This is our 27th year at the Hibbard Road location; it’s unbelievable how time flies by when you’re having fun! I am VERY proud to be part of the success of our fair. It gives our youth a great place to have fun and learn, all at the same time. It’s also a terrific place for the adults in the county to meet and greet- and renew long-time friendships. There’s so much to see and do! Come out and be part of one of the county’s best events throughout the year – right here at the Shiawassee County Fair!

Friends, Family, Fun – that’s what it’s all about.

Have a great Fair,

Ric Crawford, Fair Manager

The Surrey Rides The Surrey Rides have been a beloved feature of the Shiawassee County Fair for all of the years at the Hibbard Road Fairgrounds. Roger Reed and Jack Crambell started the tradition in 1988; thanks to the dedication of our Draft Horse drivers and enthusiasts, the tradition continues. Ron Stites, Superintendant of the Draft Horses, has worked tirelessly to increase their participation and to showcase these magnificent animals. Thanks, Surrey Drivers, for all that you do! Take advantage of the FREE SURREY RIDES everyday! Horse drawn wagons will transport visitors around the Fairgrounds free of charge every day during Fair Week. Board the wagons at the front parking lot B or various places along the surrey route.

Did You Know? An early was developed in the mid-19th century; fanciful animals were fixed to a circular floor that would suspend from a center pole and rotate. These were operated manually by the operators or ponies.

Message to Voters: I have spent my legal career in the private practice of law representing ordinary people who have encountered a situation in life that requires legal help to resolve. It may be a divorce, a child custody issue, a criminal matter, a boundary line dispute or other real estate problem, a suit between business partners, medical malpractice, personal injury, or many things that can affect us as we go about our lives. I have represented my clients from the standpoint of an emphatic counselor, a legal coach, a problem solver, and a mediator. Serving individuals and families is what has prepared me to fi ll the Circuit Court Judgeship. I am fair, open-minded, committed to a safe community, and a Navy Veteran. I promise I will make a difference! - Matt Stewart

I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR VOTE ON AUGUST 5TH, 2014 Local Attorney Statements: I know of no attorney practicing in this county who can match Matt Stewart’s work ethic. In addition, we need a judge who has signifi cant private practice experience, because a court which doesn’t understand the expense involved for a litigant or private attorney attending court, is out of touch with the realities of our judicial system. Matt Stewart is the only candidate with signifi cant private practice experience. He is the only candidate whose paycheck depends on his own initative. - William C. Brown, Attorney at Law The best candidate for Circuit Court Judge is Matt Stewart. He has the broadest legal knowledge and deepest legal experience of all candidates seeking the offi ce. He is the most accessible can- didate, and demonstrates the necessary temperament, sound judgment, fundamental fairness and common sense for the job. - Rebecca C. variety of locations during the spring and summer. The club members have the opportunity to learn about safety, their equipment and can develop their skills in an environment that is focused on positive youth development through shooting sports. Seven members of the club attended the Clare County 4-H Archery Tourna- ment and participated in target and 3D individual and team events. They had a great time enjoying the course and participating in the shoot. The club has several members who will participate in the State 4-H Shooting Sport Tournament on August 9 in Port Huron. Last year, three members from the club participated in the State 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament and they each captured a place in the top 20 in their age bracket. As the club looks forward to the new program year they hope to expand their meetings to offer rifle and shotgun to the members who are interested. The members have the opportunity to participate in as many disciplines as they chose so families can decide which of these fit their budget and their schedules. This year’s Shiawassee County 4-H Camp was held at beautiful Camp Neyati located on Crooked Lake in Lake Station from June 28-30. Counselors, ages 13-19, selected a Zoofari theme for this year and designed a program full of activities for campers, ages 7-12, to enjoy during this two night, three day experience. Barry Link and Jennifer Weichel served as Co-Directors for the camp and provided training to the Teen Counsel- ors from February to June. Thirty-two teen counselors attended training which included three evening meetings, two full day trainings, on-site training and an overnight at Potter Park Zoo where they did research on habitats, eco-systems and animals. Through the Camp Counselor experience they learned leadership skills, communica- tions skills, youth development basics, teamwork, responsibility and so much more. This year, the club has a total of 38 members, from the Byron, Bancroft and Durand areas. Members will be exhibiting steers, pigs, turkeys, chickens, rabbits and lambs, along with artwork, photography, metal work, vegetables and many other diverse projects in the exhibit building. Throughout the year, members feed, water, exercise and groom their animals daily. Raising animals is an incredible time commitment for 4-H members. They learn responsibility, money management and the impor- tance of a good work ethic. For many club members, the money they raise from auctioning off their animals is deposited into their college savings accounts. The Antrim-Burns 4-H Club would like to say “thank you” to our clubs four senior members, James Bower, Dan- iel Miles, Emily Ritter and James Whaley. They are special, young adults who will be greatly missed by the club. They have been excellent examples of positive values, work ethic and leadership. These four members exemplify everything for which 4-H stands. The Antrim-Burns 4-H Club is led by parent volunteers who are assigned to each animal barn. Diane Bower is responsible for the beef barn, Denise Markley the swine barn, Glenna Tillman the poultry barn, Julie Chrisinske the rabbit barn, and a new addition this year, Amy Lawrence will be in charge of the sheep barn. FAIR Memories. (Independent File Photos) 4-H Council Presents 4-H Awards The Shiawassee County 4-H Council held its annual awards brunch on February 2 at the Memorial Healthcare Auditorium. 168 people attended. 77 project medals were given out. To qualify for a project medal, the 4-H mem- ber must have at least three years in a project area. Rabbits, Horses, Food & Nutrition and Photography were some of the medal categories. The highest award in a county is the Key Club Award. To receive the Key Club Award, an individual must show that they have worked exceptionally well in their project areas and have demonstrated leadership, and have tak- en their abilities outside of our county to the state level. Key Club Award winners were cousins Alex Stechschulte and Aubrey Stechschulte. Both have shown in the horse and pony category, as well as art and photography. Each has attended several leadership conferences at Kettunen Center in Tustin, Michigan, and have shown their projects at the state level. Alex has also received a state ribbon for his photography. The I Dare You Award is given to individuals in high school who have shown leadership abilities inside and outside of 4-H (FFA, Student Council, etc). The I Dare You winners this year were Matthew Swett and Samantha Hahn. The Citizen Washington Focus (CWF) awards were given to Dane Sebasta and Alex Stechschulte. CWF is a learning lab about our national government held in Washington D.C. Sebasta and Stechschulte represented the 4-H youth of Shiawassee County in late June of this year. To learn more about how to get involved in 4-H in Shiawassee County, contact the Shiawassee County Exten- sion office at (989) 743-2251.
