Bernie Worrell Orchestra Thursday, April 11th • The 21st Saloon, 5:30pm Bernie Worrell: How many artists can Album, to name two of the more monolithic say they were in on the ground floor examples. Keith Richards, Yoko Ono, Bootsy of an honest-to-Rock & Roll Hall Of Collins, , Ginger Baker, Mos Def, Fame supergroup, all while inventing a Sly & Robbie, Deee-Lite, Bill Laswell and completely original and uncanny sound many more have recruited him in the studio and, in the ensuing years, building a and on tour—all for his versatility, vision legendary reputation as one of the most and feverish creativity whenever he gets versatile hired guns in the music business? his hands on a keyboard. June, 2011 saw True funkateers know the history. From the the release of “Bernie Worrell: Standards”, fat Minimoog bass lines of “Flash Light” and “One Nation Bernie’s take on jazz standards, precipitating the decision by Under A Groove” to the percussive piano runs of “Chocolate Worrell and co-producer, Evan Taylor to “take the show on City” and “Give Up the ,” Bernie Worrell is synonymous the road”. The Bernie Worrell Orchestra is a nine-piece band with the legacy of Parliament-Funkadelic; in fact, he’s one consisting of two guitarists, a drummer, bass, percussion of the originators of the psychedelic funk sound, having and a three-piece horn section which performs songs from written and co-produced the lion’s share of the music going Bernie’s vast repertoire, including his most recent original back to Funkadelic’s formative years, with an eclectic ear songs. The enthusiastic response from fellow musicians has for everything from Chopin to the Chi-Lites. These days led to guest appearances by the likes of Bootsy Collins, Mike the terms “living legend” or “funk icon” really don’t come Watt, Money Mark, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Gary close to doing him justice. “Funk iconoclast” is probably Lucas in addition to a vast variety of notable artists. I had noticed that the BSO newsletter ran the Bryan Lee promo story for his show at the 21st two straight months which in turn told me they did this for a reason, go see him. I had not heard of Bryan Lee before but the more people I asked about Bryan the more folks told me not to miss him so by-god I did not! Good show to boot, nice blends of his Chicago influence and N’walins style where Bryan lives now... Bryan tended to jabber in between his songs a little too much for me and I had trouble understanding what he was saying but when he played I heard him loud and clear. I was very impressed with Bryan’s other guitar player he could easily be headlining his own act with his skill level, wished he would have kept that slide on his finger a little longer... The drummer appeared to be the happiest skin banger in America he had a smile on his face all night, and the Bass player was Nick Hern out of the Topeka Kansas area. I wished I had the names of the Drummer and Guitar player they deserve to be mentioned by name, I need you guys to bash me in the skull and remind me to get names of the band while I’m there instead wishing I had done it as I type my summary of the night. Live and local, live it or lose it! -Conrad Good BLUES NEWS • BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 7

Look up high energy in the musician’s handbook and you’re most likely to see a picture of Hamilton Loomis, I’ve seen him work the ENTIRE floor of the 21st and never set foot on the floor, he walks the tables, chairs, bar, pool tables people just keep shoving objects in front of him and he just keeps surfing the crowd. Not sure if he has ever been to the Zoo Bar in Lincoln but I have not missed an Omaha show in the last 4-5 years. These guys are road warriors and are always on the move to their next show somewhere, Ford Motor Company even did an ad about his tour van and how many miles he logs a year in it! Fun Band. -Conrad Good

Brandon Santini Thursday, Feb. 28th The 21st Saloon, 5:30pm One of the new artists on Electro Glide’s growing roster of fine blues musicians. Raised in North Carolina, Brandon Santini relocated to Memphis in 2003 where he began to absorb the sounds and culture of the Delta. Honing his craft night after night, he fronted the Blues Music Award-nominated band Delta Highway for six years and has now embarked on a solo career. With tasteful speed and licks, he combines his respect for traditional blues with his own distinctive style of playing. Santini has been sort of flying under the big star radar for quite some time now, a too-well-kept secret in the blues world. Songs of Love, Money, and Misery is a fine, fine solo debut, and if there’s any justice in the world should be a huge step forward in making Brandon Santini’s name as well known as it deserves to be.
