to St. Mary’s to handle the process this year. As in the past, the process will occur in June, but the decisions to purchase books and any payments that result from these decisions will come directly from the participating companies. St. Mary’s will have no involvement or input in any steps of the process. All questions about the process will need to be directed to the companies involved.

As we finalize procedures we will continuously post news toSTMARYSLYNN.COM . Stay tuned! ST. MARY’S EVENT PERMISSION SLIP This permission slip can be used for any event. Print, fill out, and hand in prior to event.

As we transition to i-Pads electronic editions of the summer reading books are not required. Summer reading books can be borrowed from your local library or can be purchased in paperback editions or ordered online from booksellers such as Barnes and Noble or Amazon. ST. MARY'S SUMMER READING FORM

As your teacher for the new school year, I can't wait to get to know you, what you think, and how you feel about things. One way that will help me learn about you is to find out your personal reactions to what you read.

Using the heading below and the instructions and examples given, complete your double-entry response journals on loose-leaf paper. You need to keep a journal for each book that you read this summer. You need a minimum of ten excerpts from each book you read.

These excerpts should span the entire length of the book. They should cover the beginning, middle and end of the book. Obviously, your personal responses should be the longest part of each entry.

These journals will be collected by the various subject teachers on the first full day of classes. These journals must be handwritten, not typed! These journals will be your first grade for the new school year in each of the subject areas.

Read, Respond, Enjoy!

Example Acceptable page 179, paragraph 3 I chose this passage because I could definitely picture "A sloop was loitering in the distance, dropping slowly the sloop in my mind. I could see the boat barely moving down with the tide, her sail hanging uselessly against the in the water as the tide was going out. Also, I love the mast and as the reflection of the sky gleamed along the author’s choice of words like loitering, this really makes still water, it seemed as if the vessel was suspended in the sail seem as if it’s just hanging around, the way a flag the air." hangs off a flagpole when there’s no wind.

Unacceptable

When my family and I go to Cape Cod I love to sit on the beach and watch the boats go by. INSTRUCTIONS FOR QUOTES AND NOTES DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNAL
