Hi Everyone, How do you like our new look Rural Roundup? We have added more colour pages which will brighten up the publication. Kingsdown Hall must be congratulated on achieving a Standard 3 Quality Hallmark. Well done! Apparently only eight halls in the region have achieved this, The hall will be closed during the Easter holiday for another major piece of refurbishment, thanks to a grant of £2,500 from Steve Manion’s KCC fund. This time the floor is having a face lift. We are slowly getting there. Residents of Kingsdown & Ringwould are being invited by the Parish Council to get involved in ‘Front Gardens in Bloom’, a new project to pretty up the two villages. See details on page 15. Surprise Visitor
There was a surprise visitor to Tea and Chat in March, when Deal Town Mayor, Marlene Burnham, dropped in with friends Philip and Barbara Kilby just for the tea and chat (and possibly the cake!). Not wishing to waste an extra pair of hands, we got her to do the 100 club draw using our sophisticated selection machine ‘King Edward’ (Oh all right, it’s a potato bag, but if Lotto can have Sir Lancelot………………….)
Tea and Chat meets this month on Thursday 3rd April at 2pm in the church social space, when we will be joined by Amanda Martin from Dover DC who will talk and give advice about schemes to save money on fuel bills. All are welcome. Homemade cakes and a cuppa, not to mention a good chat! £1, why not come along?

6 Dear Friends As I write this letter we are in the middle of Lent - a time that calls us to stop, to take stock and to reflect on the health or otherwise of our faith. Lent recalls the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, and invites us to consider our own response to temptation in turn. It reminds us of Jesus’ steadfast commitment to the way of the cross, and asks if we are willing to bear the cost of discipleship. It speaks of the prayer and devotion that sustained Jesus during those forty days and nights of testing, and from there urges us to make time and space for God a priority in our own lives. As we move towards Easter, there are a number of very special Holy days when Christians remember Christ’s journey to the cross. On Sunday 13th April we celebrate Palm Sunday – the day that Christ rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. Many were expecting a warrior, a War Lord who would arrive on a mighty war horse ready to lead them into battle and to save them from their oppressors – but Christ chose another way – a way of peace and humility that led to the cross. On Thursday 17th April we remember Maundy Thursday – the day on which Jesus shared the Last Supper with his disciples in an upper room, and it was from here that one of his disciples, Judas, left the company to go and be- tray Jesus for 30 silver coins. Good Friday is on 18th April – the day when Christ was led to Calvary to be exe- cuted and where he took all our sins on himself so that we might receive salva- tion. “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” (Matt 27: 22) “From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? – which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”…. And when Je- sus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. (Matt 27: 45 – 50). Easter Day – Sunday 20th April – the day we celebrate the Resurrection of our risen Lord. Alleluya! I wish everyone a very blessed Eastertide and invite you to come and join us at one of our services during Easter week for a time of prayer, thanksgiving and reflection. As usual we will be having Easter Egg hunts at Ringwould and Kingsdown – a great time for everyone - following our Easter Day celebration services and I look forward to seeing you there. ST JOHN’S HERITAGE ASSOCIATION The FIRST Annual General Meeting of the Association will take place on Thursday 24th April at 7.30 pm in St John’s Church. This meeting is open to all members of the Association and anyone else in the village who is interested in the maintenance and preservation of our beautiful village church. Auction of Quality Items held by St John’s Heritage Association The Auction in February realised £91 net for the Fabric Fund. It was a fun evening but poorly supported, which was disappointing, as there were many items that were unsold; the 22 items sold made £238. We thank all those who turned out on such a wet night for their support and particularly thank our auctioneer, Martin Hume-Cook, who extracted the maximum from those present.
