The ―Sent-Down Body‖ Remembers: Contemporary Chinese Immigrant Women‘s Visual and Literary Narratives Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Dong Li Isbister, M.A. Graduate Program in Women‘s Studies. The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Linda Mizejewski, Advisor Sally Kitch, Co-advisor Rebecca Wanzo Judy Wu Copyright by Dong Li Isbister 2009 Abstract In this dissertation, I use contemporary Chinese immigrant women‘s visual and literary narratives to examine gender, race, ethnicity, migration, immigration, and sexual experiences in various power discourses from a transnational perspective. In particular, I focus on the relationship between body memories and history, culture, migration and immigration portrayed in these works. I develop and define ―the sent-down body,‖ a term that describes educated Chinese urban youths (also called sent-down youths in many studies) working in the countryside during the Chinese Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The ―sent-down body‖ in this context and in my analysis is the politicized and sexualized migrant body. The term also describes previous sent-down youths‘ immigration experiences in the United States, because many of them became immigrants in the post-Cultural Revolution era and are usually described as ―overseas sent-down youths‖ (yangchadui). Therefore, the ―sent-down body‖ is also the immigrant body, and it is racialized. Moreover, the ―sent-down body‖ is gendered, but I study the female ―sent-down body‖ and its represented experiences in specific political, historical, cultural, and sexual contexts. By using ―the sent-down body‖ as an organizing concept in my dissertation, I introduce a new category of analysis in studies of Chinese immigrants‘ history and culture. -

Produced. jointly' by" the August First Film Studio (Bayi dianying zhipianchang), Peking Film Studio (Beijing dianying Zhipianchanq)r The Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio (Zhongyang xinwen jilu dianying zhipianchang). When first released, this film was billed as a historic epic poem (shishi) which re—tells the story of the Chinese revolution in song and dance. The official blurb which accompanies the film reads: This is an epic created in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. More than 3,000 people from. some 70 units in Peking, the capital city, Shanghai and the People's Liberation Army contributed to the creation with revolutionary fervour. Beginning with the prologue "Sunflowers Face the Sun," it is divided into six parts —— "Dawn in the East," "A Single Spark That Sparks a Prairie Fire," On the Long March," "Flames of War .Against Japanese Aggression," Burying’ the Chiang‘ Kai—shek; Regime," and. "The Chinese People Have Stood. Up." There are 28 scenes with 24 dances, song—dance performance and songs with dramatic action, 30 revolutionary songs and 14 pieces of recitations. The whole epic is an affair of grandeur and colour, giving a graphic account of the events beginning from the birth of the People's Republic in 1949 -— the historical course of the revolution of the Chinese people, who have put up a tough fight to liberate themselves and advanced wave upon wave under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and Chairman Mao. -

Investigating Narrative Cinema with Female Protagonists Directed by Chinese Post-Fifth-Generation Filmmakers Yin Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Studies The University of Canterbury 2012 Abstract Since the naming of the Chinese Fifth Generation in the 1980s, generational study became an important methodology in Chinese film studies. The Chinese directors up to the mid-1980s are categorised into five generations. However, the directors emerging after the Fifth Generation do not so far have a certain generational name. Thus, the identification of this “nameless” group, which is called the post-fifth generation in this thesis, is an interesting issue reflecting the political, economical and cultural discourse in contemporary China. This thesis focuses on these directors’ films narrated with female protagonists, probes the reason why they chose female-centred narratives, and examines how they portrayed women and women’s stories in their filmic representation. In the light of Foucault’s theories of discourse and power, I examine the films as a kind of representation which is generated within discursive formation, and through which the directors identify themselves. The conclusion reached by the discussion is that both the female and the male directors studied in this thesis present very feminine discourse in their films. While the female directors are emphasising, even advertising their identity as women, their male counterparts are trying very hard to simulate and perform a feminine identification. This finding exactly answers the question in the thesis title. Since femininity is something that can be chosen, simulated, used, and played, the word “feminist” can also become a cultural brand from which the directors can benefit. -
