VOL 32, NO. 21 TUESDAY, MAY 25, 1 SECTIONS, 32 PAGES 50 County Judge says nude is not necessarily lewd By Steve Ruediger Islander staff writer Charges against three people arrested for being nude on Bowman's Beach on Sanibel were tentatively dismissed in Lee County Court last week. County Judge Radford R. Sturgis said previous court decisions, including a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court, required that lewd and lascivious conduct accompa- ny nudity or the nudity is not illegal. Sturgis commented that, in effect, it was legal to be naked on Bowman's Beach as long as no arousal or other lewd activity was involved. Plager said judges can dismiss cases even though a law is valid and added, "We will enforce the law as it is writ- Photo by Kathleen Blase ten." Retrospective II A season of tuneful winners at Old Schoolhouse Theater By Frank Wagner Islander staff writer The fall and winter season of musical theater at the Old Schoolhouse Theater on Sanibel has been of superior caliber. The musical genius of its guiding light, J.T. Smith, has offered islanders, their friends and tourists many evenings of pure musical delight. This has been a season of casts with excellent voices. Their individual vocal prowess also adapted to strong ensemble performance. In fact, their voices blended so well it has been an additional inspiration for J.T. He has concocted some of the best vocal arrangements yet heard at the little gem of a theater on Periwinkle Way. The strong vocal qualities of the performers certainly were contributing factors to the huge success of "With a Song in My Heart," a Richard Rodgers Songbook and "Up Shubert Alley." "Up Shubert Alley" proved to be such an audience favorite it was held over and played an extended run from March 25 to May 1. J.T. This evening with Cohn was especially written for her by J.T It was an entertaining work in progress. There were some wonder- ful moments but the entire project needed much more careful plotting, pruning and rehearsal.

• "Ho! Ho! Ho! The Christmas Show" again proved to be the pterfect treat. J.T. always adapts the numbers to new performers and that keeps things con- stantly fresh. This year the show was trimmed to an hour and played twice nightly during a 10-day holiday engage- ment.

• "With A Song In My Heart" - A Richard Rodgers Songbook was a delight. I don't think that there was any- one in attendance during the entire run that hadn't had a brush or two with a Rodgers' song. The vocal arrange- ments in this revue were the stars; comedy took a back seat.

• "Up Shubert Alley" sent J.T. into new territory. There was more concentration on movement and dance. It was an important addition. One tends to compliment by saying: "The best yet!" In the case of "Up Shubert Alley," it is not only an accolade, it is a statement of fact. J.T., the artistic director of The Old Schoolhouse Theater and president of Encore Productions, is theatri- cally a very special individual. The revue is a format that resists mastering.