Operatic Concert This is an advance notice of a live Operatic Concert to be held in the Church on Saturday May 10th at 7.00pm. Please put a note in your diaries and give us your support. Various topics were discussed at the meeting: A date for the next Kingsdown beach clean has been set for 26th April 2014, and the Parish Council are pleased to be involved. A local resident attended the meeting and gave a presentation about how a new website could benefit the Parish Council. The presentation was informative and gave Councillors a lot to think about and discuss. Councillors have agreed a budget to begin work to improve the area around the Kingsdown public toilets. Cllr Bucknell will be liaising with Dover District Council on the project and the Parish Council hope the residents and visitors to the area will appreciate the benefit of this project once completed. The Parish Council are delighted to announce the start of the Garden in Bloom Competition! Please see below for more details! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the village/local community who has supported the Juniors in their business project. The project has enabled the children to develop leadership skills, economic understanding and negotiation skills. I even had a couple of children cleaning my office to offset the cost of hiring the hall. The most recent event held was the Eagles quiz and I was an extremely proud Head Teacher watching the children deliver the questions they had researched to a packed hall. Over £600 profit was made and the children will be deciding how they will be spending this. Mr Ramsden will be leaving us at the end of this term to continue to develop his cycle coaching business. We will miss his dedication, enthusiasm and passion for teaching – but wish him all the best for the future. Jo Hygate
Kingsdown’s Annual Easter Egg Trail Following the huge success of last year’s Easter Egg Trail, when 200 children took part, Kingsdown Pre School are back again! This time we’re very excited to announce we will be hosting the event from a new venue, Kingsdown and Ringwould Primary School on Saturday 19th April between 1pm and 3pm. There will be the ever popular trail around the woods, discovering the clues to win an Easter egg prize. Plus the return of the separate hunt for older children….are you up for the challenge? Keep your eyes peeled for the real Easter Bunny hiding in the woods too! Get your face painted at the hall before you set off and then there will be Easter art and craft activities in the hall on your return. Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting. 1. The Council has a vacancy for a Parish Councillor and several parishioners have shown an interest in this position. It is hoped that we will be welcoming a new Councillor to the meetings soon. 2. There was a good deal of discussion on the flooding of the bungalows in Homestead Lane, East Studdal. The bungalows were flooded with water throughout and are now uninhabitable for a year following a drying out period. The flood water was the result of excess rain water accumulating from roads and fields and water coursing across an adjacent field into the properties. KCC Highways have assessed the situation of blocked drains and soakaways which had a large part to play in this predicament and promise that they will improve/repair the drainage system. KCC Highways are to visit the problem areas again so that a more detailed plan can be made. The Parish Council was concerned and considered ways that they could help the owners of the bungalows which included a ‘disaster plan’ for emergency help. 3. Mr Ron Little and other council members, met a representative from ‘Wildlife Conservation’, to assess the allotments in Ashley to see if a wild flower area could be made around the fruit trees. Some new trees will also be installed. This would encourage wild birds and insects, and the bees which reside there to pollinate. The representative will give the Council a written feedback on her assessment. 4. Some new football nets are to be bought for the football posts in the Playing Field in Downs Road, Studdal Veronica Harrop - Parish Clerk

WI Meeting March Our speaker Shelagh Muggeridge kept us amused and interested with her stories of her very happy years in Perth, Western Australia. Whilst there, she worked as a part-time nurse at a clinic and was also able to spend time with two of her daughters and their families who live in Perth. At our meeting, we were happy to welcome another new member and also a visitor. Our branch has now started a Rummikub group which meets every Tuesday as well as our Canasta group who meet on a Friday. Our walking group on a Thursday morning are looking forward to the nicer weather when we can make trips to walk further afield. In April we have our Spring lunch for members where the Committee provide the meal and members make their usual delicious desserts. Lisa Souter

