No one on board suffered a scratch. We quote now from Thursday’s ‘Courier Mail’ - “The next survival challenge was getting out of the aircraft before it sank. Captain James would have three minutes. Mr Nobbs said that late Wednesday night after suns be quick! several aborted landing attempts, a Pel-Air Medivac $49.95 aircraft operating for NRMA Careflight was successfully ditched off the western coast of Norfolk Island by Captain Dominic James. The captain and passengers were able to exit the sinking aircraft safely and using three lifejackets were able to maintain floatation for the medivac patient, passengers and crew. Although no mayday or panpan call had been received by the Norfolk Island airport, duty airport manager Larry Quintal had already commenced emergency procedures and within minutes the emergency control centre was staffed, emergency rescue personnel were despatched, aviation fire and rescue crews were briefed along with the Volunteer Rescue Association, Norfolk Island Police, Emergency Services Minister Neville Christian, Airport Manager Glenn Robinson, airport staff and marine craft operators. The Chief Minister said that what followed was a near textbook process of emergency services and rescue coordination. Communications links were engaged and coordinates were sought from Australian and emergency services authorities for satellite confirmation of the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) location to ensure that marine rescue vessels were dispatched to the appropriate rescue zone. Unfortunately due to the rapid submerging of the ditched aircraft the EPIRB had been unable to lock onto two satellites before ceasing transmission, therefore no triangulation was available and Norfolk Island rescue authorities had to commence search operations without this critical information. Valuable local aviation experience was used to map out probable circuit paths taken by the aircraft and this information was passed through the communication network to commence a coordinated coverage of the areas most likely to contain the ditched aircraft. During this process, emergency lighting towers were erected at the Kingston pier lighting up the entire landing area and surrounding heritage buildings, while two rescue boats had been launched, equipped with safety and rescue personnel and equipment. Various vantage points around the island were used to check for any indication of wreckage and survivors and contact was made with residents living on the western coast to and much more gather last known positioning information. With the array of lighting covering the landing area and the sea entrance, it was obvious that the rescue exercise was far from over as massive swells crashed against the surrounding reef and entry to the Kingston Pier. Through pitch black night the rescue vessels arrived back through the entrance, navigating reef and breaking waves to synchronize with the crane that would lift them above the thrashing water and enable rescue staff and crew to return to solid ground. After Sputt Douran’s boat was successfully removed from the water the Advance II was visible coming around the headland and with a deal of courage and expertise Darren Bates navigated the survivor laden Thank You vessel into line with the pier fenders and was craned from the water to an appropriate height enabling safe Redstone Recital - 7th November, 2009 removal of all on board. Speaking to us in that first interview, Mr. Hand estimated that the re-roofing project would take from 8 to 12 weeks to complete. A total of some 13,500 slate tiles, sourced from a quarry in Canada, were needed to replace the previous roof laid in 1958. As the tiles from this earlier re-roofing were asbestos based they had to be carefully removed. Thanks to David Magri, the KAVHA Works Supervisor and the boys from the Restoration team - Kane Anderson, Peter Knapton, Mick Williams and Dean FitzPatrick - this work was successfully carried out. This enabled the men from “Mr. Shingles”- Matthew Levitt, Stuart King, Tim Bonney and Chris Kenny (who had been brought over especially by the Church of England Parish Council to act as Works Supervisor), to commence with the laying of the new slate tiles. Thanks to the run of wonderful weather and the fact that the original timber used on the roof was still in A1 condition, the tiling is fast coming to a completion and, if all goes well, should be completed in a fortnight’s time. In the original article we mentioned that many people had sponsored a Chapel slate tile at a cost of $10. At the time of going to press some $5,000 had been raised. If you would like to help in the preservation of this beautiful Chapel which was consecrated on Tuesday, December 7th, 1880 and have your name, or that of a loved one, printed on one of the slates which will be used the cover the Bell Tower, just get in touch with Bernie Christian Bailey on either 22411 or mobile 50049. The virus is transmitted from cow to cow via contact with secretions, but does not transmit to humans. Unfortunately, in the majority of cases of BVDV, physical symptoms of illness are often not obvious and may go undetected for long periods of time. It is most often identified once herd productivity has noticeably decreased over a few breeding seasons.

