Bookmark not defined. 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Future Project has a simple mandate - to build empowered citizens across Africa, through (inclusive) enterprise and (active) citizenship. This focus on Human Capital Development is informed by our value proposition: Africa’s growth needs a generation of young people who are gainfully employed and able to demand better leadership. Our projects include Aiki.ng, an employability portal presented with Microsoft; the Nigeria Symposium for Young & Emerging Leaders, #StartupsAfrica, Intern4Jobs, The m-Hub, The Future Enterprise Support Scheme and The Future Africa Awards & Summit, described as ‘The Nobel Prize for Young Africans’. With a network of funders and partners including the Tony Elumelu Foundation, the US Government, First Bank, MTN, HP, the Nigerian Government and the British Council, our work has spanned Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Malawi, Cameroon, Somalia, Equitorial Guinea, Ivory Coast and Kenya. Founded by Chude Jideonwo and Adebola Williams, TFP is supervised by a Global Board of Advisors drawn from Africa, Europe, North America and the Middle East, including the Coordinating Minister of the Nigerian Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Senior Economic Advisor with the Open Society Foundations; Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, co- founder of ONE, Jamie Drummond and the Chief of Cabinet with the Africa Development Bank, Anne Kabagambe. Targeting primarily young people between the ages of 16 to 40 years, TFP is guided by a Strategic Plan from which it derives its annual and quarterly work-plan. This report therefore highlights implementation reports comprising overview of implemented activities and results achieved. 2.0 IMPLEMENTED ACTIVITIES 2.1 Thematic Areas 2.1.1 Enterprise Development and Employability The enterprise development thematic area seeks to develop where imperative and also strengthen the capacity of young people in Africa towards positive contribution to the economic and social growth. To this end, the following activities were programmed for implementation in the quarter being reported. Aiki Mentorship Monthly mentorship/career-counselling sessions were held and the primary areas of focus addressed include; Personal Development, Social Media Tools, SMEs/Startups, Career/Job growth and Creative Technology. A total of 513 participants benefitted from the sessions. Facilitators engaged for the sessions include; Opeyemi Awoyemi, co-founder, Jobberman; Ifeoma Areh, CEO, Wildflower Pr; Sola Lawal, MD Wennovation Hub; Kola Kuddus, CEO, Kuddus Kouture; Adaora Ayoade, Managing Director, EZ37 and Olufunbi Falayi, CEO, Passion Incubator . - Aiki Employability conference and Artisan Workshop, Port Harcourt The conference was held in July 2014 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State to improve the employability and entrepreneurship chances of young people in the state. The activity had over 500 participants and was facilitated by the following resource persons; Toyin Yussuf Head, Business Development, Suffix Nigeria; Eniola Bankole CEO, Bankymoore Consulting UK & Founder, Nigeria Dialogue; Tonye Cole CEO, Sahara Energy; and comedian Dan’ D Humuorous. Vocational skills taught were; soap and insecticide making, designing of Ankara bags and shoes, basics of cosmetics & application of makeup and making of pastries. For the employability aspect of the activity, participants were taught how to write a great proposal and CV writing. • #StartupAfrica launches building businesses one community at a time. A community-based enterprise programme that kicked off in April 2014 with the pilot #SurulereStartups, where young entrepreneurs are engaged, mentored and supported to create a network of value-adding activities. This pilot will ultimately be presented, after a 30-month period, as a case study for building enterprising youth and creating jobs community-by-community across the continent. We aim to help start ups with training, access to funding and other ancillary services with a mandate to ensure they survive and grow. - Aiki Nigeria represented at DEMO Africa Demo Africa an activity for young persons engaged in ICT was held in Lagos by the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology in partnership with Lions Africa. The activity provides a platform for sharing of innovations with the aim of attracting investors to invest in their start-ups. TFP participated and live tweeted to followers to afford them the opportunity of utilizing relevant information for their career advancement. - Launch of #Surulerestartup applications - September 2014 The activity aimed at assisting small businesses in the Surulere environs strengthens the business owners with skills to manage their businesses successfully. The activity which is the second stream commenced in September. The activity which comprises shortlisting of successfully candidates, capacity building to include mentorship, incubation and seed granting will be rounded by January 2015 for this stream. TFP commissions survey on internship culture in Nigeria The survey, initiated as a result of a partnership between Microsoft Nigeria and TFP’s seeks to provide Microsoft and TFP with data on extent to which the concept of internship is understood, appreciated and applied in Nigeria by employers of labour in the public and private sector. Under TFP Commission, a rapid intercept was conducted with the following preliminary findings; that companies especially small business have the capacity (In terms of funds) to delegate a trainer to train and mentor the intern. The results also show that most interns don’t have the required skills and there are limited funding so it's more cost effective to hire someone with even a little prior experience. The Future Entrepreneur Development Program Quarterly entrepreneurship trainings that focused on those who were interested in starting up their own businesses or improving existing businesses structure. TF-EDP uses the Build Your Business curriculum as a guide. Twenty (28) participants benefitted from the program. 2.1.2 Governance and Leadership The goal of TFP’s governance and leadership thematic area is that young people are adequately informed and are equipped with decision making skills. In facilitating achievement of the goal, the organization recognizes the importance of identifying with and celebrating young people already demonstrating remarkable leadership skills in their chosen field and also achieving results. The thematic area also focuses on facilitating young people’s active, response and informed participation in governance in the country. Below are activities implemented during the period under consideration; The Future Awards Africa nominees reception 2014 - Nominee’s Reception Following the relationship established with the United States Embassy in Lagos, the embassy’s Consul General, Jeffery Hawkins hosted the TFAA 2014 nominees in July to a reception. The activity heighted the Embassy’s support to Young Africans in their given fields and also provides a platform for international partnership. Guest at the event included, nominees, members of the diplomatic corps, media houses, entertainment and corporate sector, development sector and others. Nominees were presented with their nomination certificates. The event was anchored by South African TV host, Vimbai Mutinhiri. A total of 198 guest attended. The Future Awards Africa Advisory Council Event This event was held in partnership with Life house, the Advisory Council of The Future Project were hosted to a reception in which members were inducted into Advisory Council. - Meet the class of 2014 Ad roll out To inspire other young Africans and facilitate adequate knowledge of the public on achievements of each nominee, profiles of the 50 nominees of The Future Awards Africa 2014 promoted online. The profiles were promoted on traditional and social media. The link for the promo banners were embedded in Ten (10) TFP’s media partners websites so that once clicked it takes a surfer to the site. Three (3) television stations – Channels Television, African Magic and Ebony Life TV supported the activity by running it during their programs. - The Future Awards Africa 2014 Nominees Media tour The media tour was organized further promote TFAA nominees and their work to the public using both traditional and social media. Radio interviews, TV Interviews and Twitter live chats. Twenty (20) nominees have participated in the tour. - The Future Project Monthly Volunteers Meeting The meeting designed as another capacity building opportunity was held in August and September 2014. For the month, August Twenty three (23) volunteers participated.