The sun has got his hat on, hip hip hurray! Well! It has today but for how long is anyone's guess. I am making the most of the warmth on my back as I tackle the weeds that are also taking advantage of this glorious weather. But on a negative note, let's hope that we don't get any severe frost to damage all the young growth bursting out on the shrubs and the plants that are just poking their heads over the parapet. How they are managing to do that I do not know as the ground has been so compacted by all the rain we had. There are places in the garden where the ground is just like rock and is proving quite a challenge for my fork and my back. An update on the bulbs I was given at Christmas – all the daffo- dils are standing up proudly, the tulips are putting in an appearance, the hya- cinths are full of scent and the crocus have been magnificent. But the daffo- dils I took to USA called Winston Churchill were confiscated at customs and thrown in a bin. Just let’s say I was not very happy. On Monday 28th April, the speaker will be Martin Newcombe who is coming to talk to us about 'Bats'. The Society has an outing on Sunday 1st June to Borde Hill at a cost of £35pp which includes a tour of the house and a cream tea. If anyone is interested please contact me. 26 The Kindness of Strangers Last month Cathy wrote movingly about the kindness she received from local people in Sri Lanka. This reminded me of a wonderful experience that I had some years ago when visiting Shiraz, Iran. We were fortunate to have permission to visit the famous tomb of the King of the Lamp that houses the remains of Sayyed Mir Ahmad who died in 835. A mausoleum was first erected over the grave in the mid-14th century and it has been an important Shi’ite place of pilgrimage ever since. As this is such a venerated site we had to wear a chador over our long coats and scarves. It is very difficult to carry this off successfully as it is like being wrapped up in a gigantic bed sheet and creates problems when holding the cloth and at the same time trying to remove one’s shoes at the segregated entrance to the tomb. Coming inside from the warm dusky evening, we were astounded by the bril- liance of the multi-coloured reflections from the vast numbers of minute mirror tiles which dazzled in the light of the chandeliers. In serene contrast a group of women, clad all in black, were sitting on the floor; some reading their Korans, a couple of young mothers were suckling their babies, another praying and twisting ribbons through the grilles of the tomb, others quietly talking together. With smiles greeting our arrival we were invited to sit with them. Our hands were patted and stroked, names were exchanged, the drape of the chador improved and the babies admired. Even the most ardent feminists among us were moved by the inner peace and gentleness of this all female gathering. When it was time for us to leave, our new friends saw us on our way with many blessings. This is a memory that I shall always hold dear and when mullahs and politicians are particularly strident remember the lovely ladies of Shiraz. Mary Lord
‘Tulipomania’ - Tulips are the fireworks of Spring. They erupt in a riot of colour, which begins around the middle of April and they just go on and on erupting until June, opening and closing around their kaleidoscopic, secret parts. They are show-stoppers and even those who are generally turned stone-cold frigid by gardening cannot help but be captivated by their astonishing display and want to possess them in some way. Possession literally was the buzzword too, for a brief and crazy time in 17th Century Holland, where the desire for the more unusual, multi-coloured varieties was exploited by City Traders of the day. Impossible to believe but the cost of these bulbs soared in value to the price of a house, due to demand outstripping supply. This was because of a shortage of healthy bulbs available, due to a virus, which rendered the bulbs incapable of reproducing normally. Instead, the virus caused the flower petals to ‘break’ into fabulously colourful streaks and distortions. (It would take until 1928 to identify the virus responsible). When the market crashed around 1639, leaving many in financial ruin, prices still meant that only the wealthiest people could afford to grow them. These rare varieties continued to remain the most prized of all for a long time, not just in Holland but in France and across Europe until well into the 18th Century. Much breeding and crossbreeding has gone on since the days of ‘Tulipomania’ resulting in a wide classification. There are over 2,000 named varieties to choose from now, across 15 classifications. Originating as they do on the hot, rocky mountain slopes of Southeastern Europe and the Near East, it is easy to see why tulips thrive on our chalky soils, when planted in the sun. 28 Studdal Messy Church As we advertised our Messy Church services in the Roundup in the early days, we thought it would be appropriate to give an update on the progress of our happy congregation. We have been meeting together each fourth Sunday since Octo- ber 2012 and, after a tentative start, have grown in numbers and in friendship. We ex- plore a different Christian theme each month using four or five activities; these are varied to engage all age groups and interests. Some of “the regulars” try to be involved in all activities while others pick what they would really like to do and spend more time in chat- ting with friends new and old. There is a short time of worship, usually incorporating songs, storytelling and prayer time that is relevant to those in attendance. Then we have time for further sharing and getting to know each other over a nutritious and delicious meal. There are individuals, young and old, who come to join in the fun, as well as different sized family groups attending; all having the freedom to enjoy each other’s company as the “team” have provided all that is needed for the evening. We have one family who cover three generations! It really is an all age service, providing something pleasant for people from varying backgrounds, experiences and points of view. First World War memorabilia, vintage French kitchenalia and locally made herbal soaps are just some of the items that will be on sale at the Walmer Brocante on Bank Holiday Monday, 5th May.