Fortunately for Norfolk Island Adams John Adams. chose to follow God. I have just finished a book, “After the Bounty” We have a similar decision to make. Will we live as by Cal Adams. It is the story of what happened to rebels, mutinying against our maker, or will we accept the survivors of Bounty mutiny after they arrived on God’s offer of friendship with him through Jesus his Pitcairn’s Island. It is a fascinating history … freed Son? from the tyranny of a cruel Captain these sailors return RPO to Tahiti to pick up their beautiful women partners and six Tahitian men who want to share their adventure. Nine months of searching led Fletcher Christian to their new home. What future was there for this small group? They started settling into their new home. These seemed good days. But even in these early days not every one was happy. The Tahitian men had grievances about the allocated land and the women. When one of the sailor’s women died the sailor took one of the Tahitians’ women for his own. Pitcairn’s island exploded and became a hell on earth. The Tahitian men rebelled. They killed many of the mutineers. The women then retaliated by all the Tahitian men. William McCoy perfected a still and things got even worse. Gardens neglected. The women were left to bring up the children, while the men drank themselves into a stupor. The brave Bounty sailors’ story at this stage is one of rebellion, murder, abduction and probable rape, depression, alcoholism, sexual permissiveness and abuse, suicides, violence and the exploitation of the Tahitian men. A sad legacy but then a miracle, Ned Young, suffering asthma, knows he probably does not have long to live starts teaching Adams to read and write. In their sober moments they recognised their responsibility to the children. Ned and John started a school, but Ned was not well enough to continue and has to leave the near illiterate and constantly drunk John Adams to take over as teacher. They have limited reading material, the Book of Common Prayer and the Bible. God spoke to Adams through these books. Reading them Adams learnt of the freedom he could have from the guilt he had been carrying around. Adams also received a vision of what life could be like for his small community. From that moment Adams made it his life’s work to teach the children, to invest in their future. He must have done a great job. A few years later two of his Majesty’s warships anchored at Pitcairn. By rights they should have left with Adams in chains, to be hung in England, but the two Captains decided the best thing was to leave Adams there, leading his people. The Bounty mutiny and John Adams are part of the story of present day Norfolk Island. John Adams was the leader, teacher and pastor. His dramatic turn around preceded everyone on Pitcairn finding that same salvation. Adams’ life was turned around and he found his purpose. Pitcairn was transformed from a hell on earth to an earthly paradise famous throughout the world as a community of Christian faithfulness. God gave John Adams a choice, would he continue to waste his life in drunkenness and violence or would A Page from the Past various Island residents who assisted from time to time - Jerry Aafjes and Dudley Hudson for their cheerful and The Norfolk Islander efficient work with bulldozers; Jack Howell for ready Friday, 17 November 1967 mixed concrete and whose teething troubles with that Land and Immigration on Norfolk Island - valuable service will, we hope have been overcome There was a long article in this issue and the following in the near future; Greg Quintal for reminding us of a are extracts:- (a) in 1885 Mr. Henry Wilkinson, the lost art in well sinking; Skeet Anderson and his helpers Magistrate for Lord Howe Island, arrived on the Island for their work on the old stone ruins; Jim Paton for to make certain inspections and enquiries for the his unfailing help, reliability and efficiency in our common weal, at the instigation of the Government. cartage requirements; Bill Sanders for some very good (b) In his report he noted that the following persons had steak and our transport; Val and Kit Nobbs for their settled on the Island. It is perfectly acceptable to have another person represent you in the bidding process, as long as the authority to act on your behalf is in writing and given to the Auctioneer prior to the auction. Every auction is different but they follow pre-announced conditions as to how they will be conducted. Most auctions are subject to a ‘reserve price’ set by the vendor that is confidentially given to the Auctioneer prior to the commencement of bidding. If and when bidding reaches that ‘reserve price’ the Auctioneer will announce the property as being ‘on the market’. Bidding at auctions does usually develop and continue in an orderly fashion with every opportunity afforded to those present to submit a bid, and to have their bid acknowledged. The Auctioneer can call for a minimum starting figure and can change denomination of increases at any time. You can certainly challenge this and offer lower bids. As the auction progresses, each bid is noted as to the amount and the name of the person submitting it. Bidders should have a clear idea as to their financial limit and stick to it. It can be easy to be carried away with the emotion of the moment, especially where competitive and spirited bidding is underway. It is important to clearly indicate your bid either by voice or by accepted gesture. It is important to be physically visible to the Auctioneer during the auction and submit your bids strongly and confidently. After all, you are endeavouring to convince others at the auction to stop bidding so you end up being the highest bidder. Stay calm, unemotional and be alert to what is happening and where other bids are coming from. Remember, if you are a successful bidder at auction there is no ‘cooling off period’ and you are required to immediately enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the property and pay the required deposit. Those requirements still apply if a property is ‘passed in’ (where the reserve price is not met) and where the property sells by subsequent negotiation (e.g. with the highest unsuccessful bidder), on the day of the auction.  This is Article 20 in a series offered by Dave Weekley, an experienced and licensed Agent with an extensive background in banking and real estate fields, and who is retained by Norfolk Island Real Estate as a Sales Consultant/Auctioneer.
